Random Saturday Musings

Well it rained BUCKETS here last night!  Honestly, we have had so much, and such heavy, rain over the past few weeks that I am about ready to build an ark!

source

But I digress.  It is time for that weekly downloading of all that is in my head...

1) Kate Moss Lipstick

I don't talk much about makeup, at least not since my NARS makeover (I keep waiting for Francois Nars to call to make me his new middle aged spokes model), but I bought a new lipstick this week and wanted to pass along the recommendation.

My daughter is 21 and is the case when one is 21, is  a huge drugstore makeup aficionada.  I think it is often not until our 40 or 50s that we suddenly have the wherewithal AND the need for more expensive (and better quality) makeup.  She has especially become a bit of fan of the Rimmel London line.

Oh you know Rimmel London - the makeup line with the uber-cool Kate Moss as their spokes model...

My daughter has sensitive skin like myself, so when she recommends a product, I am always happy to give it a try.  Her latest recommendation was the Kate Moss lipstick, Lasting Finish Matte:

I chose 107, which is a dark berry-ish red and is the colour at the very bottom of this flower palette.

I have worn it a couple of times and it really stays and it doesn't dry out my lips, which is a surprising thing, as EVERYTHING dries out my lips!  I bought it on sale at Shoppers Drug Mart for $5.99.  I can't remember the last time I paid that little for a lipstick but I will likely buy another shade or two in this line as I like the lipstick very much.

2) and speaking of Kate Moss...

When I was googling her this morning for 1), I came across a picture of her grabbing a Big Mac:

Source
Oh damn you Kate.  At 39, you can still eat a big mac and look like this...

In a recent interview, Kate has supposedly said she always dresses "chic" and would NEVER wear sweatpants or a twinset!  I can't wait for Fred to weigh in on that one!

which got me thinking....

3) Why the hate for the twin set, Kate?

I think Kate actually slagged my beloved Christy Turlington recently for wearing twin sets.

While the photo below is not my definition of a twin set, it is hard to imagine describing Christy as anything less than spectacular in ANYTHING...

Obviously, J Crew still thinks that the twin set has legs:

But what do you think, are twin sets mumsy like Kate believes, or a classic and a nice alternative to the blazer/blouse?

4) Switzerland apologizes to Oprah

During a recent trip to Zurich, Oprah says she was mistreated, was in fact a victim of racism, when she was not treated respectfully at a luxury store when she asked to see a $38,000 Tom Ford handbag.  The store has denied the claim, citing the clerk's discomfort at showing anyone a $38,000 handbag....Oh and there was the language barrier....

WENN

Here's what I thought: it could be racism or it could just be a snotty store clerk, who if they didn't recognize Oprah, or think she was dressed well enough, was condescending.  I think we have all experienced that ourselves.  Of course, the former is awful, the latter is pathetic.

Wonder how long it will be before the City of Zurich is teaching its store clerks manners a la Paris?

And I am frankly waiting for Luxembourg to apologize to me after I was stuck in a traffic jam there in 2008...

5) Beyoncé cuts her hair

We're used to seeing Beyoncé with long hair, so when the singer debuted a super-short pixie cut this week, the world paused to take notice. But she's not the only star who's stunned the public with nothing more than a haircut -- take a look at these other stars who've gone short.

Never has so much been said about a star taking pair of scissors to their hair.  Well, at least since old Miley Cyrus cut her hair off.

I'm not going make a big deal of this.  She is a beautiful woman no matter what.  Do I like it?  Nope.  And I like a good pixie cut:

But all hair grows out and frankly, if she likes it, then that's all that matters!

What are you thinking about today?  Stay Safe out there!

Oh and PS - I see the ghostly Oprah in the preview pane, too.  Yet she doesn't appear in the HTML code.  Oh Oprah, you are everywhere, keeping an eye on all of us....

  1. 1. Kate Moss is over rated...most models are.
    2. No, I do not like a matchy twin set ( J Crews is not appealing to me) but the way Christy did it is right.
    3. I believe it was a snotty clerk not racism. Did no one see Pretty Woman?
    4. I believe she just took her wig off or weave out. All that hair would have driven me crazy too.

    1. well if we can believe Beyoncé's hair stylist, she had long hair, but I do bet a lot was weave!

  2. I love me some red lipstick. Rimmel has some good products & I am going to look for that shade. I use NARS Mascate which I hoard for fear it will be discontinued. Not a fan of Kate Moss but love Christy who is classy and lives healthy and kindly. Can't really understand snooty salespeople, a sale is a sale you know. I have a navy Jackie twinset which I love but I do prefer plain ones. It will be interesting to have a post on what will you never wear? Hope your weekend is off to a good start.

  3. Apparently Kate Moss was responsible for "heroin chic". I'd much rather wear a twinset than look like some starving drug addict, although in the bikini photo she appears to have kicked the habit and put on some healthy weight. Must be all those Big Macs.

Oprah needs to get over herself. People are snotty all the time, to everyone, for no good reason. As you say WMM, who hasn't had that experience at least once? One of my Asian friends was booted from Louis Vuitton in Paris because she was taking too long inspecting details of a very expensive bag. The clerk got quite upset and said she thought my friend was memorizing the bag to go back to China and make copies. My friend has Japanese ancestry, was born and raised in San Francisco and has zero interest in fake handbags. She didn't run out and scream racism and instead laughed it off as stupidity and a lost sale for the shop, but she hasn't shopped LV since. Is Oprah in need of some publicity?

Red lipstick is fabulous on you WMM. How nice to find one that feels as good as it looks.

    1. Fred - I think you are right on - your friend WAS the victim of racism, I think Oprah was the victim of snottiness!

    2. Vuitton's history during WWII was disgusting. They supplied the occupying army, and had a sign in their window banning entry to certain people.

  4. Kate Moss, well I would never take style advice from her anyway. Surprisingly I don't wear twinsets, something I like especially with pearls and a full skirt a la June Cleaver. I bought two from a lovely JCA but they were too small on me and I gave them to my older daughter, she wears the shells and cardigans separately.
A good lipstick is worth a lot so I'll look that up at the drug store, thanks for the tip!
I think Oprah is just used to people fainting with happiness when she comes into their shops. She probably wasn't recognized and the clerk is surely telling the truth, and why would a handbag be $38,000 anyway, what the heck was it made with?
I have a day of errands today and maybe some work in my garden, the sun is shining here so hopefully that's coming your way!

  5. I thought I was special, I was sure Oprah was sending me a message.
Nars - love his thick stubby matt lip pencils.

Kate - I've always loved her style, sometimes I do feel mumsy in my twinset so I wear it with very high hels and dragged through a hedge backwards hair.

  7. Oh my- we had a crazy storm and hail the other day, but it's actually been pretty good for PEI so far! I have always had bad luck with rain in NB though (hmmm...rolling through on Monday- I hope it clears!)

I think twinsets can be a bit too sweet, but Christy is always cool so maybe Kate was a little off the mark, and I really like the new JC ones!

  8. Love the ghostly Oprah.

I don't doubt her story for a minute, based on what I've seen and heard here in Switzerland. I'm only surprised that they didn't recognize her and thus treat her better.

  9. I love vintage style, I guess twin sets fall under that category. I don't wear them myself, but I saw a woman on the plane the other day (wearing a Jackie twin set no less) with a silk scarf and it looked so chic. So the jury's out. I don't know that I can say "So and so has no style..." since part of what makes fashion fun is definitely subjective. But, with that said, there is horrific style. Ok, you caught me in a double standard but Shhhh, don't tell! Now I can tell you that I wouldn't eat a big Mac though, and I'm sticking to my guns. Any burger that doesn't rot after being left out 30 days needs to stay as far away from me as it can.
I love makeup and also have problem skin, not to mention that like our friend Louise (from Ingredients) I am concerned with the effects of chemicals on the body. I love the Jane Iredale line. It's pricey, but most of the stuff works just as well or better than high end. I have only tried one of their lipsticks and it's a bit dry (but stays and stays) but I am going to be trying their lip stains and can report back. I want to see pictures of your glowing face with the berry lip!

    1. I am not familiar with Jane Iredale at all - will have to go look that up! I am going to take some more photos over the next few days - promise!

    2. Hi Wendy, Jane Iredale is my #1 recommendation for mineral-based makeup. There's a dedicated Canadian shopping website for Jane Iredale here: http://shop.janeiredale.ca . The free shipping minimum is very low, $25, and they ship via Canada Post Expedited service. The lipsticks are a little more dry feeling when first applied but I find that they are actually quite moisturizing and protective, esp. in winter weather. If you want to find a retailer in your area, here's the link for the Canadian distributor with the store locator search function: http://www.stogryn.ca/page.aspx?page=Jane%20Iredale&ID=10&menu=spa

  10. I always feel prim and dowdy in a twinset but why? I am appalled that a $38,000 handbag even exists. If I were buying such a thing, I don't think I'd want anyone to know. I don't know if it was racism, could have been, but it also sounds like Oprah wants some attention. Does she have a launch of something coming up?

    1. Oh Cate, you jaded soul ;-) Why yes, Oprah is touting her new movie..

  11. I think Oprah just has a bruised ego because she wasn't treated like royalty. I can't believe Kate Moss is 39! I have always thought Christy Turlington is far cooler than Kate Moss - Christy has been doing some really impressive work for the "Every Mother Counts" charity. I like the idea of twinsets, but I tried wearing one once and felt really hot from the double layer of cashmere. Now wondering if I should have scooped that JC cardigan while it was on promo with an additional 40% off...

    1. I am like you definitely not two layers of cashmere....

  12. Oh good to know about the rimmel lipstick - I love reds! I'm not too sure about twinsets... I need to ponder on those a bit more. :P

  13. This isn't the first time that Oprah has comained of racism while purse shopping.
I love Halle Berry. She is stunning and I love her style.

    1. I love Halle too, though would be happy if this marriage sticks, for her sake. As for purses, Oprah is shopping with the wrong person! She needs to take GF or xoxo, who can talk knowledgeably with the store clerk on her behalf!

    2. Hah, WMM, I won't brook any snobbery if I want to see something, especially a bag. I lost respect for Lady "O" this week. Given Tina's wedding was a bit back found her accusation very calculated.

But, I guess she is a business like anyone else celeb, and has to make sure her movie and OWN/ Lohan interview top the ratings. (Can you tell I am with cate on this one?)

    3. Oh didn't know there was a Lohan interview... ugh

  14. HAIR APPARENT Not loving Queen B's crop either, and given I wore a pixie most of my adult life that's strange. Just don't think it suits her neck, height. Maybe it's like Mobama's bangs, she's just getting used to it. Can't blame her as a mom to toddler. And like you said, gotta love your own look, all that matters.

As for twinsets, pearls and anything else very classic, I think it is in the mix, attitude and personal style of the wearer, also the hair, accessories, colour scheme...Confidence is never "mumsy" or dull.

    1. One thing I HATE and think looks dated on a lot of twinsets is the poor, unflattering neckline of the shell. Most women look better with a bit of skin (al la Christy) and colour contrast, not very high or awkward bulky cuts on top.

And adding to the Jane Iredale reco. I only have a smattering as it was product line for a spa I worked for but gentle, wears well and some good shades.

    2. GF - re: twinset - am with you - I like a vneck shell for that exact reason!

  15. I like both Kate and Christy but probably Kate the most. I am torn about twin sets but like Christy's. I sometimes feel a bit frumpy in them so I feel I have to glam them up. I just am not that crazy about cardigans and much prefer pullovers. I do like Rimmel lipstick. My favorite shade is # 066 Heather Shimmer. It's a good everyday color for me a blond with blue/green eyes and light to medium skin tone. If I go any lighter i feel like I am the same pale color from head to toe. You can't beat the price and it has a bit of shimmer.

  16. Oprah is SO OVERRATED! She comes across as being used to being fawned upon everywhere she goes. Plus, OWN is hemmorraging money on a monthly basis. Perhaps she needs to drum up some publicity for her upcoming interview with Lohan?
Also, isn't the Birkin and Kelley bag more expensive than the $38,000 Tom Ford bag? I can NEVER justify spending that kind of money on an accessory.

I love a good twin set. I own a JC Bavarian Blue twinset and wear with a floral silk driving scarf. That scarf goes with everything. Anyway, I'm a twinset fan and never thought of it as dowdy or mumsy.

Yes, Christy Turlington all the way. I never 'got' Kate Moss and her appeal if one can even call it that. Some celebrities' celebridum just goes over my head.
