Mrs. Dress-Up!

I am loving dresses this fall and have bought 3.  I would love one from J Crew, but I am nervous about the Jules and I find the fitted dresses they are making these days too difficult for me - the waists are too high for some reason.

In 2 weeks, we will be celebrating my husband's 50th birthday.  In honour of the big event, which involves going away overnight with 4 other couples and eating at a very swanky restaurant, I have bought a dress.

The dress is by Nougat London and I really love it.  It it a champagne sheath, covered by a tulle and embroidery swing dress.

When I wear it I will be wearing opaque black tights, but I was doing this on a sunday night and feeling too lazy!

.

I love this and I plan to wear a lovely faux fur stole with it if it is cold that evening!  If you would like one, visit here

While in the same shop, I  came across this lovely pink tartan dress.  It has a navy cardigan top in merino and a black swishy skirt with pockets (oh how i love pockets!)  Worn with a black blazer it is all business.  Worn with sparkly shoes, it is a party dress, too!

Again, no hose, but there will be when I wear it!!

I am really starting to love dresses - so much simpler than putting together ensembles... Does that make me lazy???

How about you - do you like to play dress-up!

  1. I like the simplicity of wearing dresses, but can't find many that fit me well.

Happy birthday to your hubs! The dress is lovely. I like Nougat stuff too, just can't find many pieces around these parts.

  2. Wolf whistling! You look beautiful.

I love dresses but own only a few, I would love to build them into my wardrobe more and I'll try to next year but I've been trying to rebuild my clothes from ground up so I've been buying mostly boring things but yes, by the end of next year I'd like a few more wearable everyday dresses cooing to me,

    1. I like the idea of clothese "cooing" to me - somedays they seems to yell, other days, they just turn their faces away and taunt me!

    1. Me too Ina! I keep looking at the cashmere but not sure about it. I also love love love the new collection shift dress in car coat material but it is a bloody $694! even at 25% off, that is crazy unless it is amazing (I can't tell if it is or isn't on the website!)

    2. WMM I saw that new dress in the red tweed, love it. I remember it from the preview, but doyamind on the price! Oh well, it will go to sale, and it is quite like my carriage coat dress from last year, only the winter version. I'm going to try to stop looking at it!

    3. I saw it in store and it is VERY THICK. Will look good on you Dani because you are so thin but I am afraid will add pounds to most ladies (including myself).

    4. Oh ema, if it adds pounds to you, i am doomed! Was it pretty?

  4. Okay your new dresses are gorgeous! They are so pretty on you! This birthday celebration is going to be wonderful, you must be so excited. Where did you find the Pink Tartan dress? I've only ever seen that brand when I'm shopping in Toronto, our small Bay out here in the sticks doesn't have anything designer.
As you know I wear dresses all the time, right now my Eileen Fisher dresses during the day with layers of Brora on top, then on weekends I pull out the fancier frocks.

    1. I got it at our local shop - it is so comfortable! I bet if you checked the website (I don't see the actual dress on it) they could direct you to a place to purchase. It is so comfy and elegant all at the same time. I can check on the style #

    2. Right Dani, time to add their Yorkville flagship to your city visit list, although is usually more separates than dresses in-store until resort wear. I know there is a women's store fairly close to you that carries, will find name. Also, you can shop on-sale via Sak's or Neiman's online and ship back (GST I know, but Pink Tartan is seldom discounted here in Canada, regularly in US.) Finally, I have also seen dresses pop up on http://www.eluxe.ca/

  5. Dresses are why I stopped buying pencil skirts. When I have to dress up, I almost always want a dress, it's just easier. I am going to try J Crew's Emmaleigh dress with this 25% off sale. I don't think J Crew has anything like the gorgeous Nougat London dress you got, that's fabulous. I like the second one too, although it is hard to see detail in the picture (I can't find the pink, is "pink tartan" a brand?). You're going to have such a fun trip!

    1. Cate, Pink Tartan is a Canadian "designer" brand that is starting to make inroads internationally > http://pinktartan.com/ You can get it through Sak's in the US. Aside from "classic with a twist" frocks, they are a big deal up here as she is half of our major fashion power couple along with Joe Mimram, founder of Club Monaco and now of Joe Fresh fame.

    2. DRESS FOR SUCCESS Morning WMM, a little slow off the mark today since post my election stay-up last night went to midnight preview of Skyfall. (Lots of promos for Les Mis, will you go on Xmas night debut?) Until I met Mz. Dani online a few years ago, I almost always did tops and and dressy trousers or if necessary skirts, since there is a considerable disparity between my top-bottom bits, plus I OD'd on bridesmaid and going-to-wedding dresses for a decade. Frocks were passed up since always mean taking in, hemming etc. (don't think I have ever had one off rack??) Happy to report have found Frock Philosophy and a brill tailor in my neighbourhood. Now reformed, with a full compliment from JC, Brora and even a cute Smythe coat dress found on super-sale (I am sure the Holts Last Call ticket was a mistake.) Now I just need friends that "dress" up more often. Doing an Anne Shirley sigh of rapture at how lovely you look in that first piccie - Barry is a lucky guy!

    4. Whoops! I am using BB and had technical difficulties, but I think GF did a better job of describing! I will try and get a better shot of the second dress - it is very elegant and simple - flirty skirt, but with a black blazer looks simple and less party-y (my new word of day)

    5. Thanks GetFresh, this explains why I don't see anything pink in that photo lol! I will keep an eye out for the brand, it looks very nice.

  6. BTW, in my slightly bleary-eyed and happily addled state, based on title I was expecting a collection of vivid cardigans, not gorgeous milestone dresses. IMOO that frock is begging for a small gleamy or velvet bag a/o some subtly dazzling earrings (party sparklers). Will you do the diamonds or other?

  7. I LOVE the dress that you picked up to celebrate your husband's 50th bday. It is so flattering on you and it is very chic (even without thights).
As ina I am much more of a summer dresses person than a winter dresses person. I have exactly two winter knit dresses (not counting party frocks) and a cashmere tunic-dress (I would love to get more of these but they re not easy to find). I am challanged in the thights/stocking department so even if it is technically easy to just slip on a dress, I can spend hours looking for a pair of thights in my messy drawer. That's why I wear mostly pants ;-).

  8. GF - ordered the Anna Karenina chandeliers from BR which are art deco and will look divine with the first dress. I see my diamonds with the second. I am balancing tasteful dresses with purple crazy pants, which are divine!!!!!

  9. Ema - you made me laugh - you always look so put together - cannot imagine you have messy tight drawer!!!!

There is one more knit dress by nougat that i may go back for - it is so lovely

  10. So feminine and looks gorgeous on you. What a special dress for the Mister's 50th. I also love dresses and that's because of Dani's . I didn't wear them except for special occasions but after reading her blog I did a 360.
Can't wait to see the new crazy pants.

  11. I know! Dani could send snow to eskimos because she always looks so amazing in everything!

  12. The chandeliers with the black stones? If that's case we have same bauble en route and can play dress up together (although mine is plain Evie JC dress.) I had to have them given 30% off and a gift cert. leftover - sparkle guilt-free.

  13. Oh WMM...you look absolutely gorgeous in your new dresses! The one you chose to celebrate your hubby's 50th is perfection! I love the idea of it paired with the chandelier earrings, too. You are going to be quite the knockout for his special event!

I also love dresses and wear them most of the time. I do have more dresses for the spring and summertime though, so I have been on the lookout for a couple more to add to my fall/winter wardrobe this year.

I like a lot of from Pink Tartan, and almost bought one of their dresses at Saks Fifth Avenue earlier this year. I ended up not getting it, and have been regretting that decision ever since.

  15. Hi WMM, I'm late to commenting today, have to clear my head of the paint fumes from decorating our bedroom! You look lovely in your dresses - the Nougat dress will be perfect for your hubby's birthday, and the Pink Tartan is so chic, very French in navy and black. I'm another one who has been influenced by Dani - I have more dresses since I started reading her blog than I've ever had before in my life!

    2. Oh and Ps Patricia - do tell about the decorating - I love decorating!

    3. Well, so far just painting. It's a grey which looks blue depending on lighting some parts of the room. Then we'll finally put up the curtains, a floral from Ikea, in blue and grey. The rest of the decorating will really just comprise of a good de-cluttering, plus hanging some artwork. Since we know we only have 2 more years left in this house, I am basically getting it ready for sale, room-by-room.
