Sunday in Soggy Land

Well it is the last day of June and when I think of June 2013, I think of rain...

We have broken records for rain this month.  I think we have had exactly 5 days of sunshine.

This makes me sad.  I adore summer.  I adore my garden.  I don't mind the odd rainy day.  But here's the thing: I haven't really been doing any gardening at all in 10 days.  It has been too wet and the mosquitoes and black flies would make you weep.  I have officially become old moss-back Wendy and it can be only a matter of time before I start sprouting leaves and become an Ent....

Butch was as high as the roof, but has been beaten down from all the rain...

But there is still lots of beauty, if you can run outside quickly before the mosquitoes carry you off to their evil Mosquito King...

The honeysuckle is in bloom....

So is my clematis, though worse for wear...

Someone forgot to tell this peony not too look so damn cheerful...

The creeping thyme is doing just that.  Sh!  We won't tell it that a bunch of its flowers are going to be in my salad tonight...

A lot of weeding is needed...

But the Sweet William is keeping the morale of the troops up.

This chair was supposed to be repainted this month, but am thinking this is just a lovely shot of faded glory, the first peony that bloomed in my garden giving its all before its moment in the sun is done.

And the weigela is waiting for someone to pop by and take a look....

And my foxglove is a lonely sentinel in the rain...

If you like moss however, you are in luck: it is doing awfully well.

I am feeling much better having gone out and actually talked with them all.  They have missed me.  Why, the mosquitoes kindly walked me around the garden, keeping me good company while I snapped this pictures this morning!  It was quite heart-warming.

I was wearing my bright red bathrobe.  You can do that when you live in the middle of the country and are surrounded by forest!  I do think I should consider some new fancy PJS after reading Tiffany Roses's blog this morning....

But the thing is, I want it to get sunny.  I want to be out there.  I want to be hot.  I don't want to look at the fireflies through the pouring rain.  I know it will happen, but wish it would happen SOON!  And I know I shouldn't complain, what with the terrible times our friends have been having in Alberta.  So I will now suck it up, and appreciate your listening to my whining!

How has the weather been your way?  Any big plans on this lovely Sunday?

I think I am going to cook - I have a lot of rhubarb and I may make rhubarb jam...

Have a wonderful day and stay safe out there!

  1. Wendy,it the same here too, lots of rain and cold for most of may and june.
It is supposed to be sunny and warm next week, but i have to feel the warmth to believe it.

Even though i will move to a warm climate soon,i start to miss my life here. Despite the climate and some other disadvantages, life has been good her.
My kids and i enjoyed saying "goodbye to down jackets and snowboots" and giving them away.
This week has been horrible(as you read on my blog) and like you said whining is not so bad as long as the kids are alive and well!

    Enjoy your sunday!

  2. Your garden is looking lush... must be all the rain! ;) We've had lots of rain but lots of sunny days as well, it's been a much better spring here than years past when we've had restricted-water conditions by this time of the summer, then I know I have to eek out enough water to keep my garden alive, and I can't stand to hand-water my garden. On restricted water we have to let our lawns just die too, not allowed watering them at all. So I'll take the buckets of rain!
Our water supply is unusual where I live because it comes from a natural spring (that is actually used for bottled water, if you ever buy Nestle bottled water- well that's our tap water). So it doesn't take many dry days for the levels to lower drastically.
I'll be in my garden today to tackle the weeds, my Fairy roses are blooming and I'm going to try for some pictures of them, they are a little bedraggled from Friday's downpour but still pretty!
Oh and I see 20 people I know the second I step out my door, there are always people around, living in the country would be so freeing, I'd have my coffee in my pyjamas outside!
Good luck with the rhubarb jam!

    1. Thanks dani - I try to only ever water the veggies and the flowers in pots - I think I have only watered 3 times this year! I finally got a rain barrel - it has overflowed several times!!!

    2. Realy Dani? That's why you put so much effort into looking good everyday! I don't see anyone I know ever unless I drive to mum's.

    4. It's true our neighbourhood is full of people I know walking by, it's the downtown neighbourhood and we live on the street which leads to all the shops, banks, the library, the bus and trains, everyone walks by here. Never fails if I step out in my sweatpants someone sees me!
Wendy I have to show you my Bedhead robe, it has hummingbirds on it, you need one!

    6. Oh Dani, I'd have to up my game if I lived where you live, that's like living a celebrity lifestyle! You are getting papped when you step out the front door.

Bedhead have a lovely things, I've just been trying to mend my eye mask - I can't sew so it now looks like something a crazed serial killer would wear.

    8. I can't go anywhere without seeing someone I know either. It's nice in a lot of ways, I guess I can travel if I want some anonymity!

    9. Husby and I had coffee out our patio this morning and I was in the complete PJs of the same top shown in my post. I may have been in view of some neighbors but thank goodness they cannot get a good look unless using binoculars. Even if they could, not much will be gained, NOT that anyone would! Yicks, shuddup already TR.

  4. You have such a pretty garden, it's so romantic.
No summer here, no summer here ever really it's more of an intellectual decision in Scotland to wear lighter clothes and freeze from May till end of August. All the fires were lit round here last night, I closed the gates last night to the smell of wood and peat.

    1. I like that - an intellectual decision! You are hardy folk! You should have immigrated with we nuts to the land of bugs and humidity!

  5. I'm with Dani- people around everywhere, so I can't wander around in a robe. Ironically, I just mentioned to my son the other day that I have not had to water my lawn once all season. In fact I completely forgot about it, because we have had so much evening rain. We have been blessed with some sunny days, and I have been taking advantage of them . I am still amazed at your lovely garden.

    1. in the perfect world, it would rain for 2 hours every evening from 2 to 4 am! Alas, this is not that! It would be even Lovelier if the sun could visit it!

  6. Well we live out that my hubs thinks the front lawn is his urinal. Drives me nuts. Although it is nice to garden, strip, and jump in the pool without fear of being seen. Saw World War Z. I liked it but it lost the "feel" of the book. Em says they are thinking about making it into a trilogy. What always stuck out to me in the book was what happened to the whales...remember? Saw a trailer for "The Conjuring" and scared the bejesus out of me...it's creepy, will not see that one. Have a fantastic day. Much love.

    1. BB - I thought the same thing - if they were going to do a trilogy, they could easily have adapted the book! The whales broke my heart... all of the animals.. sigh..

    2. I think all the rabbits in the neighborhood think of our lawn as their urinal. They are killing our grass, don't they realize when it's all dead, there goes their breakfasts and dinners?

  7. It has been the worst year in memory and second or third worst in fifty years or so. Diabolical. Today is nice having said that but back to rain tomorrow. It was 24 today but we were all boiling bc one long winter and we have morphed already! But your garden is looking great anyway!!

  9. Butch does look a little soggy, poor Butch! Surely there is someone who needs this rain and we could send it there?

  10. If you want sunny and hot, come visit me. That's why I got the fancy jammies, they are wonderfully cool and fairly presentable. Your yard is like my dad's, he gets a ton of rain so his garden is jungle lush but oh the mosquitoes, they are big, numerous and hungry. I recall feeling as if after a feeding frenzy by piranhas.

Did you see what I got out of my garden that would give Butch a run?

  11. Well WMM, I don't live on a lovely street like Dani's, but can entertain an entire Blue Jays crowd or opposite office full of insurance accountants, so I mind my robe/ PJs (inside only) and try to remember to brush my hair early. Two weeks ago, I ran to SDM a block north of us to get Benadryl for Mike (bites) and spotted Sarah P. Not that she is a picky dresser, but that jolted me out of my cleaning cargo capris, tank and flips in public for rest of summer.
