And so to bed...

I am tired of my bedding.

I realized that I have not taken any proper pictures of my bedroom and the picture below is NOT one...

However, you can get a bit of a sense of what the current bedding looks like:

It is a pale silvery blue and is at least 6 years old and showing every one of those 6 years.  There are stains now and it is looking very worn.

So I have turned my steely gaze to finding just the right bedding for our room.  The walls, except for the one wallpapered wall shown behind me, are a peacock blue as shown below...

Things that I am taking into consideration as I purchase new bedding:

1) there is a third "person" in bed with us - our 13 year old Lhasa Apso, Indy.  In other words - must be washable and must not pull when claws walk on it.
2) we are thinking of going to a lightweight duvet and duvet cover.  Before this last bedding, that's what we used but we got sick of it.  However, I believe we got sick of it because it was a cheap duvet that had completely uneven fill.
3) I love the colour of my bedroom walls and do not plan to change it.

So I have been searching online and have identified some possibilities, but would love any thoughts/ideas/recommendations you might have!

Option 1: Pottery Barn Duvet Covers:

A paisley?

A trellis pattern?

A floral?

Some birds?

A very plain linen and silk?

Option 2: Garnet Hill and Eileen Fisher

If money and puppy claws were not an option, this little duvet from Eileen Fisher would be on my bed:

Eileen Fisher Seasonless Silk Comforter & Throw

Isn't that grey silk divine?

Maybe a washed linen in grey instead?

Eileen Fisher Washed Linen Collection

Option 3) Nordstroms

A lovely print by Tracy Porter's Poetic Wanderlust:

Poetic Wanderlust 'Ardienne' Duvet Cover

These are what I have found thus far that I like - would love any ideas you might have!

Thanks and have a great Sunday!!!!  Stay safe out there!

    1. CSW - you are so right. I love my current bedding and am not tired of the pattern - just tired of how worn it looks. I need something that will last!

  3. The trellis is my favorite of the prints, but if you can find a washed linen at a reasonable price, I highly recommend it! I found lovely neutral linen sheet sets and a duvet cover on One Kings Lane, and one new Eileen Fisher duvet cover on ebay (we need our own b/c we both steal), and they are amaaaaaazing. Get softer and softer with each wash and feel like heaven. Either gray or a fawn khaki would be beautiful and restful with your blue walls.

  4. There's a beautiful linen store in Toronto that has beautiful, quality bedding. Some are on sale right now. They'll ship to your neck of the woods. I think you'd like this one. http://www.aulitfinelinens.com/products/nicola-mist-1

    3. The website is lovely and I see they also sell xoxo's favourite linen's too!

Poor Barry - I was just showing him things I liked and he thought they were the price of a duvet cover and a duvet...

  5. I like all in option 1 except for the birds. I'm also not a fan of duvet and duvet cover. We had this combo for years and it's such a pain to put the duvet cover back on the duvet. If you don't use the corner clips, then the duvet slips around. Too much trouble! Have fun picking out something new!

    1. HI Cate - you sound like me! Barry is desperate to get one again - I am okay - but want lightweight now that I am getting hotflashes!

    2. I want lightweight so it's easy to fit into the washer/dryer. We have one horribly large down comforter that took literally 6 dryer cycles to dry, insane! I want to get rid of it, but who gets rid of perfectly good down comforters? (someone please give me permission! lol)

  6. I like the pottery barn duvet covers, I just put mine back on our bed yesterday. That trellis pattern is gorgeous. Mine is linen/cotton and very sturdy. They are also a fairly good price on sale!
It's true that wrestling with a duvet cover is a pain but I like the look when it's on the bed, tailored yet fluffy.

    1. Barry loved your bed, Dani (now doesn't THAT sound odd!). The beauty of a duvet is that you can switch our covers a couple of times a year, which is fun!

  7. I just tossed my comforter and duvet (uneven fill, too hot) and went with a white matelasse bed spread / coverlet and shams. I love the simplicity, and the bed looks instantly tidy. thecompanystore.com has some nice ones (modern or traditional). I have the "Madelyn" style. It's easy to mix and match with other blankets, shams, sheets.

    1. Hi Elizabeth - I love a matelassé too! My favourite style ever is the tufted silks by Eileen Fisher above - they make me think of being in a 1930s Carole Lombard movie!

  8. I have Eileen Fisher and Anthropologie beddings and both have held up well in the wash. I think the Trellis pattern will look best in your bedroom. I like how you are channeling Audrey H in the first picture.

  9. I like the grey floral for you since you have a visitor to bed every night...that one looks like it would take some abuse and still look gorgeous. :)

Eileen Fisher silk comforters--one day I will be able to afford something like that--wow, they look so soft and luxurious!

  11. Let me try this again with correct spelling...

Well we are in sync today, WMM. My post today, which you can see HERE, is on the summer bedding we are using and it is so comfortable. The Bella Notte linen sheets are nicer than the Eileen Fisher version IMO but the EF silk duvet cannot be beat for summer. Just put it in a duvet cover and the claws won't damage it and it's easier to keep clean as well. They really are divine. Maybe something to plan for when Garnet Hill has a % off sale.

  12. Just a thought...We have a duvet and throw a quilt over it. That way all we wash is the quilt and DO NOT have to stuff the duvet in the freakin cover every time (too much work). All your picks are lovely just look at fabric content...some of Potterybarns are not soft.

    1. Agreed - I want buttery soft. We were just saying the same thing about whatever we get - throwing a blanket on it at night for the dog....

I am a fiend for soft and smooth - so important! and from the sounds of xoxo - silk would be a great filling for summer, down for winter...

  13. Hi WMM, I would also look at the Lands End high thread count (400 cotton) bedding collections. They usually come out with new ones every September. Am also a fan of West Elm, PB and Au Lit. I like subtle patterns, and mix-match, but anything too busy gets tiresome after a while imo. White is also not bad, so long as you have non-chlorine bleach.

Understandably I am also big fan of hotel "Westin Heavenly Bed" look (check out their online shop site just for white-on-white layering ideas). That could also be a great contrast with your blue walls I think. Plus add a few pieces of Delft or Chinoiserie around.

  14. HiWMM! Long time reader, first time commenter... I have to side on the duvet cover option. We have cats with us in bed every night and it is just so easy to peel off the cover to wash instead of an entire comforter. And a silk fiber duvet is heaven! Even hubs who is perennially hot (oh ya!) prefers it for perfect temperature. For sheets we love wood fiber for its temp regulation, though I am curious to try real linen...
I'm a pattern mixer, so would trellis and paisley work together?
Love your blog! We've so much in common even though I'm way out in the middle of Alberta. Good luck!

    1. Hi Flibbertygibbit - thanks for jumping in (I think I had that nickname from my father when I was about 3 years old! great name!)

I appreciate the advice - I do like some pattern mixing as well - I think if things are in the same colour story is probably fine, don't you think? the silk fill atracts me a lot... hmmmm silk....Wood fiber sheets is indeed a really good idea for the bed. I am heading into hot flashes (sigh) and need all the breathable material I can get!!!

      Please chime in again!

  15. Wow those are all beautiful. I know I am echoing some earlier sentiments, but I would mix the trellis and Pottery Barn patterns , too. I love patterns on a bed. I have a thin quilted coverlet, and we fold a down comforter in a cotton duvet cover at the foot of our bed. I also have a matelasse spread that I use sometimes as well. I am a fan of Bellino linens- they supply to Williams Sonoma Home., and I find them to be very comfortable.

  16. I am also in the market for new bedding. After taking my comforter to the cleaners it came back in bad shape. I think the fabric had just started to deteriorate after so many years and the cleaning just finished it off. A few puppy claws later a large hole developed forcing us to use it on the reverse side which is the colorway I don't like as much. I have been looking for awhile with no luck. I have beautiful silk euro shams and a dust ruffle I would like to continue to use so I would like to find something to coordinate which makes it harder. I don't care for duvets as they are too heavy and cumbersome to deal with on a king size bed and the down is too heavy in the summer. I need find something new someday so I am loving all of the ideas.

  17. Jumping in late here, but I vote for plain linen and silk or washed linen.
I'm not a fan of patterned bed linen, although some of those prints are lovely....

  18. Sorry, with Barry here. I only have white linens, percale or linen. I find them restful as I don't want to see pattern at night. But then I am the plain one.

  19. I have mostly white or else pale blue. The kids get whatever they chose, which can be wild and wacky!

I think white would be lovely...
