How Green was my London Fog Purse....

Some may recall my interest in the Brompton purse from J Crew earlier this summer in the rainforest green:

Brompton mini-hobo

It was to be the faithful companion to the ill-fated Valentina pumps in dusty jade which truly hurt my feet and which went back to whence they came.

But still, I kind of hankered after that purse.  It was $298 CDN and I contemplated getting it on the 25% off sale this week, but just couldn't bite.  I didn't really need it and while I am doing wretched at not shopping, I was trying to show a modicum of restraint...

I was sort of feeling like young Roddy McDowell in one of my favourite films, How Green was My Valley....

If you have not seen this film, you are in for a treat (Tabitha has me thinking of treats now!).  It will break your heart and uplift it all at the same time!  And yes, the green shoe/green bag longing was making me sad and a little pathetic...

But as is the case in all Hollywood stories such as mine, there is always another day....

Yesterday, I popped into Winners (the equivalent of TJ Maxx) and perused the purses.  And there, was the most dainty little London Fog satchel, just waiting for me to take it home, at the bargain basement price of $80!

Oh she is lovely.

Grey plaid silky interior lining,

Sturdy handle:

Just a genuinely lovely little purse that did not cost me an arm and a leg.

It has been a soppy weekend here.  My outfit has been appropos for the weather:

J Crew Naomi top in leopard, pink tartan black and cream cardigan from last year, cynthia steffe ponte knit trousers and my find of the fall - Mr. Seymour short black boots on sale from $430 for $100.  They are very comfortable.  I do not see them online, but they look quite a bit like this, except in black:

Church's Monmouth glossed-leather Chelsea boots

Very comfy indeed!

So green purse in hand, I shall sally forth on those days when one needs a green purse, which honestly, is just about every day...

Yes, I think Roddy would be happy!

  1. You have got high kicking dancer's legs! They are utterly amazing, you should show them off more often, mine are squat next to yours.

  2. Oh you are too funny! I wonder if high kicking dancers have such knobby knees?

  3. I understand, I still stalk the green Marceau purse from last year. It is sold out but I see it around now and then. The London Fog bag looks very nice, and I think I like the shape of it better than the Brompton. My outfit from yesterday involved a J. Crew long-sleeved waffle crew-neck shirt and now I am obsessed with wanting J. Crew to bring them back again this year, I need another. They are so warm.

    1. That is so funny! I was looking at the 2007 holiday catalogue with the really nice waffle tees and was thinking the same thing!

    2. I wasn't into J. Crew in 2007 so I missed those, but I sure hope they bring them back this year. Do they offer them every winter?

    3. cate, I have the green Marceau, and honestly, I love the green, but am otherwise constantly annoyed with the Marceau. It has the magic quality of tucking the very thing I'm going to need in a hurry under everything else, no matter how I try to organize the contents. I am not meant for unstructured interiors. And having the zip on the bottom of the front outside flap is a disaster, because everything I put there, generally key cards and bus pass, slides right to the bottom and either falls out or gets stuck on the zipper.

    4. wellfedfred, I have the Marceau in the saddle color! I haven't had those problems with it yet. I really like it but my main complaint is that there is no outside compartment for my phone. It has to go inside, where there actually is a nice pocket, but then I can never hear it ringing. This purse is sound-proof (the Copywriter From Space forgot to talk up this feature). Still I'll bet that green one is really pretty, sacrifice for fashion!

  4. I was just thinking yesterday I wanted a green bag! I did look at the Brompton again but only for a moment, I'm so cranky with J Crew these days I can't stay on the site for more than 3 seconds.
I'm with Cate, I like the shape of your green bag better anyway. Well done and good deal! Your weekend outfit is perfect and I've never viewed that film, I'm putting it on my list, thanks for that!

  5. What a truly fabulous find, WMM! I love the size, color, and silhouette, not to mention that it is a much more reasonable price than the Brompton.

Love your outfit, and wish it was cooled down here enough to dress in a similar way. Instead, I was in a maxi dress and sandals. I am really looking forward to some colder temps so that I can break out my blazers and boots!

    1. Well... I wouldn't mind still being in my sandals! It is well and truly fall here now - no more sandals for us!

  6. WMM, I have found most of my great purses at TJ Maxx. It can be a goldmine. I love your London Fog! I always lust after J.Crew purses, too, but then I think... if I saw that at TJ Maxx and it was another brand, would I even consider paying $300? The answer is always no :)

    1. That is too funny! I think that TJ Maxx/Winners can be such fun and you never know what you will get when you arrive! I only have one really expensive purse; i am such a klutz that I am always nervous that I will ruin nicer leather!

  7. Oh WMM, I could go on about being green with envy, the greenbacks you saved at Winners, our jaded JC collective etc. bags being a bit (okay a lot) of a thing with me. But that's partly because I long OD'd on your movie inspiration. Sometimes sentimental nan and originally Welsh DH now make me grin and bear it over anything Wales, even Dylan Thomas and Prince William. Although I still recommend Caerphilly cheese (like a crumbly cheddar) and Corgi socks. Happy Monday, those boots were another best bargain.

  8. Too funny! I forgot to mention that the Minister in that movie is ably played by one Walter Pidgeon, favourite son of New Brunswick, whose square jaw and steely, yet kindly, resolve, helped the movies make it through the second world war! I may subject you all to random old movie lists that I feel everyone should see, but then, I am wont to talk to the screen at moments of great stress (I am known famously by my family for crying out, whilst cooking supper and watching Turner Classic Movies, "For God's Sakes Lassie, don't go THAT way!!!!!!")

The Welsh are a romantic people, at least in my mind. Wonder what Tabs would say to that!

    1. Good to know I am not the only one that issues urgent instructions to TCM at pivotal moments. Never has helped, but I keep hoping. WMM when you get a chance to go, Wales, particularly Cardiff, will remind you of NB in one big way, all the road signs, official buildings etc. are bilingual. And the countryside is truly lovely, those green valleys with clouds of sheep, craggy bays, slate for street paving, plus a castle about every kilometer.

    2. Whoops, meant to say, IMO, Wales is the Maine of Britain or maybe a bit our NFLD. Full of character and wry humour, doesn't suffer fools gladly, takes time and a spirit of adventure to get to know.

    3. Oh - that may be one of the next trips. I need to go to Scotland next I think. I can't help but feel they are waiting for me, but I could be wrong!

GetFresh - I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.." points to all those who get that!

    4. Oh GetFresh and WMM, I absolutely love Wales! I am part Welsh (on my father's side), and was able to visit when I was 19 (I traveled there with one of my best girlfriends). Like GetFresh said, the country is absolutely beautiful with all the green valleys, sheep, etc. I just absolutely loved it!

At the time, my father was a fire fighter and we lived in a town here in Florida called Conway. Well, there is also a Conwy in Wales (formerly known as Conway in English), so I took a picture of the Fire Station there, and he loved it.

As for Cardiff, that is also where the spacetime rift on both Doctor Who and Torchwood is located. Any other Doctor Who fans here possibly? :)

I would love to go back to visit some day. My hubby and I are planning a trip to Europe next spring, but we'll more than likely be visiting France (I want to go to Paris) and Germany (he is half German) that time. Hopefully we'll get to go over again soon after that, and perhaps make Great Britain our destination then.
