Black Friday, in which WMM attempts another dress/coat outfit

Happy Friday All!

I am on my last day of bereavement leave and it is Black Friday and all, so I gave in to my baser instincts this a.m.....

I don't see anything at J Crew I want or need, but I have been watching a lightweight wool coat from Banana Republic, which went on sale for 40% off this am.  I also saw a matching wool blend sweater dress and for a combined total of $290 CDN, felt this might be worth a try if it worked.  If it does not, no worries, they send you a free return shipping code!  I wish J Crew would do that!

The colour is the most divinely named "red delicious".  I love apples and this appears to be a wonderful version of red which I think I will be able to pull off.

and matching coat:

On the website, the model, is wearing the jacket open with the sash either removed or tied in back. In that picture, the colour seems more burgundy than wine-y, so we shall see which is the truer colour. Not sure how warm the coat is, but am hopeful it is lightweight, since it says it is only partially lined, which means it is likely too cold for wearing outdoors once we hit January here, which is what I am hoping for as I want to wear it indoors.  Regardless, I think it was worth a try and will let you know when it arrives!  I think it could look very chic in the office if it actually works!

In a related colour story, Dani's recent post on Christmas china, and the fact that we are now approximately 1 month until the big day, inspired me to dig out my own china yesterday and get it all washed up and into rotation

My pattern is "The Night Before Christmas" by the Johnson Brothers and I purchased it at the Royal Doulton Store here in town.  Last year, I purchased many of the serving pieces and a few platters.  This year, I  purchased plates.  It is microwave and dishwasher friendly.

It is a lovely pattern and individual pieces contain lines from the poem.  Here are some of the pieces sitting on my little table which I have covered in a lovely velvet tablecloth for the holidays:

 And some close-up shots:

It matches very well in my dining room, since my old table has matching chairs in red leather:

Finally, in a completely unrelated note, but more as a public service announcement, run don't walk, to see the movie Lincoln.  It is a spectacular movie and Daniel Day Lewis is truly a genius.  I think that they should simply hand he, Tommy Lee Jones and Sally Field their oscars right now.

Stay safe if you are shopping out there and have a lovely day!

  1. WMM, I saw the dress in the store last week and it is a very pretty wine-red. Do I detect a Christmas colour story in this post? The BR return shipping label comes right in the box, just slap and send back, no PTTO, how good is that. Thinking of you this morning and hope you were able to get most of the big concerns organized. As for Lincoln, on tomorrow night's schedule. This time round wonder if Sally will make a more temperate speech? Although nothing can top Daniel's last homage to "The Queen." I think Hopkins/ Mirren will be the other big contenders.

    1. I think you are right re: Hopkins/Mirren. My money is still on Daniel. I like that Sally makes intemperate speeches - she is kooky in such a fabulous way!!!

Yes would be nice to have a christmas colour story!

  4. Honestly I don't know if I can take seeing Daniel Day Lewis being so brilliant, he's already so handsome I could faint! I can't wait to see the movie, not sure when I can get there but asap to be sure.
Thanks for showing us your Christmas china, it looks fabulous in your dining room and love the bits of poem on the different pieces, it's so charming! And a lovely match to the dress + coat which as you know will get the big thumbs up from me!
The Christmas dress for my little girl arrived today, the one you picked for her... she loves it! We'll have to get her to model it!

  5. Still in post-thankful haze. Yes, democracy is far from perfect, and yet it works. Saw Lincoln this week, stirrings of familial pride, stirrings of national pride.

    1. Are you related to Lincoln? I am too, through my mum's side. Very distantly, however!

    2. Nothing that impressive, ancestor fought at Gettysburg with 4TH NY Heavy Artillery.

    3. Neat! I love history! The beginning of the movie was so graphic and certainly gave a lot of pause...

  6. Oh my goodness! You have the non-PC version where Santa is still smoking a pipe! Haven't you read about the new version HERE? LOL I am always amazed that some people really have nothing better to do than revise old favorites. Anyway, love your Christmas dishes. Have a wonderful weekend.

    1. I have an old version of the children's book with Santa smoking a pipe, horrors! lol

    2. Ridiculous, right? As if during the reading of the poem, children are going to focus on the pipe with everything else going on in the story.

BTW, I found a free ship code for Sundance - FSHJD2. I seriously have to try those cowgirl pajamas.

    3. No, they took Santa's pipe? I could cry.

  7. You can wear your new outfit with your Christmas dishes, excellent match! I tried on the coat in that color and it is gorgeous, I think you will like it. The weight is what you think, almost like a light-weight boiled wool, perfect for indoors or a not so cold day outdoors. It has an unstructured feel to it. I didn't buy it because I didn't have a need for a lightweight coat, but it was very nice.

    1. Well I am crossing my fingers it fits and looks good! For the prices today, I thought I could justify it! Wonder why JC never goes that low?

  8. We are taking (dragging) the boys to see Lincoln this weekend-at my insistence. I can't wait.
Your color story is pretty. I saw the coat in store last week and it is very rich and striking. BR has some lovely pieces this season and their prices are so reasonable. I buy most of DH's sweaters and pullovers there-they last for years and up nicely.

  9. Oh Julie, let me know what they think of it!

I hope the outfit works as the colour looks divine! I wish BR had tall sizes for my DH.
