Burning Down the House!

If you have a dance party, you ought to invite me.  What I lack in moves, I more than make up for in enthusiasm.

I am not necessarily coordinated, but that also has its place at a dance party.  There always needs to be at least one person who "trips" over a piece of furniture while doing a complicated twirl while holding a drink.

I am that person.  It is a big responsibility and I take that job seriously.

If you put on just about anything from the late 70s to late 80s, I am there.  I am so there!  And one of my favourite has got to be Talking Heads' Burning Down the House.

What made me think of that?

Well Saturday night we went to our friends Mike and Mary's house for the 2nd annual spring solstice ceremony.

You can read all of the details on Mary's blog here.  She and Mike put a lot of work into ushering Spring back to Canada.  We were full of awe and gratitude!

Mike is an artist and even the way Wicker Man was standing was kind of unnerving to me:

He looks kind of defiant, doesn't he?

One by one we walked a narrow snowy path to put our offerings of old socks and in my case, expired cream of wheat (who has expired cream of wheat you must ask - I guess me, I must respond).

On the way down to wicker man I stepped into a deep hole and fell over.  This might or might not be related to the wine I'd been drinking in the kitchen before the solemn ceremony.  All I could do was lay on the snow, in a snowstorm, and laugh.

I should have been afraid, as once lit, Wicker Man was a fierce and awesome foe:

We trudged our snowy carcasses back into the house and proceeded to enjoy a fabulous meal.  I may have added Bailey's Irish Cream to the dregs of red wine.  I do not recommend it, but that's what I'm here for, to provide these words of advice, so you don't have to try these things yourself.

This weekend's advice:

  • stay on the path
  • some forms of alcohol do not mix
  • dance like your life depends on it and
  • pick really cool people to hang out with and perform ancient druid ceremonies.

Thanks Mike and Mary!  Hope everyone has a great Tuesday and Stay Safe Out there!

To add a little more Spring, how about Bing and Fred to help us get in the mood?

  1. It sounds like an amazing celebration! Thanks for taking the "do not mix" hit for me:-). I've done my fair share of those myself. No fun the following day. I've never heard of that burning twig man ceremony. Sounds Halloween-ish, but in the snow.

    1. There's a 'horror" film about it, all set up north, it's a very light horror, I can't stand real horror films, it has an air of quiet menace but incorporates all of the old ways of this country.

    2. Tabs - is it the one with Nicholas Cage? My daughter showed me the ending on the way out the door and he was really over-acting (as only he does!) but would be interested to see the rest

  2. I want to bow to Mike and Mary - utterly incredible best best ever!

It's one of my favourite films as you know, this is a beautiful paean to Celtic/Norse heritage.

    1. They did a fabulous job! Mike read a poem, we all had to recite what we were giving up and what we were hoping for spring and summer!

  3. What a fantastic thing to do! That wicker man is amazing, and in love Burning down the house. In fact, I started humming it when I saw the title of this post without even realising.
I so need you at our parties!!

    1. I think I could be a party fixture! I am the perfect guest - I burn fast and then am gone by midnight so you don't have to kick me out in the middle of the night! However, I am known for losing my attention span and changing songs mid-songs later in the evening in search of the "perfect" one..

  4. Need to google this tradition. Imagine emerging from a long winter in the far North, spent with little light, no electric, no films; does call for something dramatic and purging!

Love dancing, especially outside in the summer. I'm sitting out for now as I've contracted some weird knee bursitis and suddenly can barely walk. I fear you are in the line of the latest near hurricane snow predicted for tonight and tomorrow! Unbelievable!! MLane flew home a say early to beat the storm.

    1. Surely to god this will be it for winter storms! Tell MLane to batten down the hatches! I need a few things at the grocery store, so am popping in there later this morning!

I had never really heard of wicker man, except for the movie, so was interesting!

When do you head home? As for bursitis - had it in my hip years ago - how painful!

  5. Thanks for the shout out for Saturday night Wendy. I just realized how much snow we got while we performed our ceremony. Hopefully Mother Nature's last laugh at our expense for this year!

  6. Great celebration! We have a similar tradition here... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buergbrennen it looks like your celebration is related to it... I love that you have been celebrating it amongst friends. Best way ever!

    1. I wonder if that is the forerunner of the Boogie Man?

  7. I know that tradition too. In Germany we celebrated burning the winter, which was a pile of wood in the form of a snowman.

  8. Come on over and shake a leg...just don' t fall n the pool. We are having our last cold snap and then spring weather straight into summer. I did see the Nic Cage Wickerman and it was really bad. My favorite movie of his is still Air Con.

My favourite Nic Cage movie is Moonstruck. I watch that movie at least once a year!

  9. Wow, WMM,
You definitely had a more exciting weekend than I did! Funny you mention that time frame. I just told my older son- who rolled his eyes- that I wanted to watch the Breakfast Club with him. By some crazy coincidence when I looked it up last night, it was the 30th ! anniversary of the movie, yesterday...

  10. Fabulous. Like a mini Burning Man! So much fun. But Bailey's and red wine? Please no.

I love to dance. I honestly think I should have been on electric circus or something. In related news, delusion is underrated!
