The 1035 Superfine Cotton Suit and some JC sale picks

Many thanks again for all of your wonderful advice yesterday!

Of course, all day I wondered if what I was wearing is flattering once I started to read your post and learned more and more as the day went along...

Hmm - I like this suit, but not sure about the pose... I have the V thing going on, but jacket could be smidge too long...I think I would like the trousers better if I wasn't wearing the dark belt.  And I am wearing the valentinas in leopard print, but my feet are killing me and they are going to be finding a new home as these kinds of valentinas are not for me...Odd, as the slingbacks are divine...

I like the superfine cotton - it is soft and is fine for awhile until the weather gets worse but I am not LOVING this.  It is fine, and comfortable but not special I don't think...

I went into the closet and dug out the ralph lauren trousers I referred to yesterday - here they are:

I did not try them on for you as frankly I am tired tonight!  They are fully lined, fit like a trouser should  and are flattering I believe..

A close-up of the fabric:

I am going to search for a corduroy blazer and consider the schoolboy in purple flannel..
Schoolboy blazer in wool flannel

unless I can find something else.. since this is not on sale, I can wait...

I can see that this blazer, the trousers and the manchester purple tie top could be quite lovely as an outfit..

Something like this, from smart set of all places, is also a cut that might look nice with it:

FAUX LEATHER JACKET

So I will keep looking!

I also REALLY like the look Gwyneth is rocking in her JC ad:

I am unfamiliar with the hacking jacket cut and am afraid it will also be too boxy at the shoulders for me and i have heard that the capris are "wooly" and very thick...

I am heading away for meeting later Thursday returning Friday evening.  Since I will be away before the end of the sale, I decided that I would add a treat from the sale:

I decided to add to my minnie collection - I already have the navy and boulevard green minnies.  I LOVE the minnies and am now a complete convert.  So for $63 CDN, I think I can get a lot of wear out of these bright minnies for my weekends, with boots, et al..

I love the poppy velvet blazer, but do not think it is the right shade for up by my face...could just be my monitor!!!

Have a great day!

  1. FIDDY CENTS WMM, I think it's hard to get "excited" about khaki since it makes a lot of people look a bit washed out. Get the monochromatic hues goal. But this might be a time when I would suggest one of your lovely colours (blues, pinks) next to your face, a la G. in the quiet grey. I do think a paler, "matching" belt would make for less of a visual stop. If you like the Valentinas print, there is a JC belt in same very light leopard pattern that you might be able to catch as a popback/ ride-along. I think the grey suit pants look a little bulky in hip area even on super-skinny G. Finally IMHO the purple jacket and blouse might be a bit much paired. I do like the idea of the purple blouse and a casual/ (p)leather type jacket to add a bit of non-tradition (if you can manage that at your work). However, having seen the trousers, I'm thinking they need something chocolate-y hue to give you that unified, un-suit look. I would keep an eye on Danier's fall sale...Tons of great comments yesterday; think your Wednesday is a hit. And have a good trip.

    1. Hey Getfresh! Thanks for you fiddy cents!

Good idea on Danier - I am actually going by one tomorrow so I think I will pop in and see what is available!

It is so funny on the hip area! I have no hips to speak of and when I look at the picture I feel like I do! Not necessarily a good thing...

I will take your advice on the colour there! I am actually contemplating that blouse Gwyneth is rocking in the picture as I have so much it would go with!

I think the Wednesday is a hit too - people love to give and get good advice!

    2. I think your hips look fine! I only meant that those JC capris look a bit puffy/ bulky - never a good thing in pants. And never mind whenever I zero in on this area, my own personal challenge. (I emailed you a pic yesterday of your wardrobe inspiration with the JC Schoolboy; you'll be able to see just what I mean.)

    3. You are right - the pockets fit funny and some are especially worse than others!

  2. I think you look great in trouser suits, I used to wear them lot, I think they work so well with curly tousled mops, I like the juxtaposition.
Did you see Gwyneth in that white dress last night? Oh she looked amazing, of to have neat tresses!
I've been stalking those Valentinas on Ebay, but the rotters won't mail here, oh but I didn't realise that in America you don't need to go to the post office if you want to mail something - that is utterly utterly fabulous!

The Minnies were awful on me, and I hated the feeling off the twill, it was too hard for me, are those the wool ones, are they comfy?

    1. Tabs - you wouldn't be 6.5 would you! I would be glad to send these to a new home where I know they would be loved!

We have a lot of little post offices in our drug stores here - makes it very much simpler!

    2. forgot to answer last question - these are twill but I find them comfy! I have to try the wool ones - I am little nervous of itch!

    3. Oh the vanities WMM! I have the exact shoes in 6.5 but they have been relegated to "at my desk" wear. I can't walk-about downtown or take the TTC with them as they pinch quickly, but are also big in the heel. Tabs, always happy to "mule" for you. We still have to drop at post office, but no queue like Royal Mail.

    4. No, no I'm not as dainty toed as you! Ah, that's funny the twill feels like cardboard next to my skin.
Get Fresh - ah, all our little ones have been closed now, so it's a drive and then it's as if we were all queuing for bread in war time.

    5. As WMM notes, they have moved a lot of ours to corner desks in Canada's largest pharmacy and convenience chain, to the detriment of a lot of great buildings, small communities and safe (union) jobs. Weirdly, in my city, we have a retail one and a big echoing empire building leftover one less than a block from each other, ergo no queue.

  3. Oh and I love the other trousers, great pattern.

  5. The tonal dressing is a win for you. This suit looks nice. The jacket could be shorter, for future purchases, but this still looks great. I agree with you that the dark/wide belt might not be the best choice. Although the blouse looks good, I'd try a top with more color next time. I love Gwyneth's look too. The Hacking Jacket is something you have to try on in a few sizes to know if it works on you. I think the top she is wearing is a flannel shirt, but I like it and I love it paired with the gray. I like your Wednesday series, it is fun and really helpful!

    1. Thanks Cate!

I am going to wait for the shirt to go on sale and then try it! I think the Aurey jacket is a better fit, which is what my pinstripe and navy JC suits are!

On the other hand - this is kind of a Lauren Hutton suit - minus the mile-long legs!

    2. It makes you look tall, though, that's why the tonal pieces are good on you!

  6. Hi WMM, this is a great series - I have bookmarked yesterday's comments and the link about skirt lengths, very helpful. I'll have to study them carefully; I don't think I've ever really considered fit in this way before, you certainly learn something new every day, don't you?
By the way, I love the pattern on your RL trousers, especially the purple line.

    1. Hi Patricia! It is fun to hear all these questions! I am learning so much!

  7. WMM, that's how I feel in suits in general. Just kind of "blah", even though it looks nice and everything. Yours looks great. But I know what you mean!!!

I find the Hacking to be more streamlined than the schoolboy and thus more flattering. I am referring to the double serge wool from last year, it is my favorite jacket. Boxy it is not. Blazers and jackets are so tricky though; very hard to find a good fit!!

    2. I love the shape but be warned its a cheap thin tweed. Someone ommented on my thin tweed today - we aren't used to that here but of course the colour is great.

    3. Ooh - don't want cheap.....it is hard, isn't it?

Too bad you aren't a 6.5 - they would have been yours!!
