The Fall Style Week Continues...A J Crew Order...

Well yesterday, you saw what I wore this summer and my new checklist for buying/keeping an item.

You have seen my fall colour story.

I have inventoried my closet for fall - I know what I have and what I need. (although I am definitely buying the stylebook app for my iPad that Audrey Bella blogged about here

The Gaps - Skirts

After the great purge of 2013 I had 2 navy, 1 royal blue and 1 camel/navy left in my closet.  I am undecided if I want to keep last year's snakeskin print.  I wore it twice.

I actually like to wear skirts in the fall and winter with tights and boots.  I decided that at least two skirts could be added.  But only if they were killer comfy.  See below for how I am proposing to fill the gap!

The Gaps - Pants

I need bootcut jeans and navy ponte knit trousers.  That's it.

The Gaps - Sweaters

I needed 1 or 2 vnecks. See below for one.

The Gaps - Blouses

only something special - Anthro below or something else?

The Gaps - coats

none required.

The Gaps - dresses

One day dress - very comfy - assuming this will be hard to find.  This is for wearing around the house.  Casual.

The Gaps - shoes

I would like a menswear style pair.  See below.

That was it!

All of these things were extremely helpful as I reviewed various retailers' fall rollouts.

You may or may not recall yesterday's questions that I must now asked myself before I make a purchase:

1) does it fit?
2) is it comfortable?
3) is it flattering?
4) do I love it?
5) am I actually going to wear it or have I just seen someone I like wear it or a jcrew/anthro/whatever label model wear it and think I need it too?
6) does it fit with my style statement - which in the end should be linked to #4....If you recall, my style statement is Creative-Nostalgic.

What did I like in yesterday's JC rollout?

Actually, I liked quite a lot.  I didn't like a lot of the prices.  Some of it was crazy-spensive!

Some of the things have already been taken off my "like list" after I read the reviews today!  Hello two-tone zip cardigan:

Two-tone zip cardigan
You did seem like you might poof out just where there should be no more poofing out...

I loved the floral capris but said: "Wendy - you already have floral café capris.  two pairs.  one that is pretty much new.  You are aspiration ally dressing again..."

Petite Collection café capri in antiqued floral
Maybe you will hit some ridiculous sale before the holidays and we will be together....maybe I will be a published author by fall and taking meetings in NYC.....
Oh you crazy-quilt sweater that is certainly creative but which costs $580 CDN plus tax, you could have been mine....

Collection cashmere tile sweater in moss

The Eaton Trouser in walnut is divine, but I know I am not likely to wear it ...

Eaton boy trouser in bi-stretch wool
oh and why aren't you lined?
The patch pocket pencil skirt is lovely.  I need a grey skirt.  It fits 4, 5 & 6 (has a bit of a nostalgic vibe) and we can't know about 1, 2 & 3 until it arrives...

Patch-pocket pencil skirt
EN ROUTE!

Pale Pink Cashmere Sweater.  Again, 4, 5, and maybe 6.  The rest will have to wait for it to come:

Collection cashmere V-neck sweater
EN ROUTE!

Monk Strap Loafers.  I have loved this look all summer.  Given some paypal $ I had and my rewards card, I decided to give it a try:

Monk strap loafers
EN ROUTE!
This is either going to be really awesome or a no-go.  I think it will be really awesome.

What I thought about and am still on the fence about:

Collection Salon Mini:

Collection salon mini in floral brocade

Retro, creative vibe, comfy I think, funky with tights and boots and a grey t and  jean jacket.  Colour story is right in the pinks and grey.  Not sure....This will wait until there is a super sale and then we will see...

Anthropologie has intrigued me with a blush lace blouse...

Blushed Lace Blouse #anthropologie

And I need to see what Nougat London and others have added to their wares this fall...

I did pick up this 100% merino wool skirt at the J Crew Factory big sale last week and am keeping (will try and take some pictures this weekend!)  Looks amazing with a wide belt and my black riding boots...

Factory merino pleated skirt
A great skirt for the $50 I paid for it...

I tried the poly blend hen sweater, but I do not think it will be a keeper - kind of itchy...

Factory warmspun intarsia hen sweater

But what I also know for sure is that one needs to leave room in one's closets for the completely unexpected - the flashy thing... the thing whose love dare not speak its name...

That could be the flashy skirt above or mirror metallic loafers or some tory burch divinity.

One can't know everything, can one.  And in the end, we must have our basics and stick to your stories... but we must also SING with the birds.....

How about you all?  Did you pull the trigger?  Have you ordered from anyone else along the way?

Have a great Thursday and stay safe out there!

Tomorrow: shall we go on a boat ride?

  1. I bought the Horsing Around Sweatshirt in Navy and the Houndstooth Tippi in Navy/Grey. That is all. I already have at least 12 outfits made with the Horse Sweatshirt and 6 with the Houndstooth Tippi. Because I took advantage of the promo today, those two items were very doable in terms of price. I have not bought this quickly in a long time. I usually wait and wait until coveted items hit sale.

I feel that you using an eagle eye to see what and where the gaps lie is so important! Makes you more conscious of what you are buying and what not to buy. We all get a little mindless at times when there is something new to look at or we get caught up in the excitement from others about a certain item. You are being very honest and very smart when it comes to shopping. Good for you! Please post those en route items. I'm eager to hear what you think, esp the Monk Straps!

    1. HI Wendy - I will do so! I am eying the horse sweatshirt - how are you wearing yours?

    2. I wrote out a list. I can email it to you if you'd like. I came up with close to 15 outfits...yikes!

    3. What's your email? Keep in mind, the list has no pix...you would need to visualize! haha...I'm not good with polyvore either...;-(

  2. Can't wait to see if your items are a success or not. Fingers crossed for success.
    I love the monk straps!!!

As I posted in my blog, nothing for me yet. That lovely tile sweater is $727 on the Aus site!!
I did order the Andie Chinos in fatigue, a stripy tee and a jackie cardigan the other day. The Andies are backordered until mid Sept, but the other items should arrive tomorrow.
My Spring gaps are numerous in my head, but in reality, I probably only need a couple of cardigans and a few new dresses. I never really like the look of J Crew dresses. I've been eyeing up a couple in Hugo Boss. More $$ than J Crew, but Very Very beautifully made!

    1. HI Ruth - I love Hugo Boss! I only have one pair of HUgo Boss flats! I cannot do JC dresses. I will look in the shops here and am waiting to see what Nougat London has!

  3. Number 5 is such a good question, I need black cords, that's about it, my legs are always freezing in my black jeans in winter time.
I liked that grey skirt/outfit too, but I think that in real life those pockets would look really messy and be quite unflattering.

    1. well I will be able to tell you if they are messy or not next week. I ordered up a size in the hopes they will lie flat. If not, back they go! I am somewhat hopeful as some of those thing JC does well. I think that's why I got crazy about the paige ponte knit pants - much warmer than jeans in the dead of winter!

    2. Yeah, pockets like that should be on your butt not where muffin is.

    3. Can't agree ladies - it depends on the cut. I have a black pink tartan skirt like this with patch pockets on front and it is divine. I'll be curious about this one and will let you know!

  4. Floral capris look fab but I always worry its a one hit wonder...

  5. I got the calf hair belt. How exciting. It is very hard to find 1)navy belt and 2)one with silver hardware. I also ordered some green top since I love the color and really want to add a green top to my wardrobe...I may just be trying too hard.

    1. PS. I love the monk strap loafers but bought a similar pair last winter. I actually wear mine the most with my AG Stevie cords (most comfortable pants on the planet and sooo soft).

    2. I think yours inspired me! I have been lusting after a pair all year! They came in at $150 so I justified them!

  6. You make such a great analyst! I saw your pink blazer yesterday at Anthro and it fits your creative, nostalgic to a T. Wait for a sale though since it's made of a lighter fabric and it may be on sale soon with cooler weather.

As you know, I was not a fan of Jcrew's rollout yesterday. I like your choices which are classic and the exceptions to the urban, edgy, sporty, downtown Kristen Stewart look it seems to be going for with all the leather, baseball caps and drawstring pants. It's fine with me though if it has nothing for the "eccentric English lady complete with absentminded look" that I turn into in the fall (tweeds, turtlenecks and wool stockings). Having said that, I went home with the merino tweed front yesterday (my unexpected)and I'm just waiting for my only gap right now (a navy double serge wool skirt).

I can't say enough good things about that stylebook app, let me know how you find it.

    1. Hi Marie - glad you got the Merino tweed front - so nice. I do think that some of the things in jcrew this season are a bit more madewell to me. I think I join you in the eccentric English lady look!

  7. I saw the Floral Cafe' Capris and thought of you. I am looking at some "crazy pants" myself but can't seem to pull the trigger just yet. And I love the Mini, I just don't know if I can pull off the pink on my bottom half.

    1. I was reading something recently that said for my body type (inverted triangle) - the pattern is better on the bottom. I have no bottom or hips, only belly, and if it is cut right, well away to the races I go!

  8. I really like those monk strap loafers! Hope they work out for you. Great deal on the pleated skirt!

    1. I hope the monk straps are as nice IRL! My VPS said they were amazing... we shall see!

  9. Glad you crossed off that awful zip up sweater off your list. It looks like a members only jacket for women.

Good for you for sticking to your list! The roll out was nicer than previous few, but everything I wanted was collection or excluded from promo. I hope you love your new purchases, although I think front pockets look better in a-line skirts. Lets hope jcrew got it right.

    1. I am curious to see the skirt. Having no hips, a lot of time the pencils actually fit me like alines. Cannot wait to get a look at them!

  10. I haven't looked yet at the rollout, but that pink Vneck looks classic and a great color for you. The patchwork sweater looks a hot mess to me, but maybe IRL is cute? Good for you, actioning those choices right away; takes me weeks of dithering!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Well, the dithering will happen here if none of it works - I ordered two pair of gap jeans to try and they are both heading back. Unless I am giddy over something and it really works, back it goes!

  11. I am loving a lot of things in this rollout and hope to go to the store on saturday and just try on a lot of things and maybe buy some crazy pants or a pencil skirt.
The only thing i ordered is the horse sweatshirt in grey and i think it will be versatile for everyday. It reminded me of the heart tippi that i got last year and i loved the cheekyness of it and wore a lot.

You picked some very nice things and hopefully they are all keepers:)

    1. HI Ina - I have to admit - I have been eying the horse sweatshirt in navy... especially since the hen sweater was a no go...

  12. I was a fool for this rollout, ugh. I bought the merino pocket sweater, the Marlie purse, and the 83 Nikes in the mortar color. I did not order the monk strap shoes but I really like them and I will look forward to your review of them. I'm not particularly tall and I would wear these without socks so I'm worried they would shorten me even more. I also don't know if they are different enough from my Darby loafers in terms of utility. I would want to try them on. I like that pink v-neck sweater you have en route a lot!

    1. Hi Cate!

I was fascinated by the love for the 83 Nikes! I am not a sneaker person so thought it was interesting how much folks loved those! It looks like your purchases are great! I love the merino pocket sweater - if I thought I could wear them with leggings and boots I would be all over them! I think they are unlikely to work for me, sigh..

I am planning to wear the monk strap shoes with either trousers or with shorter skirts and tights. I have to wait to see what I think when they get here!

      Delete
    2. I'm a bit of a tomboy so the Nikes appealed to me. I've been waiting for a top to come along that I can wear with my J. Crew Minnies and the pocket sweater should be just the thing. I want to see your monk strap shoes now, when are they arriving??!!! :)

  13. I can't believe you resisted the "crazy pants", a true testament to your analytical wardrobe skills (is that even a thing?)
Great purchases. I know you've been wanting to try out the oxford shoe style, I think these would be cute with tights and skirts. I'm curious to see your reviews!

    1. honestly, I was drooling over the metallic mirror oxford, but the monkstrap was more reasonable...

  14. I like way too much of both J Crew and the factory roll outs. Or perhaps I really just like warm cozy fall clothes. ;)

  15. I bought monk strap loafers in cordovan from Cole Haan last winter and LOVE them. Very comfortable and the straps adjust for all kinds of socks. Happy feet are so important.
I can honestly say there is NOTHING in the J Crew rollout this time I want/need/can justify. There is a bracelet that has been out for a while, the brown pave link, that I tried and is really lovely, but my jewelry collection is out of control.
As mentioned to your in an earlier comment, I've seen more pretties at Calypso that are well made and very unique - though expensive. Yeah for a local celeb blogger event at a CSB Saturday that isn't too far from me - 20% off everything for a few hours - whee!!!

    1. I LOVED those shoes when you bought them!

I wish CSB shipped to Canada.... :-(

  16. The pale pink v-neck will look lovely on you with your porcelain skin, red hair and crimson lips. I like the patch pocket pencil skirt but I have a very similar style from Brooks Brothers, without the zippers. I don't plan to place an order this time around.
