Once Upon a Time....

Well it is pretty much winter where I live now, save for the dusting of the white stuff (we have had one snowstorm thus far with more surely to come) and Christmas is right around the corner and my fashion style begins to change and I long to dress like Gretel!

Yesterday, you saw that I am now sporting J Crew's fair isle leggings:

I want to wrap myself in folklore prints and live in a gingerbread house this time of year.

The wonderful M introduced me to the Sundance Catalogue site a couple of weeks back when she blogged about getting the gorgeous Copenhagen Sweater in her wonderful blog Shopping with M here.

The whole site put me into ecstasy!  I have not yet gotten my December J Crew catalogue, but I am with others in thinking that it just doesn't seem, well, holiday-y to me.  (do you like how I create new words all the time?)

But the Sundance site!!!  I could SMELL the cookies baking.  I could hear Bing Crosby playing in the background and I could feel my nose getting all nippy from the cold.

Get your little Gretel on here
I need this Lapland dress for when I ski over to grandma's house for hot chocolate and to deliver freshly baked muffins.....

The Forever Folkloric Easy Cardigan will be nice on snowy afternoons:

Oh - the Gretchen Cardigan will be wonderful when we play boardgames, won't it?

GRETCHEN CARDIGAN

You will need the silver snowflake skirt to wear with your new sweaters.  Dani - I thought of you as soon as I saw this!

SILVER SNOWFLAKE LACE SKIRT

Oh and you will need some new ornaments:

Perhaps a little sock garland?

or a new tree skirt from Sundance:

Or go to Hannah Andersson and pick up a lovely little sweater dress:

The "Tell Me a Folk Tale Dress here
If you don't have a little girl, better get one and put her in this one:

Or Anthropologie has a lovely ornament:

Or the stitchy peplum cardigan:

You are going to need some books, too, for when it snows and we don't feel like going out.  Jan Brett was always beloved by my children when they were little and she captures that folkloric flavour so wonderfully in all of her books:

and of course, you will need your own copy of Hansel and Gretel:

Or perhaps your own Hansel and Gretel Christmas ornament?

Harbour's Hansel & Gretel Ornament (Round)
Buy yours here
Or if you prefer blown-glass, how about these beauties?

Hansel, Gretel and Witch Christmas Ornament Inge-Glas of Germany

The witch is very creepy and I don't think Hansel and Gretel know what they are in for!

You will find me below for the next several weeks, getting all cozy and getting my storybook on:

I also see that Philip Pullman has just released a new retelling of Fairy Tales from the Brothers Grimm:

Fairy Tales From The Brothers Grimm: A New English Version

I love Philip Pullman and actually re-read his "Dark Materials" trilogy this summer.  I am intrigued to take a look at this as I love fairy tales, as you can tell!
What about you?  Does this time of year bring out your inner Nordic goddess?  Do you want to cozy up in fair isle sweaters and eat gingerbread!

No witches allowed!

Have a happy Monday and stay safe out there!

    1. Hi Ina - that sounds beautiful! I don't normally gravitate to flklore styles until Christmas time - must be my inner child!

  2. I would love to be feeling all cozy at this time of the year, with Thanksgiving looming. But we are hovering a few degrees above and below 70F so it's not even serious sweater weather yet. (I know, whine, whine!) I can be easily distracted by all that but thank goodness I've been severely disciplined by the horrible cashmere experience of late (post to come later this week, I hope!) so that is having the hangover effect on all sweaters. But my trousseau has a plenty so give me some cozy-loving weather and I will do it proud.

As in real life, I'm always late to the party. Thanks for the shout-out in your last post, you went ahead before I could comment. Those tomo pink flats are lovely with the pants so we will really be bobbsey twinsies as soon as a FP promo comes on. Too bad the heavyweight silk bow blouse didn't work for you but didn't you just love the feel of that silk? I should have pounced on the leopard blouse but while trying to be good, convinced myself I will never mess with a cami under the chiffon. You sure looked fabulous in it!!

    1. Well Tiffany Rose - you know what I always say (well I always say this in my head!) - there is always another 30% off and a popback or two so it is almost never say never..... The tomo flat are so comfy and I keep seeing more and more ways I will wear them apart from the crazy pants! I loved the feel of that silk. Is it the same feel as the luxe silk blouse? I cannot find that blouse in my size in a colour I want or need, but I must simply follow my own advice above!!!

    2. You're right, there's always another sale. The luxe silk blouse is even more lush. If only every silk shirt I have feels like that ... sigh.

  3. Now I want to dress like Hansel and Gretel too! What a hilarious post WMM but what beautiful things, very festive and cheery. Okay going to look at the skirt you've chosen for me!

    1. I <3 that the boots with your skirt are the Sorel "chugalugs" - great name.

    2. I know - the chugalugs are very appropos and could be worn nicely for weekly miller time....

  4. This made me laugh: "for when I ski over to grandma's house for hot chocolate and to deliver freshly baked muffins....." Yes! Me too! Sundance knows how to do a winter catalog. I want to live in the Sundance catalog, sign me up!

    2. I always imagine running into Robert Redford there, from his Out of Africa days but transferred to a snow scene ...

  5. SUGARPLUM FAIRY Have a good Monday WMM! And FYI, your season and special wardrobe fantasies just make me happy (Elton John's closet raid remains my fave tho'.) Glad you had a good time at Skyfall. I am not much of one for sweater-y holiday wardrobe fantasties thanks to growing up in hot spots and having to wear Dale of Norway sweaters for work a while back http://daleofnorway.shptron.com/
But I do have a great necklace from the early days of Sundance retail. And you've definitely inspired me to a Christmas classics reading list.

    1. Oh, and while you're bringing muffins to gran can I have some biscuits, pretty please? Will trade for preserves.

    2. Thanks GF - I think my biscuits would be divine with Dani's scotch marmalade!!!

Am dying to know why you had to wear nordic sweaters! Am imagining you at the desk of Air Iceland or something!!! I am definitely going to be doing my canon of Christmas books!

    3. As it happens, I did do some work with Icelandair way back when they first started flying to Hfx. But the sweaters are part of official winter uniform for Fairmont hotels in Canadian Rockies and management joins in, particularly during Xmas and special events. Dale also do official uniform sweaters for Canadian Alpine Ski team and Chateau Lake Louise hosts a World Cup ski race, so I used to have to wear mine non-stop for 2-3 weeks every Nov. Also got to sport 'em for Robert Kennedy's Celebrity Ski fundraiser and pin Farrah Fawcett in her swag Tommy Hilfiger ski pants, but that's another winter's tale.

    5. Cool, curious! I've been gone for a good many years now. But a friend of mine was head of comms. at Tourism Jasper until last year - he likely knows her along with @JasperThaBear.

  6. Ooh, I just love everything here! Isn't that winter catalog of theirs just so cheery and cozy and wonderful? I want to wear one of their Gretel outfits every day of winter. Hm, think I might have a spot of cocoa this morning instead of another cup of coffee. :)

    1. I just think that the Sundance catalogue is all christmas and goodness itself! Yesterday at chapters bookstore I bought a little box of gingerbread toy soldiers. I was just smitten with them! They are divine with my apple cinnamon tea and their little hats perfect for dipping...

  7. Sundance customer service is lovely and helpful on the phone, too, as good little elves should be. I've stopped doing major home decorations, some lights and wreaths are about all I'm up to this year. I add an ornament or two to our tree every year so that it's a collection of all the bright and colorful and good stuff from Christmases past and I love it, as I love doing Christmas dinner and making cards, but if I hear "You don't want anything for Christmas, do you?" one more time, my attorney will post messages that my blog friends are going to have to raise bail for me.

Don't forget to enter my giveaway - stocking stuffers could come in handy.

    1. Thanks for the reminder Fred! I entered but haven't posted yet here, as I am so forgetful. It is clear to me that being the executor of the estate is a thankless job!!!! I am run ragged and it;s day one. I am taking entire week off of work (I actually have to work this weekend) and am trying to get things done this week.

I really love that little dress... Will watch for a sundance sale in coming weeks - perhaps black friday!

I do not allow the "you don't want anything for christmas talk here". It will be of no surprise to you that I am a more is more kind of gal. I don't need expensive gifts, but I do love to open a whole passel of books and the odd bauble on christmas day!

  8. I am itching just looking at you in those leggings! Lots of nice things at Sundance, I may have to give them a try. I don't want to be a cowgirl but I have a strange desire to buy the retro cowgirl pajamas.

Are you one of *those* people who go Christmas crazy?

    1. xoxo - you are so sweet - what do you think? Do you think I am one of those people who go Christmas crazy??? :-) heehee! I try not to be too bad, but I do like to deck a hall! I do not go crazy baking, but I like a nice meal and some champagne and a really good (real) Christmas tree with a bunch or ornaments! Oh Lord, I am one of those people!!!!!!!!!

    2. OH PS - I love the retro cowboy PJS!!!!!

  9. Hi WMM! You look so comfy and cozy in your fair isle leggings...love them on you! I also love Christmas. The season is my favorite time of the year, and always makes me wish (even more than usual) that I could live somewhere cold with lots of snow. Today was at least a little bit chilly here, and I'm hoping that it continues to be that way through the end of the week, or at least for Thanksgiving Day. :)

I always enjoy looking through the Sundance catalog each month. There are always plenty of items that I like, but I have yet to place an order with them.

I hope you are doing well, and have been able to get some rest. I have been thinking about you. :)

    1. Thanks FFM! I am not really familiar with Sundance, so this has been a treat for me - I am going to watch for a sale and see if I can snaffle something up!

Don't suppose you want me to pray for snow? I bet you would just like to wear some heavy clothes!
