J Crew Brogues

Well Lordy Lordy, another package arrived late yesterday with a little something-something from J Crew that I have decided to keep (I am now officially talking like Miss Maudie in To Kill A Mockingbird - go right over to the book club meeting at Dani's today and put in your two cents!)

Oh J Crew, you crazy kid, every time I think I'm out you pull me back in.... (Now I'm talking like Al Pacino).  I wish I knew how to quit you...Cue Heath Ledger...

I love a men's-style (man's style? Which is grammatically correct?) shoe.

Well, whatever, I love them because I have flat feet.  I no longer wear heels above 2".    I admire the sexy height of a heel on others.  Myself, I must derive all of my sexiness from an over-abundance of panache and a keen mind for the kind of useless information that makes one a Jeopardy! champion but serves no other real purpose in the real world.  Still, I soldier on.

So anyhow, as you know, I ordered the Women's Wing Tip Oxfords:

Wing tip oxfords

I was slightly nervous, since the monk's strap oxfords I'd ordered last fall were a dud.  But not these.  Oh, no, not these.

I pulled them out of the box just as I was enjoying a St-Germain cocktail.

The Official Cocktail of Wendy and Dani's Shenanigans (oh wait till the disco balls come out!)

They looked good through the gauzy glow of a genteel potable, and I am happy to report that in the cold light of day, they continue to wow!

Note the fancy-schmancy tying.  I will need a lesson in that...

The fresh cream is just that, but more like if you added a teaspoon of vanilla to your cream.  There is a science to colour and you can tell that it is not a science that I understand!

A side view.

Beside the seersucker eyelet dress:

Now really?  How cute is that going to be?  Cute I say!

Beside last summer's schoolboy blazer in ecru
I ran around and put these shoes beside every article of clothing in my closet, cooing with delight, but I spare you those photos...

And with today's outfit

I wanted to post on this ASAP as they are still on promo, plus 30% off that price) for anyone who might be interested.  I plan to wear these with trousers, jeans, capris, skirts and dresses.  I don't have a ton of any of those things, but these shoes are sure to be workhorses in my closet!

Really, I ought to send a note to Mickey and encourage him to keep this up!  Quality Mr. Drexler, that is the key, old chap...

Have a rousing Saturday!  I am off to make a Pavlova in honour of Miss Jody's birthday and because my friend Martine is coming over!

Stay Safe Out There!

  1. Menswear is so not me, but I love how that luscious vanilla cream color feminizes the shoe and looks lovely on you. Especially cute with the boyfriend jeans.

    1. Thanks Hex! I agree - the colour makes them almost Tom Wolfe-ish! I need a Panama Hat!

  2. P.S. Speaking of Pavlova, I tried Martha's Eton Mess recipe last night, which calls for crumbled store-bought meringue cookies. Loved it, as I can never get my homemade meringues to turn out well.

  3. LOVE. I had a pair of white perforated oxfords ( the original Joan and David) in the 80's that I wore with everything. YOu will get so much use out of them, and they are so much cuter IMO than the monk strap shoes. And, now I want that seersucker dress. How does it fit. I am more of an hourglass/ possible pear...

    1. I love Joan and David! Still miss the sandals that I finally had to get rid of last summer because they were so worn out! These fit TTS - went with my regular 5.5.

The seersucker dress was a 10 - I went up for bust reasons, but of course, I have no hips or bottom so you would have plenty o'room!

    2. There was a Joan and Davod outlet not far from us at the beach and when they would close for the season, their sales were... well, I'd buy 6 or8 pairs at a time. I'm still getting compliments on some of my old friends. When the company finally went under whoever bought the name is now just another purveyor of cut-price ordinaries. Sigh.

    3. I know. I cringe whenever I see Joan and David shoes in a store now. They went down the same sorry path as Laura Ashley USA, Sigrid Olsen, and countless other notable design companies that were gobbled up because they were so interesting and produced such singular worth while items. The new companies take anything that made them individual and stamp out hollow replicas. It is such a shame.

  4. They are gorgeousimmo! I think they look so cool on a woman.

I am listening to my disco play list right now so I'm right up for the disco ball.
George Benson just came on - smoooooth

  6. Love the shoes. Find Recovering Shopaholic Blog - her latest post I thought you might find useful/interesting. I did. It's about calculating what you really need in your closet on a more realistic scale. Let me know what you think.

    1. Hi T - just took a look! Really interesting! I would say based on her that I am pretty good. But I am anal, so I am making a list of all of my items for the spring portion of the wardrobe and will report back to you!

  7. Like them as well.....what did you not like about the monk strap loafers ? ( I have been eyeing those as well ) In store the bellas in the perforated style in navy and the light pink color are lovely .. I believe we may have similar likes>

    1. Hi Unknown!

They didn't fit me well - felt too loose, which is odd as they are the same size as these. I LOVE those Bellas! The curse of living where I live is that it is impossible to see these things and try them on in real life! I think it sounds like we do have similar tastes! Do you see my post on the monksstraps? I can go back and remind myself of which date it was!

  8. Those look adorable! I see you wear a 5.5. Do you think they would look like boats in a size 8?

  9. You caught my fingers outright lying! It should have said 6.5! I think they would look fine in an 8!

  10. Now see I ignored your whole post in favor of salivating over the St. Germain. Man, Elderflower liqueur is the best. :) I love my Canadian soul sisters.

  11. The brogues look fantastic on you Wendy and they go so well with you new and old clothes, what a great purchase!
I can only admire them.from.a far. If there is one thing that I can't pull off is brogues. I have long thighs compared to my calves and make me look super-stompy with skirts. With pants I feel like a clown. Oh well!

    1. Oh my god - am looking at my thighs and thinking damn -are those long? I've never measured! Ema you know so much!

  13. Those are great shoes, love how they go with so many things in your wardrobe! I am on the look-out for a good pair of brogues in a burnished dark brown leather but the right shade is so hard to find!!

    2. Louise - I wonder if you and I are looking for the shade? I used to have a fabulous pair from Sears of all places that gave up the ghost a few years ago - I still mourn those!

  14. Lady, have you got STYLE! Those shoes are just of the moment and they look delicious. Flats are the thing in Britain, to be worn with everything, according to the fashion mags. (So are socks!) I'll expect you to be walking down the street with a jaunty Fred Astaire spring in your step!

    1. Thanks! They are quite trendy I agree, but hope they are good for the long haul, because I have wanted a cream pair for years!!! The lovely A Bigger Closet gave me a bunch of styling ideas and I may try to recreate everyone from my closet!

  16. Very snappy looking. I can't do menswear shoes at my height and shoe size without looking like a man. Love shoes laced that way. They look adorable on your petite tootsies.

    1. Barry told me what that kind of lacing is called but I admit I am still learning to get them on and tie them in that way!

  17. I really love those shoes on you. Your outfit of the day looks like it makes you feel like you. Just perfect! I think you will wear them lots. I also wear 6.5. If we ever combined shoe collections we would need to rent out storage space. Enjoy.

  21. I too love this kind of shoe. They work really well on smaller feet like yours Would love to wear them too if they didn't look like a gondola when I look down at my feet. I will watch with envy when I see yours.
