Miller Time Friday: An easy, over-sized tent shape - those peasants!

Oh J Crew - you do turn a head with your descriptors!

As you know, I decided in my wisdom to try and find a top that would help me replicate the look Julie Delpy sported in Before Sunset:

The J Crew eyelet peasant top seemed like it could fit the bill, catapulting me into the realm of Parisian femme fatal, boho chic extraordinaire, etc, etc (cue Yul Brynner to read last line, someone!) but the descriptor easy, over-sized tent shape, scared the bejesus out of me.

See here is the thing:  I can easily replicate easy, over-sized tent shape myself without the help of a blouse, thank you very much....

That scamp Ema tried it on, and it looked awfully cute on her here.  But let's call a spade a spade, Ema and I are, ahem, not exactly shaped alike.  So it was with some trepidation that i opened the box yesterday and put my little pup tent on...

Oh just look at me in all my cute Julie Delpy-like splendour.  It does pouf, but not in an awful way:

It has satisfied my urge for the chic peasant top for now, though Ema, is right; it is definitely a summer black, not a dark winter black:

with black cotton cardigan - it really does look almost navy..
Ethan - where are YOU...........

In honour of my success, we really should have a lovely little cocktail.  How about

Caiprinha The Little Peasant Girl

Ingredients

1 3/4 oz. Cachaca Fazenda Mae de Ouro
1/2 Lime Tahiti
2 tbsp. Sugar Superfine Cane (more Sugar drinks)

Instructions

Cut off the ends of the lime and cut it into eight even wedges. Be sure to remove the white core. Sprinkle the sugar over 4 lime slices in the bottom of an old-fashioned glass. With a wood pestle; press only the core of the fruit, without pressing the rind. This prevents the drink from becoming sour. Fill the glass with crushed ice and add Cachaça Fazenda Mãe de Ouro. Shake or stir well. Serve in a glass decorated with a slice of lime.

Oh Lord!!! Am I the only one who has no clue what the heck Cachaça Fazenda Mãe de Ouro is?

here it is!

A lovely rum from Brazilian sugar cane (I think - GF?) - the descriptors are vague on this...
On the other hand, as a little woozy peasant girl, will it really matter if I don't know the origin of what I am drinking????  What do you think?  Do you think Julie drinks them?
Any great plans for Friday?  I think it will be a quiet one here - thank goodness!  Stay safe out there!

  3. Cute top! cachaça isn't rum although they are both distilled from cane sugar. To call it rum would be like saying rye whiskey is a kind of Scotch whiskey. Cachaça has a much "rougher" taste - and very high proof. The rest of the name of the drink is the name of a plantation ("fazenda") where a particular cachaça is produced, i.e., the brand name. Enjoy the drink over lots of ice, it's very relaxing. But don't drive or go near sharp instruments!

    1. Thanks Fred! I could not get a good description anywhere on the web! No driving or sharp instruments - got it!

  4. WFF's got it. Although I will also note cachaca is similar to tequila before it became trendy, in that almost all of what is sold in North America is poor quality, therefore rough and unrefined. Good artisanal cachcas are aged in oak or Brazilian woods like umburana, balsam or a tropical cedar. While still potent, they are much smoother and can have flavours like Christmas or baking (think higher octane spiced white rum with an edge). Cachaca has been made for even longer than rum and is a BIG deal in Brazil, rather like olive oil is to Italians.

Plus I just love to say ka-sha-sa, a party word even if one is 100% sober. No sign of a pup tent. Won't Ethan send George running back to Lake Como? Or does blog also need vacation boyfriend?

    1. FIERY WATER If you can't get to Brazil, but fancy some tropics with your European Vacation, you can find decent cachaca in Portugal and Germany (not sure why the second?)

    2. Well George is notoriously incommunicado at times, he won't even notice and you know that Ethan is a little of the tortured artist type; will leave him with a good book in the corner..

thanks for the info and no, I would not have know how to pronounce that!

    3. Yes, so that's how it's pronounced - have been making a fool of myself again.

    4. Love that word! DD1 says she has it in Santiago. We are going to get you a column, GF, akin to Mario Batale's "What I'm drinking now" in NYT.

    5. Yes, GF - definitely needs her own liquor column...

Tabs - when I was much younger I badly mis-pronounced Halcyon in a group setting. Very embarrassing...

    6. Lane, that would be fab but dangerous - would need to drink more. Go DD1. And pretty sure cachaca will be next really big drink thing, given World Cup and Olympics in Brasil. Hopefully tourists will take home the good stuff.

    7. I'm thinking grown-up Julie might have pastis for l'heure de l'apero. I am not an anise lover, but she doesn't really seem like a champers type and wine a bit ordinary.

    8. AH, but what would Isabel Archer drink?

  5. All you need is the cross body bag and you'll look just like her. I am returning two items to J Crew today and then eating at our brand new Cheesecake Factory for lunch with Em...living large in Tennessee!

    1. Oh have fun BB! Did I tell you son may be going to uni this fall - he seems to be getting excited! I do have a cross-body bag!

    2. Well congrats to your grad once again! It's tough biting your tongue but I do believe he will take more ownership with HIS decision. I can't say Em is excited yet...comes in spurts..but seems still far removed. Have a lovely weekend. We will be seeing World War Z Saturday. I do love Brad Pitt just not the stringy haired one.

    3. will be curious to hear what you think - I don;t think you read the book yet, did you? Since I did - am curious of your opinion!

    4. I actually read the book probably four years ago...or whenever it came out. It was before I got my kindle, which I have had for a while, so I actually have the book. In fact, we all have read it. I'll let you know what I think...it,s gotten mixed reviews.

    5. PS. We didn't make it to the Cheesecake Factory. There was a long line at 11:00 AM. It just opened Tuesday and supposedly there was a four hour wait on opening night...for a chain restaurant! I find it amusing the culinary tastes of East Tennesseans

  6. That top is so pretty. I think I will pass on the cocktail though, that would send me under the table. It's so fun to see what sort of cocktail recipe you'll come up with each week!
Well it is a hot rainy day here, but I'm glad of the break for the garden. A quiet weekend will be nice for you after all of the festivities!

I love the peasant top on you, I think the overall look is very somilar to Jlie's outfit. I am still convinced it it navy though!

  8. Nice top on you-- no prego look. These tops bring me back to another, ahem, decade when similar garb, usually embroidered, decorated college campuses.

A few folks coming for casual dinner. So rainy-- good for reading H.James.

    1. Oh I remember that decade very well...

Finished Mr. James - am looking forward to the discussion!

  9. The top looks lovely on you. I saw it in store and thought the material was very nice, but I opted for the eyelet linen top released earlier this season and my wardrobe has reached its peasant/boho top quota. Regarding your cocktail choice - well, this one is a bit up my alley. I'm first gen american, my parents are from Brazil & Portugal. I grew up in an ethnic enclave of sorts so my childhood was full of food, drink, music and traditions from the old countries. It's been interesting to see some of these things like Caipirinhas and Brazilian "Steakhouses" gain popularity in the US and become "trendy"! But anyhow, in my experience, Caipirinhas are had after a heavy meal (usually Rodizio - servings of various skewered meats or more often, Feijoada - a black bean and meat stew) to help with digestion. Or so the kiddies were told ;) You can also make it with vodka if you don't have cachaça on hand. Then it's called a Caipiroska. Okay, enough luso-brasileiro trivia, enjoy the weekend!

    2. Hey Anon! Great information! I have a good friend who married a wonderful woman from Sao Paulo and lives there now with two beautiful kids. Neat to hear how they would drink it for celebrations! Many thanks and have a wonderful weekend!

  10. I really like it on you and with casual jeans, as you say its a summer black. I have some blousy blouses that I love for summer that are not fitted that I got from France. My husband and I watched the last of the Julie Delpy and Ethan Hawke series and he stopped watching in the middle because he found the chatty star crossed lovers too annoying. I found it very real and she is so watchable and I love how her face and body is ageing without her trying to make it perfect.

  11. I have never met a peasant top that looked good on me, but this looks cute on you (lucky!!). We're grilling and probably watching a movie in tonight. We can't shake off this rain, it has been off and on every day, haphazardly canceling all kinds of outdoor plans. Here it is almost July and I feel like summer hasn't really started yet (sounds like you have the same problem). Have a good weekend!
