Random Saturday Thoughts...

Okay First Things First:

Les Miserables!

I loved this movie.  It is beautifully shot, is well acted and is just an overall spectacle.  As you know, I like a good spectacle sometimes!

Especially good - Anne Hatheway - she will break your heart.

And Hugh Jackman was amazing.  I am sure there are people out there who don't care for Hugh Jackman, but I think he is pretty spiffy!

It clocks in at a good 2 1/2 hours, but is faithful to the musical and is so well done that I think you can stamp it "classic".  I first saw Les Miz on Broadway in 1989.  This movie lived up to my expectations!

J Crew New Rollouts

I wasn't over the moon about the January roll-out.  Of course, I am shopped out and with my new self-imposed discipline about only adding one or two (or less!) items to my wardrobe a month or even two months, it has to be something VERY special to get me to part with my money!

What I did like:

Silk short-sleeve blouse

The silk short-sleeve blouse.  A nice addition for when spring finally shows up here in late April (which means I have lots of time to wait for this to go on sale!)

Jules dress in scroll print

Jules dress in scroll print.  I do not think golden mustard is the colour for me, but will watch for reviews of this, as I might be short enough to wear it!  I think it looks very chic, as does the Jules Dress in the Botanical Print:

Collection Jules dress in botanical print

The Rosie dress in colourblock also looks promsing, but again, am going to need to see this in real life (perhaps when I am in NYC in March):

Rosie dress in colorblock

No surprise, I also love the pencil skirt in the scroll print, but sadly, I know i cannot do a 27" length!

Long No. 2 pencil skirt in scroll print

Now, if they would just come out with a petite skirt in the blue scroll print below...

Bandeau tank in scroll print

That was it for me.  Am content to wait till I go to NYC and see some of these in person!

On the 5th day of Christmas, WMM gave to me:

A beautiful sunset!  We don't stop and watch enough sunsets do we?  In winter, I see a LOT of sunrises as it so dark when we wake up in the morning!  It is nice to remind ourselves to stop and drink in the moment.  This was taken in France this past summer - I am sure Dani knows the view well.  I likely won't get to France again any time soon, but I am enjoying the memory!

Have a wonderfully relaxing Saturday!

  1. I can't bear musicals, but I might, just might watch a bit of it for Hugh Jackman's body! I really like the look of that navy shift dress, it looks really easy to wear. Yellow is one of those shades that does nothing for me, yet it's so lovely and always cheers me up.

    1. He is quite bulked up in this. Not as many shirt off shots that would like!

I think the navy shift dress could be quite good for speing. I am like you on the yellow. I can wear exactly one shade of yellow and it is rarely made! We have had SO much snow here and it is scheduled to snow again tomorrow!

Am off to the Hobbit with the son today. He has already seen it but wants to see it again. I will remember that I can go to the washroom during the dwarf fighting scene!

    2. WMM- it was the dwarf singing scene that tested my patience.

    3. A kindred spirit! I can bear a few musicals but not many. The Sound of Music qualifies as bearable, Phantom of the Opera and Les Mis I enjoyed in the theater, but that's about it for me. Tried to watch the movie Mamma Mia, the pain! lol

    4. Thanks Tabs - I will step out at that point to do my business!! My husband anjoyed Les Miz, which surprised me as he really loathed Phantom in the theatre!

    5. Oh Tabs - i forgot to say: will it bother you if I break into song and dance at any point? especially if I can;t sing or dance? Heehee! :-)

  2. I adore the blue scroll print on the bathing suit! I tried on the gold scroll print dress yesterday and it is a stunner, but the gold color was ghastly next to my face. I had second thoughts about the length, because it wasn't bad on me, as long as I'm not doing The Wave or sitting down I think I'd be safe :-) This dress is so pretty I might get over the color problem if I had someplace to wear it, but the two combined make it a no-go for me.

Glad Les Miserable was so good. I like Anne Hathaway and I'll bet she was amazing in this.

    1. Cate, I suspect we have similar colouring and the the yellow would be a no go for me! I have decided to buy nothing from J Crew till the begining of Match when I will be in NYC. The only exception will be if the black silk tie pants go on for a good price - I think those could be awesome for years! How tall are you?

    2. I think we do have similar coloring. Did you say you have Scottish ancestry? I am half Italian but you would never know it from my skin tone, that is all from the Irish/Scottish/English side of the family. I'm 5'4" so could technically get away with the Jules. I think I could wear the color in a skirt or shorts, just not next to my face. I tried on the black silk tie pants and they are beautiful (and a bit shiny). Even my dressier events aren't dressy enough for them though, so back they went. With regret! I hate sending back the pretties.

    3. Cate - I am definitely of northern european descent! I am as white as can be even in July and had porcelain skin till I was in my 40s (it is ruddier now). I always look healthy and hale! I am 5'2" so I am thinking the Jules could be good. I did not care for the plain wool Jules, but it could be how they were styling them on the website!

  3. Had the good fortune to see Les Mis in London shortly after it opened there. Doubt that anything could live up to that experience. I left the theatre looking around for a barricade to defend.

I'm thinking that the JC "design team" is secretly working for you!

    1. Fred - you could be on to something! Could Mickey have secretly fallen in love with me when he saw me in my cheetah skirt (which BTW, i have not worn yet!) and has directed that henceforth - all clothes shall be cut short???

  4. Morning WMM, so glad you enjoyed Les Mis and our other Anne! Count me as a Jackman fan. If you are in NYC and really like coffee you should try a "flat white" at his amazing little fair trade coffee shop.
Today, I am doing practical chores and wondering if we will get across the Causeway in tomorrow's storm. We could leave for Halifax today, but I always miss the pater plus am feeling lazy about dressing up and visiting, think even our closest friends need a Sunday off and can't eat any more at my family *groan*.
My mum's name was Juliet but everyone called her Jules/ Jewels. And that dress style is very her in the 1970s. So I have been wanting one. But fear prints too busy or will look like a sack on mismatched top-bottom moi. Plus I have my eye on a Brooks Brothers suit Dani spotted in store for me, which is more practical for me (separates better fit and more wear) so staying away from the Crewery.
Oh and in the wee hours of morning I thought of titles for your official and half-birthday weeks (must celebrate Bastille Day with feast). Hanwell 5-0 da, dah, dah, dah, dah...

    1. BTW, be sure to tell Barry & Son, fashion/ goss. outlets already starting stories on dressing Kate's bump, what normal Christmases (chez Middletons) will look like for Baby Wales.

    2. Well just stay safe crossing the causeway! I always dramaticize this after reading "No Great Mischief"! I like Hanwell 5-0 - so much kinder and less kinky than 50 Shades of Wendy! I definitely need a theme of some sort! I am so excited about this half-birthday concept! I am gob-smacked that I have missed it, given how much I adore a good party!!

I love the name Jules! Just like Jamie Oliver's wife (I know different spelling!) BTW - I AM going to make steak tartar here with good organic beef in 2013. I will not be daunted!

They will be glad to hear about Kate and baby - I think they are hoping to have her here next summer - she did miss NB after all and this would be a lovely place for her and baby to relax!

    3. Go WMM, I will send you directions for Broodje Filet Americain - the Dutch/ Belgian take on tartare that you get to do "mix-ins" with. May go down better (chopped boiled egg, no raw). Hubs thinks very strange that this once long-time veggie will tuck into "meat sushi". But tartare with farm beef was one of Nan's party pieces along with fondue and rumaki.

  5. Berna saw Les Miz on Thursday and is freaking out about Hugh Jackman. It's like she never noticed him before and now she's head over heels in love. Uh oh!
I woke up to more snow raging down this morning, we're into it now! I do like this winter weather but our son is travelling to the US later today and this does not bode well for his flight out of Pearson.
I like that print on the Jules as well, the botanical shift calls to me but I know it won't work.
I am tempted by a few items in the JC sale but must stay strong!

    1. Dani - I have decided to not even look! I will wait till I am almost in NYC and then peek! Am about to start all kinds of "pattern interruptions" - jumping jacks, face slaps, kicking self to be good!

I hope your son doesn't have to wait too long at Pearson. It is a gloriously snny day here, but when the snow comes tomorrow I have no clue where we will put it!

Oh you wait till you see Hugh, too!

  6. Count me in as a Hugh Jackman fan too. I have not seen the movie with him and Anne, but am putting it on my 'must watch' list now. Speaking of Les Miz...did you get your tickets yesterday?

There is not anything I'm interested in from the new arrivals at J.Crew, but I do really like the new prints on the Jules dress. I'm hoping they will offer them in a blouse or even a scarf, since the Jules silhouette does not work for me.

This weekend will be spent at home relaxing and resting up. My seven year-old and I are fighting colds, so I am prescribing movie time, hot tea with honey, and homeade soup for us. :)

Enjoy your Saturday, and have fun at the movie with your son!

    2. Yes to soup and tea - always works a wonder, as does a fun movie! We are all set for The Hobbit so I think all will be good there!

You may be quite proud of me today, I did a "do over" of horrible dress outfit of 3 or 4 weeks ago. I think I may have it right now - though you will be the judges!

  7. I am waiting for my best friend to be back from vacation to go and see Les Mis. She is a huge Huge Jackman fan and we always tease her telling her that he is gay (which I am sure he's not but it is funny because she gets upset). He is not my type (too bulky for me) but he is a great showman so I am sure I will be under his charm during the movie.
I still want to see Anna Karenina because I loved Atonement.
I love that silk tee too but I must resist, I am sure it will be on sale before I can even think of wearing it! All this stuff will be on the sale racks when you are in NYC, I am sure of that!

    1. Ema - you are so right! And one of the things I have realized is EVERYTHING pops back at one point or another! I cannot wait for Anna Karenina - it is not here yet - not sure when it gets released in more theatres?

    2. Oh I really want the encore trench to appear one day, I just couldn't afford it when I ordered it that time, it was on huge double mark up through Net a Porter.

  8. I was underwhelmed by the rollout too, not a single thing made it to my wishlist.

The short-sleeve silk blouse is a basic style that I'm already seeing at other retailers for spring so if you want one you can certainly find the one that is perfect for you. J.Crew's is basically a short-sleeve Talitha with the seam across the chest and puffy sleeves, which were not flattering to my busty figure, never mind that the LS one I tried had several defects. I think the puffy sleeves would be an issue under sweaters and jackets as well anyway so this one is a total pass. I will likely purchase a similar version of this blouse and right now the frontrunner is THIS ONE in white, which I think is prettier and more versatile in the long run. I just wonder if I could get the darn thing over my head without smearing makeup. Maybe there is a side zip that was not mentioned in the copy. Will have to check it out on my U.S. trip in January. We probably won't get it in the Calgary store until March!

Hopefully J.Crew will bring the Jules out in a blue version of the scroll print. I think that would be perfect for you. The yellow one is not your friend. Trust me.

    1. That is a stunning blouse! I may just go to BB when in NYC the rate things are going!! You are right about the puffed sleeves - that why I could not do the Talitha!

You made me laugh out loud at the "Trust Me" comment!
