Style Question Wednesday: CAPE FEAR

Another Wednesday, Another WMM Style Question!  You would think I would run out of these questions, but what you do not yet fully grasp is this:

1) I am an inately curious being!  I am the BEST guest at a cocktail party as I ask folks all kinds of questions about themselves!  I keep things going, because I understand the cardinal rule of good conversation: people love to talk about themselves...
2) I really have this many questions....

Today, we must discuss capes!

Why?  Could it have been the gusty weather that recalled for me famous ladies who almost blew away on a similarly gusty day?

Nope.

Was it other famous folks with capes who will walk the earth today, leaving death and destruction in their wake?  Or a belly full of too much candy?

Nope.

How about my most recent hottie with a cape?

Nope.  Though isn't he divine??????

It was this image, from the new Anna Karenina capsule collection from Banana Republic!

BR Monogram wool cape
See it here

Ohhh - she is lovely.  Black wool, very mysterious?  Or is it very nurse-like?

No - surely is it shorter and more mysterious than THAT!

I have not owned a cape since 1966.  It has been a long time.  I really love the look of them, but fear the following:

1) I am too busty for a cape
2) I am too short for a cape

So - what do you think?  Do you own a cape?  Do you love a cape?  Should the old WMM get a cape????  Do you like the Banana Republic Cape?  Do you like the Capsule Collection?  Are you looking forward to Anna Karenina???  I am!

I am marginally back on line and can post a couple of pictures of my outfits and my loverly smile this week:

Tippi heather grey sweater, black and grey herringbone capris and little bows.  What do you think of orange belt?  I know - kind of blurry...

Navy pinstripe and polka dots, all JCrew.  Loafers by Cole Haan.

Ugh.  Berry pink skirt, black boots, black jacket which is looking oddly huge and black and white giraffe print scarf.  Not a good one when I see the picture....

Well that is it for today!  Hope all is back to normal in your lives after the storm - was thinking of you all!

Stay Safe out There!

  1. The grey is my favourite outfit.
I do like that cape, I have a navy one, more casual than the one above but with my navy cords it's a failsafe outfit.

    3. I love the idea of Tabs and her navy cape.
Yes black cape is very Count Dracula *insert maniacal laughing*!!
Great post WMM, you crack me up once more. Yes you would be the perfect cocktail party guest!

  2. Oh you have given me flashbacks-- I made a long black cape, heavy wool, with a braid edge, hooded, back in my old hippie days. I probably wore it with a kneelength tapestry vest I also stitched. My girls wish I still had these!

I like the grey outfit too; the cut of the Tippi is flattering, I think.

    1. Lane, vivid mental image of bygone days, impressed you made them yourself!

    2. I thought the same thing - it reminded me of a hakerchief style top I made in home ec when I was 13!

  3. I have one and bought it this year, love it! It's cozy and comfortable and easy. I use it for outerwear for sure. It's nice to throw on over something boring underneath, with some skinnies and boots. Good for days when I feel bloated, and want to wear a sweatshirt and something over it that's not constricting. :) I think the Banana one looks very cute.

  4. CAPED CRUSADER WMM, I got that Anna Karenina email yesterday too - and might go to the BR After 5 event at the Eaton Centre today and will report. Made me think of DBP and her fur collar as well. Not sure about Keira in the title role (reserving judgement beyond the wardrobe). Meantime, I do like that cape (seeing it with pinstriped Thomas Mason shirt, minnie type trousers, tall boots). It's black tho' so on my "no" list for 2012. If I can, try it on will take a LOL piccie for you. (I might pick up the chandelier earrings for holiday wear.)

    2. Oh - I think that sounds like a great look - those eileen fisher riding trousers of Dani's would be divine... I will wait for sale... love love love chandelier earrings...

  5. If you want to avoid the Dracula effect, go with a camel colored one. Black capes always look a bit costum-y IMO, no matter if BR or Gucci.
    I like the grey outfit!
More excited about Gatsby than Karenina here, wardrobe included (although I am sure miss Kneighly will do a fine job as always)

    1. Ema- I am with you Gatsby will be cool!

I am still wound up tighter than a 7 day clock waiting for Les Mis!

      Good idea on the camel!

  6. I think my style is too tomboy for a cape, although I'm not entirely opposed. I'm not a big fan of the Anna Karenina collection. I like the mary janes. Most of it just isn't my style and also it gives me an old vibe. Sorry to be a curmudgeon (am I just thinking this to talk myself out of shopping??)! As always I will probably think it is very nice when I see it in person, but I've only seen it online. Your outfits are very nice, even the one you don't like in the photo. Maybe you need to take one thing away from the top of that outfit to give it more balance?

    1. Cate - you are right. Jacket or scarf - not both!!! That is it EXACTLY!

  7. I think capes look great, but I wonder how practical they are? The closest I have ever come was a huge blanket poncho I wore in my teens - what a pain that was!
My fav is also the grey outfit, especially with the bow shoes.

    1. Okay - the grey is a keeper! Love to get the advice and you know what, the pictures, painful as they are, really help me with weeding out what doesn't work...

  8. I love capes, and would absolutely wear one if I had it. I would probably go with one in Camel or Navy though. I do think you could wear one, and if it arrives too long for your petite frame, then consider having it hemmed to the perfect length for you.

Always love to see your outfits. The grey one is my favorite this time around.

Oh and YES to Thor, btw! He is quite the hottie!

  9. Um, I have to vote no to the black cape. I agree with Ema, black capes are difficult to pull off without looking like a costume. A camel one might be a safer bet - I seem to recall Brooks Brothers offering one a while back? Happy Hallowe'en!! :-)

  10. Just saw the first Count D. in our neighbourhood tonight, which made me think of your post, Ema and Louise's costumey concern. But now my question, did the "chick lit" parcel live up to your expectations? Does DD hint about her presents or is it easy for you to squirrel things away?

As for DD - she is not a snooper. Lots of self-control there!!!

  12. No power at home- escaped to PA. No school for 5 days for the boys. We were so lucky- so many trees and lines down in my town, and my best friends lost their house. The image of the nurse made me smile. It reminds me of the "Cherry Ames" mystery books I read as a child. I always think of Edna Mode in the Incredibles movie listing all the superheroes that got in to trouble because of their capes! I like the look, but don't think I would actually ever wear one. The Tippi with the orange belt looks great!
