My Thanksgiving Love Letter

Every American Thanksgiving, I give thanks for my colourful and larger-than-life neighbours to the south.  To wit, I felt I would do my own thanksgiving love letter of thanks to the good old USA.

This is NOT an exhaustive list, nor is it a list of great intellect or wit.  Just some random thoughts from someone who is quite random these days!

Why I love America and especially at Thanksgiving:

1) Miracle on 34th Street

"I believe, I believe.."

Be a scrooge if you want, but this is the perfect Thanksgiving Day movie, since it starts at the Macy's Parade.

2) Football

Oh sure, I don't understand it and they all seem to fall down a lot, but they do so with great verve and vigour and people seem to spend a lot of time and energy in following this sport and there is THE TAILGATE party.  I have never been to a tailgate party, but I am convinced that I am made to go to one!

3) Giant Parade Floats

I don't know who thought of these, but they are grand, grand, grand!

4) Pumpkin Pie

Oh sure, you may not have invented it, but I think you did, and so you ought to take credit for it.  Pumpkin pie is awesome

5) The original 4 day party weekend.  Rumour has it you shop on Friday, but I imagine that you are all playing football in the backyard and starting to trim the tree!  Do not disabuse me of my fantasy!

6) Your president pardons a turkey!  This is a good thing!  This year it is an actual turkey.  But can we be too far away from him forgiving other turkeys - Gayle's JC styling, bad bangs, people wearing pajamas in public, the last episode of Seinfeld, movember, young men's pants that sit slightly above the knees, tramp stamps, etc..  (insert your own turkey here).

BTW - this doesn't appear to be a pardon to me, but President Obama deciding which direction he will use to slice the turkey tomorrow...

7) You gave the world "A Visit from St. Nicholas", "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" and a "Charlie Brown Christmas", not to mention some of the best christmas movies of all time that have gotten many a poor sod through a lonely christmas.  We salute you!

8) You are thankful.  That is a big thing - for a whole nation to be thankful.  Gratitude is a good thing!

9) You are the home of the Club Boyfriend.    So much to be thankful for!

10) and finally, I am thankful for all of the Americans who pop in here!  I hope that you and your families have a wonderful, restful and peaceful Thanksgiving!    You are all wonderful and I so appreciate you dropping by now and then to say hey!

Happy Thanksgiving!  And to all of us non-Americans on this day:

ENJOY THE CHEAP DEALS AND THE GOOD TV!!!

Stay Safe out there and no fighting over the wishbone!

  1. I know I woke up thinking hang on all the Americans are having a feast and a day off today, still I can't grudge them as I think we have about 6 weeks of holidays/days off in Europe a year and Americans just keep working till they drop!

  2. Your list of turkeys is spot on, that would be my list too!
We are doing Thanksgiving today though it's just the four of us, how could I skip it? I'll be baking pumpkin pie today and wrapping presents. Americans are so sensible, their Thanksgiving has much better timing and they take the four days!

  3. GOBBLE< GOBBLE WMM, you list is non-exhaustively lovely and spot on, thank goodness! I'm popping in our American friends' proud sense of patriotism (even though our combat losses are more likely to make the front pages) and Bruce Springsteen.
I do love that it's a four-day weekend with a Cyber Monday and that "everyone" makes great efforts to go home. Personally, like that ours is a bit more spaced out from Christmas/ year-end and at a more "harvest-y" time.
Wherever the club is, here's to lots of great food and drink, the sense of community and plenty of things to be thankful for. Cheers!

    1. OH NB!!! I am so excited that you are tailgating! This weekend is THE canadian football game, the grey cup, which is the canadian equivalent of superbowl (we even have Justin Bieber doing half time) - will have to get some ribs and chicken wings! Have a wonderful thanksgiving!

    2. WMM, Front St. is mostly closed today and there are stands going up already for Grey Cup Sunday. We are scrubbing up our balcony and planning our own little balcony-gate over the Sunday crowd. (Yes, should be able to hear the Beebs too, but not excited about that part.) Wish you could come! Even though not a that kind of football fan, think CFL players deserve extra support given the pittance most make, second jobs, long travel etc.

    3. Agree completely! I think the Biebs doesn't need our support, anyway! YOu will have so much fun!

  5. Thank you for the Thanksgiving wishes! Pumpkin pie is so awesome. I'm going to need a diet intervention after this weekend. I am sorry to disabuse you of your fantasy, but there is no tree trimming here yet. We cut our tree in December (if we cut it too soon it is dry and shedding needles by Christmas, so we wait). I will be cheering on my (flailing) football team, however, and eating lots of Thanksgiving leftovers.

  7. Thanks for the thanks, WMM and I wish you a lovely day as well. No shopping for us, seems that is the beauty of the day that no gifts etc are involved except the gift of one's presence. Pumpkin pie all made as is the Cranberry Crumble with Fall Fruits ( the late great Richard Sax's recipe, check it out). Go Pats!

  8. Just a quick hello here before dashing off to family festivities .... As husby says, how can one fault a day dedicated to family, food and football. It's his absolute favorite day of the year. Thanks for making me laugh and the warm and cozies of your club. Have a sparkling day!
