Random Saturday Musings

Can you believe it is already Saturday?

It has been a busy week Chez WMM - LOTS of yardwork and pruning and digging (yesterday I went womano-a-womano with Virginia Creeper and won the battle, but likely not the war!) and we have a busy weekend planned as well.  But it is Saturday and you know what that means: musings, musings, musings...

1) Linen.

I got all in a dither of happiness thinking about linen after our Miss Dani did a wonderful post about linen here.  Dani has such great taste.  However, I snorted when I read this quote: I love linen for summer but not the fancy sort.  Forget about trying to wear linen suits or trousers, you'll end up a rumpled mess.

I laughed because I was wearing fancy linen trousers at that very moment, recreating another of my style looks, so I rushed to the bathroom with my camera (really - WHO does this besides bloggers? - and took a picture as I was thinking "am I a rumpled mess?" )

Here was the original picture that had precipitated my outfit:

Ines de la Fressange

My eyesight is bad, and I suspect that Ines' pants are not linen.  But I had linen trousers and decided I should try a similar look:

These are old ivory linen trousers from JCrew from a couple of years ago.  I had to wear a cardigan because of how cool it was in the morning and I forgot to run and take a picture of myself  holding my market bag!  Took a close-up:

Yup - kind of rumpled.  Luckily for me, I am blithely impervious to the worry of looking rumply, because I kind of look rumply a lot!  Thought you might like a look at the little espadrilles from Franco Sarto that I found downtown this week for a song and which are soooo cute!

And how they appear on the zappos website:

Franco Sarto - Whip

comfy, comfy (there is a padded insole) and fun, fun, fun, with the animal print and cheeky sequins. You  can find yours here.

I have decided that a woman like myself can afford to be rumply, since it implies a certain je ne sais quoi!  But I could be delusional!  What do you think?

2) Iron Man 3

Oh I have a dreadful crush on Robert Downey Jr., speaking of cheeky.

I imagine sometime in the next couple of weeks, Barry and I will make our way to the local movie theatre and take part in the beginning of the summer blockbuster season.  I like the Iron Man series okay, though I must confess, I enjoyed The Avengers movie, with all of those lovely men together, a little more..No matter.  On Thursday evening, my daughter and I went to the mall so that i could order my new glasses.  The lineup for the midnight showing of Iron Man 3 was long and 95% comprised of young men under the age of 25.  It was like a midnight showing of Twilight, but in reverse.  One fellow was wearing a black cape (I wondered if he was confused and thought he was in a Harry Potter lineup?).  When I saw this fellow - hanging out with his friends - I had a thought: I know that bullying is terrible and pervasive.  But in 2013 where I live, you can wear a cape to a movie premiere and not get harassed.  If we went back to 1973 and where I grew up, that would not have been the case.  So I saluted this chap in my head and the others in the line and in the mall, who all seemed to think it was neat that he was wearing his cape.

3) What are YOU doing with YOUR life?

Sometimes, I read stories about what scientists are up to and I think: "Huh, Wendy you have got to get going!"  This week, scientists created the worlds smallest movie, manipulating atoms to tell a story.  You can see the movie here.  These particular scientists want to show how far the technology has come and show the capability that IBM has to store data.  I could tell you more, but honestly, the BBC article does a much better job than I would!

The funny thing was: I wasn't all that excited.  The film reminded me of the old Pac Man games and was a little dull.  We are getting so immune to the wonders of science; it is moving at a dizzying pace, but at the same time, we think that so many of the discoveries already exist anyway, because we watch movies like Iron Man 3!

Were you wowed by the movie?

4) Every time I think I'm out, the Crew pulls me back in...

I had checked the Crew site a couple of times this week for something very sedate and classic to pick up in the 30% off sale.  But then I saw these:

Café capri in silk foulard - Café Capri - J.Crew

The Cafe Capris in silk foulard in the pattern Anastasia's Flowers.  Would any of you know what THAT name would refer to?  Anywho, they popped onto the site in my size on sale.  I said "no Wendy - where the hell would you where those? " and let them go.  And felt badly that I let them go.  And then, dammit, they popped back a couple of days later in my size again.  It is like Mickey was calling to me: "Wendy, I kept these pants aside just for you...."  And yes I ordered them.  I have comforted myself that they are not final sale and therefore can be returned.  What have we learned from this?

1) Wendy bad
2) Wendy should NOT visit the sale site, even if she is innocently looking for tshirts  (is there really any innocence involved in on-line shopping?)
3) Wendy is destined to live a life of cocktail parties, champagne, etc, because if not, why am I drawn to these pants, like a moth to a shiny, sparkly flame?

You know I will share when they arrive.  And no, the sale is no justification.  Sigh.  But they remind me of what Marie Antoinette would wear if she was running around today and made me think of the wonderful, visually stunning Sofia Coppola movie.

Yes, that will be me, world-weary in my fancy pants.  Tiffany Rose, come visit, ASAP!!!  I will need company!

So leopard print sequin espadrilles and Marie Antoinette-esque fancy pants.  I am starting to see a pattern.....

Have a wonderful Saturday!!!  Stay safe out there!

  1. Wendy, you made me laugh out loud with your lessons. Wendy BAD! :)
I actually think those pants are going to look delightful on you, and you can probably dress them down with some flats and a white button down/jean jacket or chambray. I reserve all judgment until we can assess the shine factor. I have been shopping much less with my hectic schedule, but today I placed an order for some things my husband needs and refuses to buy. Something for me may also have gotten embroiled in the whole transaction. Oops.

    1. Oh, and linen? Way too rumply on me. Some women wear it brilliantly. I am not one of those women :)

    2. I hate it when those things drop in accidentally...

I am concerned about shine factor, too - we shall see... as for rumply, some days I feel like Columbo...

  2. Dying of laughter, Liberace! Thanks for a lovely and happy start to my morning WMM!

  3. I luff those pants. They were meant for you and the life you deserve: champagne, George, flowers etc etc!
Your linen trousers are excellent! I think that kind of rumpling is just fine, I was thinking of a linen suit I bought from JCrew a few years ago that I finally got rid of, I'd try to wear it out to dressy events and it would get rumply but I was trying to be fancy, see, so it didn't work. Linen worn casually embracing any rumpliness is perfect!
The CBC lady gave Iron Man 3 a rave review, I cannot wait to see it! RD Jr is such a scamp, those twinkly eyes... too bad GP is in the movie, she really has jumped the shark on herself!

    1. I hear you on Gwyneth, though I must confess and say i have asked for her new cookbook for mother's day. I loved the first one - everything we cook from it is wonderful. I think she is just over-exposed right now. She is falling, like old Anne Hatheway, only to rise again in some future day!

  4. i love rumply linen also. but you can have it.

love the j. crew pants that you succumbed to. but you can have them.

    but you leave rdj alone!

    :)

  5. I'm not going to be any help, I love those cafe capri pants for you (or me! lol). I like your linen too. J. Crew won me over this year with their linen tees and I like their linen button-ups. I've ordered their Cafe Capri pants in herringbone linen this year but I am not sure about them. They look good right out of the box and they feel great. I just don't know if the wrinkling is going to annoy me. The price wasn't bad on sale so I think I will keep a pair and give them a try. I like the fun espadrilles with the neutral linen outfit!

    1. I have another JC pair from a couple of years ago - the paley pant in flax and those I really struggle with the rumply factor. But they are so cool for summer days!

  6. I had a good laugh when i read your post:)
Hopefully the pants will be perfect for you and they will be keepers!

To make you feel better i placed an order with the 30& too(swimsuit and cover up for italy) and gave my husband a shopping list to buy for me while in the US.Plus i am expecting a pre ordered striped tee. Ina bad!!!

    1. Ina - come sit over here with me and we can be in the corner together!! I also ordered a lands end bathing suit yesterday - mine from last summer was a mess (I think the cholorine chews through them, no matter how gingerly I care for them10

    2. You two in the Crewlade naughty corner, howling. Of course, you'd probably have to detour to JC first for matching dunce's cap "sun hats".

    3. Haha the Crewlade naughty corner! I'm slinking to the corner with y'all...

    4. The Crewlade naughty corner got me! When I stop laughing at the image of those matching sun hats, I'll join you all there.

  7. 1. Aw linen, it really is a love hate relationship. I am in love once again. I ordered another pair, that I got last year, from eBay so I could have both a long to wear with wedges and a short to wear with flats. Love em.
    2. Not a fan of Iron Man. I find Tony Stark annoying. I do, however, like RJP and feel his acting abilities are being squandered with this series.
    3. We take science and medicine for granted. Modern miracles...you getting new glasses to see is a simple example.
    4. Reading Wall Street Journal and there is an article about personal shoppers. The grand dame Betty Halbreich from Bergdorf Goodman has an old book called Secrets of a Fashion Therapist and a new documentary which should be fun. Anyway, somewhere in the article it states you should wear the clothes you love and quit saving them for that special event. So if you end up loving your new pants...throw on a white tee, flat sandals, and a big tote bag and take them to the grocery store.

    2. BB - I prefer the Sherlock Holmes series myself, but he does entertain, no matter the movie, doesn't he? I will have to go check out about the personal shopper - that sounds interesting! i have been sort of doing what you say above, because frankly, working from home means i only have a few outings a week and I do need to wear the clothes i have, so I do dress up a bit (like the other day for the dog clipping!) Have a wonderful day - I think your son arrives today?

  8. Dear Love Child of Madame Déficit and That Bedazzled Highest Paid Entertainer of the '70s. So you temporarily lost your head. As Anthro Blogger says, if they don't gleam you can probably dress 'em down. And if they aren't fab you won't be keeping 'em.

Cute espadrilles. Good Ines channel (just need your bag and the shades). And mwah RDJ. He and Drew B. give me hope for all the celebrities stuck in the rehab cycle. Talk about going from unhireable wreck to total power player. And keeping his cheek!

  10. When I saw those silk foulard pants on the JC website, I immediately thought of you, so I am not surprised you ordered them. At least they are not final sale! I have been very wary of buying anything final sale. I have been stuck with way too many duds! The sequined leopard espadrilles are so cute!

Hope you have a great weekend!

  11. I wasn't sure what fancy linen meant until this morning, when perusing the JCrew website at 6.30 am (extremely dangerous activity, especially with FS gone) I saw this Collection white linen dress with cutout in the back. Beautiful if you plan on going to a party and not sit the entire evening.
The look of rumpled linen pants doesn't bother me at all, in fact the more rumpled the more I love them (love your outfit).
I had a pair of caramel linen pants when I lived in Paris that I wore to the point of getting a big hole (from fabric worn out, not seams splitting a la Crew) on my derriere. I was so sad to let them go. I have a couple of linen pants from Theory that are old as well but I still wear (Theory has the best summer linen pants IMO).
I love the new fancy, bad Wendy. Marie Antoinette would totally wear those in present day Versailles.
Not a fan of Iron Man (or any superhero movie) but a big fan of RDJ. He is like wine, gets better with age.

  12. I've been following Oscar Wilde when it comes to Crew: "The best way to get rid of temptation is to yield to it...". I reckon the $8.95 return shipping is a lower price to pay for shopping mistakes. At least I would stop checking that damn item on the website. Swoop top in punk floral, I'm looking at you. I was sucked into the hype and it's going back. Looking forward to your verdict on the foulard capris. I think it can go either way. Would you believe I have not even seen Iron Man 1? Tonight we're seeing Matilda in Broadway and I can't wait.

    1. oh Marie - am excited for you - i know it has gotten good reviews and was nominated for a bunch of tonys last week.

i knew the top would not work on me i have two blouses for last winter to get rid of to support that! That's why I love shabby apple (though have not ordered from them) - I love that they basically say - this is a good dress if you have big boobs, etc!

  14. Oh yes RDJ is one handsome fellow. I suspect more women would watch the IronMan series if he spent more time out of that ridiculous iron suit so we could actually see him in the flesh. The movie makers are missing a market here!

How nice that you can wear linen already. Spring is finally here, isn't it? I'm cleaning garden beds today in long sleeves and long pants with a pair of Hunter wellies and work gloves. So nice to be out without a jacket for a change.

  15. Hello sunshine (oh, I just realized that is a promo code, and that's not what I mean but you know what I mean). Like I said on Dani's blog, there are times when I don't mind looking like I slept in my clothes and other times when I say no more linen. As I have a more and more relaxed view about clothing, I don't mind a few rumples now.

OK, here's what I say to myself when Mickey tries to whisper, and it doesn't always work: let's see if the fabric ingredients are natural and wonderful and let's see if the pattern would be a challenge for lining up across seams (because it drives me crazy when they don't). Even if it passes these tests or I decide to overlook a criteria, I think, on an occasion where I would wear these, would I rather wear something else like it already in my closet? In this case, perhaps your lucky pants? Oh my, I am being so smart commenting here when I cannot follow my own advice. But you know what I mean and it is well.

LOL, that will be me too: leopard print, sequins and fancy pants. Yay sisterhood!

I'm blaming it on Ema as she reviewed them in late January and the image got stuck in my brain. Twice this week they popped back and this morning I couldn't resist.Did the same self talk . We should have a crazy pant party.

  17. I don't mind a bit of linen rumply-ness myself, give an air of louche Je ne sais quoi.... And I love your white linen outfit. You had me snorting at your lessons! I stalk that damn site like some crazy obsessive and if truth be told, I don't really like much of the summer stuff. Truly bizarre the need to go and check it all the time!
I think those pants are fab, and I hope you love them when they arrive.
I have no idea this Iron Man is, but we went to see 'The Hunt' on Friday night and it's one of the best films I've seen in ages. Mads Mikkelson is excellent in it (and gorgeous as well!). It's a dark film, but well worth watching imo
