Miller Time Friday - Hot Chocolate, Please

And no, I do not mean THAT Hot Chocolate, 70s wonder band and the singer of one of my all-time cheesy favourites: You Sexy Thing.

Don't you think that Gayle would be all over that suit he's wearing?  That is so awesome!

Nope, I mean the recent news out of Harvard Medical School that indicates that hot chocolate may help aging brains.

I hear you - It's August Wendy, why do we care?

Well I care about your brains, as well as my own, and soon enough, it will be September and you will be looking for a warm drink on a cool night and you might not necessarily think "My, I need a hot chocolate."  But you should think that...

After putting them on a diet of two cups of hot chocolate a day -- supplied by confectionery giant Mars -- for 30 days, scientists measured the amount of blood flow to participants’ brains as they undertook memory and cognitive tests.
Healthy blood flow plays an important role in cognitive diseases.
"As different areas of the brain need more energy to complete their tasks, they also need greater blood flow," explained lead author Farzaneh Sorond.
“This relationship, called neurovascular coupling, may play an important role in diseases such as Alzheimer's."
While there was no measurable difference in blood flow or test results among those with regular blood flow, researchers noted an 8 percent improvement in blood flow among the 18 participants who started the experiment with impaired blood flow.

So yesterday, I went out for coffee with my sister in the afternoon.  But instead of ordering a decaf coffee, I ordered a hot chocolate.  And felt quite virtuous, despite the fact that they put whipped cream on top...

old fashioned goodness - grandma knew what she was about giving us these...

Isn't that a pretty hot chocolate?

So since it is Friday, and since some of you will never drink your cocoa without a "twist", I offer:

Kahlua Java Hot Chocolate
Coffee
1½ oz Kahlua

Mix hot chocolate and coffee in equal amounts into your mug (although to be honest I have often done 1/3 coffee to 2/3 chocolate which is also very nice) then add the Kahlua and stir. Whipped cream and marshmallows is also an optional garnish if you're trying to impress.

Think of this as a medicinal drink, something to keep you sharp, something to help you keep your wits about you, literally...

Hope you have the loveliest of Friday!  Stay Safe out there!

  1. I even have a special little machine that frothes the hot chocolate. Love it. That and hot apple cider warms the bones every time. Emily had her last day of work and got whipped creamed from the staff...she felt loved and appreciated. Have a lovely day.

    2. It's by Bialetti. Received as a Christmas gift many years ago. believe you can get one from various stores...mine came from William Sonoma. Hot chocolate is quite a treat, can not imagine having it twice a day for a month.

  6. Ooh, this is lovely to hear, as I have a hot chocolate or tea every night in the the cooler weather. I just use the Keurig ones and it's quick and delicious. My brother uses the frother, and I might "need" to get one of those. Yummmm.

    1. I think I "need" a frother, too...

I usually drink apple-cinnamon herbal tea in the evening, but this may be the odd treat for me now...

  8. Hey WMM, just catching up on your week, Linda Rodin, Style Statements, Lane's happy milestone and all. I do like a Kahlua coffee, but not much on hot chocolate unless it's the Mexican, more dark and spicy vs. sweet kind.

How nice you were out with your sis. Happy weekend!

  9. When the Harvard medical School has to rely on the Mars Corporation for hot chocolate, well, then, my friends, the End is near. My blood flow went up 8% just thinking of this.
