Style Question Wednesday - Signature Style, Part Trois - or how do you organize your clothes?

Well, I spent three hours this morning going through all of my clothing.

What a tedious exercise!

However, in the end I had a clean closet and only clothing that was in season and which fit and which met the criteria I had set in yesterday's post:

  • a love of skinny trousers and jeans, with the very odd wide trouser
  • flat shoes or boots
  • Nothing clingy
  • clothes with little embellishments - simple, but with some personality
  • generally neutral, with the odd pop of colour or pattern

Your comments yesterday were really helpful to me in the purge process.  I ended up with three piles:
  • The giveaway to charity pile
  • the giveaway to some of my old work mates and friends pile
  • the oh-my-god-throw-that-in-the-garbage-right-now pile
Over the years, i have tried various methods to organize my small closet.  None really quite work for me, so would love some advice from you as to what you do!

Here is what is left:

I started with trousers on right.  They are followed by skirts, then dresses, then blouses and jackets mixed in, organized dark to light.  At the far left, which you are unable to see, are my two summer suits and my fancy pants.  Up above, I have organized sweaters and tees by colour.  There is still a lot here, even after pulling a LOT out.

One thing that struck me in the end is that
  • there is hardly anything "trendy" left.
  • There are only a few skirts:
    •  two JC pencil skirts
    • 2 JC comfy skirts (white linen drawstring and striped sweatshirt material)
    • one max studio flowy skirt is bright coral
    • one Gap Body pale grey maxi skirt (which I had forgotten about but which is much nicer than the JC skirt I bought last summer..)
  • I have more than enough pants
  • I have about 6 blouses, which is fine for summer
  • I have plenty of cardigans and tshirts
  • I have 4 summerweight jackets/blazers
  • I have 5 pairs of shorts, including a gorgeous black dressy pair from Michael Kors which I had forgotten I had and which I HAVE NEVER WORN (hangs head in shame)
All in all, a more than adequate summer wardrobe!

I wish my shoes and scarves could fit into this closet, but Barry doesn't want to seem to leave it!  Ideally, I would like even fewer articles of clothing, but this is a work in progress!  All of the items that made the cut are cotton, silk or summerweight cashmere.  Wait - I lied - there is a lovely Michael Kors dress that is a turquoise poly-cotton blend which I love!  I am not positive that every single thing is as ideally flattering as it could be, but it is getting there!  Nothing boxy left at all!

I have always dreamed of a walk-in closet:

Aerin Lauder's would be nice:

Oh gosh, even this would be nice if I didn't have to share (does anyone have this few shoes and if yes, can you get me into a 12 step program so I can do that, too?):

But alas, I do have to share...Barry built the shelves up above the hanging rack.  We have another closet in the very back room that stores winter coats and seasonal overflow things and Barry's suits.

I would love closet organization ideas for this small space!  All ideas gratefully accepted!

I will be honest, I was very sad to let so much go, but it was freeing at the same time.  As well, it was frustrating to see some of the mistakes and the money spent on those mistakes...

I am now looking for a slightly upscale version of J Crew to try that meets some of my needs.  JC is fine for some basics, but even trying on my pencil skirts, I was shocked by the fit differential between three size 6s and three size 8s!

I am also hopeful that a local retailer will pick up the Nougat London line her in town.  Right now, the only line I see that also fits my taste is Tory Burch, but that is a hard one for me as there is no shop closer than Boston and the shipping/duty is brutal.  Any ideas would be appreciated!  I won't be looking for anything else for summer, but I anticipate doing this again in fall and having even less!

Thanks!  and stay safe out there!

  1. must be the end of the long dreary winter - finally! Today I did scarves and pjs. The winter pjs fit nicely in an underbed storage box. The scarves have requested their own apartment. I think they're jealous of the shoes. I am not a good person to ask about closet organization, it's one of those concepts that's honored more in the breach.

    1. okay - you made me laugh! I threw out my winter pjs at the end of the season, so that will be on the list for this fall! scarves seem to multiply like rabbits!!!

  2. I edited my closet briefly only bc I am packing but I have such a bipolar closet that I just accept it for what it is but when I move back in I need to organise the shelves so I can see it. I think the storage unit is key...but yours looks so organised and even color coded!

  3. Oh how I wish I lived next door, short term only (I'd miss my southern weather) I would organize your closet for you. Double rods would be a start. Do you use the back of your doors? Also any wall space? If you have never been to The Container Store website (I LOVE this store) they fantastic ideas and planning tools. Oh I could go on...I go apeshit for this stuff.

    1. Ha! The doors are bifold, so the only back of the door we have access to is our bedroom door where we hang bathrobes and where Barry's ties and belts are hanging. No wall space nearby (is a small bedroom). I will go check out the container store website - we don't have a lot of container options around here - just home depot stuff! The issue that I find really hard is sharing with Barry!

  4. Get Barry to change out those doors pronto! He's handy, not expensive (I hate bifolds)and the stuff you could do with the backs...oh my. The Container Store will give you ideas that you should be able to implement with Home Depot, Target, or what you have around your house.

    1. Well wish me luck! Not sure he will go for it, as his side would open right on to the open bedroom door!!

  5. Well by now you should know what to do to get what you want/need...blush...blush. While you are at it get him to do double rods for part of closet, definitely would cut the actual square footage you would need to a lot for him (don't tell him that part). Have fun with it today, I have to work.

  6. Love your organization job! I've consigned a lot this season and get pleasant little checks in the mail. Did you keep a maybe pile that you can take back if you want? Are your folded things organized by type as well? I have a pile of V-necks and one of crews, short v. long sleeves. I have some nice hooks that I hang things I don't need to wash yet. We have a walk in but I share with MLane.

    1. Lane - I am off to get my hair cut and have a little cheque waiting for me at the consignment shop. Sadly, we don't have a lot of high end shops around here and consignment doesn't yield much...

Hmm - I did mine by colour, not style... will have to rethink that...

    2. here's how:
=stack of crewnecks, SS, black at bottom. white at top.
=stack of v-necks, SS, black at bottom, white at top.
=stack of crewnecks, LS, black at bottom, etc.
      etc
      etc

other colors go (duh) between the black and the white in reverse ROYGBIV order. This makes sure the dark purples and navies are not next to the blacks.

stripes: same principal. Organize by color of deepest color stripe.

      you're welcome.

  7. I share the closet with my husband too, and he may have more clothes than I do! I try to keep a well curated wardrobe andcategorize items by type, and color code them. We have a small closet and seem to manage with a low profile shoe rack at the bottom, hang most of our clothes and keep some stuff in a dresser. I would love to organize your closet, I love emptying drawers and rearranging the contents! Now, you didn't get rid of my favorite JC polka dot tie nck blouse, did you? I thought I had a seriously compelling argument for its defense :) your closet looks lovely and organized, so it looks as if you could give advice rather than take it!

    1. Anthro Blogger - you are too funny! Nope - the tie blouse and other other one are still here, though the tie blouse won;t be hauled out again till fall! I did a good purge last spring before I put things away. I wish you would come organize for me - you and Blue Booby could take it in hand and I would sit on the bed and drink wine!

    2. Gladly! I spent my childhood separating my pencils by color and alphabetizing my books, little did I know that what I thought a game is called library science in the adult world :) I worked some years as an archivist and librarian, but I think I rather do closet edits. And I'm affordable, you can pay me in biscuits :)

  8. Nice job Wendy. I have no advice as I share a closet with my h and he takes up exactly half of it. I store my shoes in their boxes in the basement and bring up some seasonal shoes into our coat closet where we have a shoe rack. I would love to have a beautiful closet room with natural daylight.
You are making such great progress with all of your goals! Love watching it happen!

  9. Wow, you really got the bug yesterday!

I share a medium-sized wardrobe with my husband, and we each have two drawers of a dresser. Our spaces are clearly delineated as the wardrobe has a "wall" in it. I have the bigger side of the wardrobe. I also bought a small wardrobe for the guest room, where I keep my off season clothing.

I also have a medley of underbed boxes. One has things that maybe possibly I might wear if maybe possibly I get pregnant (oh I'm so superstitious) - basically clothes that are too big right now. Another box is full of things to donate, which, ridiculous as it sounds, I bring to Toronto with me when I go. I always check a bag and buy a lot there or take home random things from my childhood bedroom, so it is not a big deal to bring extra over. My sister gets her pick, and then I donate the rest to my favourite charity.

My weight has been fluctuating a lot for a variety of reasons, so I also keep most of whatever doesn't currently fit in the 2nd wardrobe.

All that said, I try to keep the main wardrobe decently sparse so that organization is less of an issue. The bar is too high and that makes me crazy, but it's just an Ikea wardrobe and not possible to move the bar, so I deal. My dear husband installed lights that go on when I open the door, which is so amazing.

I use those Ikea skubb boxes on the low shelf of my wardrobe - I prop them up on their sides and stack folded things in them. That really helped with tidiness. I organize by item type, not colour. It's an pretty good system, but I still constantly forget about things.

Okay, that was probably too much info! I do recommend keeping a list, that has helped me a lot.

    1. as a superstitious person myself, I have your back!!!

This was great advice! I think your system is a lot like Lane's and I may want to think about organizing the folded stuff by item type, not colour...

    2. I am glad it was useful!

Thanks for the superstition support. It's not even on the table at the moment, but one must maintain the superstition for the if/when :)

  10. Hi Wendy, you did a nice job with your closet. Turns out my husband has 3 closets! He has a small one in our bedroom for his jackets, his uniforms are in his study and he has a large closet in the spare room for his shirts and trousers - and no, he is not a clothes horse, far from it! (He obviously just never throws anything out!) I have a small walk-in closet in our bedroom plus a couple of dresser drawers. I do need to purge a bit, mainly t-shirts etc in the drawers, but overall I have enough space. I am definitely one of those people who wears 20% of their wardrobe 80% of the time.

    1. Oh me too! I so wish I wore 80% 20% of the time.. Your husband sounds like me might benefit from a purge! We could do his closet, too!

    2. Well Wendy, I don't know if that would be appreciated - he is very proud of the longevity of some of his flannel shirts!

  11. wendy i think the closet looks great as is. there is no perfection when it comes to closets b/c our clothes are forever flowing in and out of our lives. what kills me is that our previous home had 2 beautiful closets that were all kitted out in custom features and i took it for granted. it was never full and i didn't think it'd be a problem in a small house. boy was i wrong! i think i miss that closet more than anything from my past *larger* life. so it goes...right?

  13. It looks like you have room under the blouses for shoes or boots or a container w/ drawers for scarves. My closet is also shared w/ hubby and we have bi-fold doors-I need to see as much as possible and can't deal w/ dark corners. I have a shelf under my hanging blouses and jackets where I stash workout wear and sweatshirts worn to baseball games. Shoes are in clear boxes stacked on the floor plus I have a 12 cubby open cabinet. Everything does not fit in my closet so dressy stuff, out of season and to be purged is in a smaller hallway closet.
I categorize and colorize like you do.
I hope you find the perfect solution.

  14. I really like those white shelves that sit above your hanging clothes. Did you say Barry made those for you? They seem just right for stacking t-shirts. My t-shirts are hanging and taking up too much room, and I'd like to stack them on shelves like that (per WFF's method, I like that!).

I will not give closet advice because mine is in dire straits. I am glad to read everyone's ideas for you, they are helpful. What I need more than anything is uninterrupted time to purge the stuff.

    1. Hey Cate - they are those shoe shelf things and barry adjusted them to stack and fit up above. I just implement the WFF system and it could change my life!! Oh the purging is painful! I have one thing I am still on the fence about...

  15. Good for you for getting rid of everything that doesn't suit your new life! (I wish I could be as tough!) Have you tried Ikea? My husband designed a really good closet for us from the Antonius shelving system. Perhaps you could do with a double rail, one for tops, and one for skirts and pants? Whatever the case, your closet looks very well organized!

You are inspiring me to do a major purge as well!!

    1. HI Louise - I kept going and found that using WFF's system, as opposed to colour, I was able to move my jeans and skinny pants up there as well, freeing up more closet space! Now I need to go buy something for my scarves and belts for down below the blouses and jackets as per Julie's suggestion!

  17. Congrats on taking the plunge! I did that a few years back and was the best thing!

In my old house I had a closet redone with shelves in the middle (about 2 feet wide and 1 foot tall each compartment). On the left I had a hanging rod installed higher up for long garments, and on the right side I had 1 rod higher up for blouses and tops and 1 rod beneath for skirts and pants. Shoes were kept in their boxes on the bottom of the closet. I still had a dresser with drawers for undergarments and accessories, though, but I found this closet layout worked best for me. It was even better than the current one which has been installed by the developer and which is bigger.

WMM, Blogger ate my post, so I am just going to relate that my favorite closet advice came from Anne of (I don't recall) Green Gables?Avonlea when she was told to switch her clothes to a different direction because of the sunlight. I actually think of that from time to time when I see pictures of closets with big windows.
