It's the Most Wonderful Day of the Year: OSCARS 2014!!!!!

Can you believe they're here again?

Though I will be in Florida, you KNOW I will be watching.  I loves the Oscar more than I can say.  I always have, I always will.  Does this make me shallow?  Of course it does!  Do I CARE that this makes me shallow?  Not one whit!!!!

Cause you know I loves me a movie.  We are the people who had to build floor to ceiling bookshelves in our family room for the DVD collection, after all:

Nice shelf, Barry!

We will be watching in Florida and I anticipate champagne and chocolate and potato chips, since we are trying to be more cultured..

Oh and Ellen will host and I love Ellen!

We all know this is about politics as much as it is about good movies (and thank god there were good movies this year), so I offer my predictions:

Best Actress:

It would appear that Cate Blanchett is a lock on this one.  But watch out for Dame Judi on the inside, who ought to have won best supporting actress for Skyfall...

Best Actor:

All right, all right, all right...

Everyone else can stay home.  Matthew is unstoppable, not only for his excellent work in Dallas Buyers Club, but because the academy voters likely have him on their mind from Tabs and I's beloved True Detective...

Best Supporting Actress:

This is a toss-up between Jennifer and Lupita, but if they are close, watch for Julia to sneak in.

Best Supporting Actor:

My goodness that Chris Hemsworth is a strapping chap...

No one can catch Jared Leto here.  It is his, and deservedly.

Best Picture & Director:

This is all Twelve Years a Slave territory and its director, Steve McQueen will take home the goal for really telling the story.

I guess we'll see how I do when it's all over, won't we?

Luckily, I never wager on these things!

Have a wonderful Oscar night and here's an extra cocktail recipe and enough time to go get the ingredients!

Red Carpet Cocktail:

Red Carpet Cocktails

Simmer 3/4 cup pomegranate juice and 1/4 cup sugar in a small skillet until reduced by half, about 5 minutes. Stir in a dash of orange-flower water; let cool to room temperature. Pour 1 to 2 teaspoons of the syrup into each of 6 flutes. Add a splash of gin and top with champagne; stir gently

God, I wonder if Mickey would send one to the room....

Stay Safe out there!

  1. Hello Wendy,

We feel that it is rather refreshing to confess one's shallow habits...if indeed they are shallow that is....since it just serves to confirm that we are all human really. Although one would dearly like to be able to show not a jot of interest about who is stepping onto the red carpet, or what they are wearing....nevertheless, we shall wait for news in glorious anticipation. For us, there can be no live viewing as we have not owned a television for thirty years.

We too love films and are deeply envious of your collection.....and the shelves. They look really fabulous how you have them arranged.

And, as for the red carpet cocktail.....perfect!

  2. oooh, great post! I love the Oscars too, but we no longer have cable, but instead Netflix, sooooo, I am going to look for a website that is showing them online.

LOVE your shelves in the family room. That's the most awesome idea I've seen as to a solution for movie storage. xox

  3. That is a nice shelf, good job Barry! We just saw Nebraska last night and I would have liked to see Dallas Buyer's Club before today but it hasn't happened... still I am very excited for the Oscars and I hope you have fun watching it! I need to figure out our snacks, where will you be having dinner tonight? Are you having a blast? Hope so. xox

    1. So funny Dani, we watched Nebraska too last night. What a great movie, so eloquent despite the fact not a lot of words are said. And that last scene when he sees his old flame from the truck and she looks at him with regret is one of the best "romantic" scenes in movies ever!

  5. As Dani I was upset that Netflix pushed the release date of Dallas Buyers to next Tuesday, I was looking forward to seeing Matthew and Jared performance BEFORE the Oscars. But I have to say that I am cheering for Leo tonight, I think that at this moment in his career he deserves sone recognition (I saw the Wolf at the movie theater and enjoyed both the movie and his performance even in my opinion he deserved to win for The Departed, that we just rewatched for the sixth time).
I am also hoping that "Let it go" from Frozen will win over the U2/Mandela song. It is one of the most liberating songs ever written and all my daughter's friends are obsessed with it (and the moms too)!
In any case it is going to be fun to watch as always (except my husband is leaving for London at 7.30 so I count on the community to share with!).

  6. I am trying to squeeze in Twelve Years a Slave before tonight's broadcast and wished I had been able to get in Dallas Buyers' club but maybe the Oscars will spur me on if it wins. I have a wish that Leo will win one this year too since he does well even if his role choices are getting too similar.

    1. Mary it was excellent too, I won't mind if it wins over Dallas Buyers Club.

  7. Dallas Buyers Club was incredible, he needs to win, as for American Hustle - what drugs were folk on? It was an ok film but certainly not Oscar worthy.
Wish I could watch - sniff.

    1. I wish you were here with us tabs! I haven't seen American hustle, but I still do not get Argo winning last year!

    2. Me too, that movie was really minor...

  8. Agree with all your predictions except for director which may go to Alfonso Cuaron for Gravity. Like Ema, I'm rooting for Leo but they will give the award to Matthew. Like Tabitha, I felt American Hustle was overrated. Give me David O. Russell before he went mainstream. I am envious of your DVD shelves. Mine are in boxes somewhere except for my beloved Monty Python boxed set which is always ready for re-watching.

    1. Marie! I hear you! Alfonso could sneak in, though they usually match pic and director! Love Monty python

    2. Alfonso HAS to get the Best Director. HAS to!

  9. I wish Forrest Whitaker had been nominated for best actor in The Butler, the wonderful history of civil rights and story of serving as butler to 8 presidents. I don't understand why American Hustle at all. I just feel this wonderful performance--so much more nuanced and important than many of these-- was overlooked. I will watch some of this, but probably check out way before the end.

Hope you are having the BEST time! I was at the Vinoy for 4 days last week in St P-- wonderful.

  10. Hope you're having fab time with red and juicy cocktails and lovely heat. In the Ca Disney, you're not allowed alcohol in some of the places...which may be why I've never been...have not seen American Hustle but not understand all the fuss about Wolf of Wall Street, repetitive and dull

  11. I wish you were my neighbor, I'd come right over and watch the Oscars with you if you'd let me. The red carpet cocktail is perfect.

Wow that's a lot of movies in them there shelves. Can you send Barry over already?
