In the beginning, they say that the VIP lounge at studio 54 only had some white plastic lawn chairs. Later it appears they threw a scarf or blanket over an old couch!
Our VIP lounge was slightly more upscale (but only marginally so!)
The entrance to the VIP Lounge, where weary celebrities were able to relax and get away from the "little people". It may look like you are in my library ready to go into my back room, but that would simply be a lack of imagination!
Before the party, disco balls hanging from the ceiling. You can see all that white snow outside our french doors in the woods.. sigh..
A closeup of the makeup - so MUCH makeup! Who did I go as? Given I am such a patriotic Canadian, and given my hair, that really left only one option: Margaret Trudeau!!!
Oh I was the original golden diva, given that the 14th is my golden anniversary!
My date for the night. We couldn't figure out who he was, but settled on Elton John in the end...
Thanks to the Merry Wife, who reminded me to add "It's Raining Men" to the playlist. I did, and that got all the men on the dance floor early, including my husband and one of his pals!
Actually, for some odd reason, last night the men dominated the dance floor. This is not typically the case at a party Chez WMM, but at one point, it was only men dancing. Which, if you think of it, was pretty typical for the original Studio 54. The other funny thing is that the men would gather outside the french doors in the snow, smoking cigars and showing each other every aspect of their polyester ensembles! If you had lit a match, we would have all gone up in flames!
More pictures to come of the guests this week, as I am now waiting for photos, having given up taking pictures after I opened my first gift which was the box set of Fifty Shades of Grey. Wrapped in a tie. Those of you who have read the books will know what this means. I do not know, but I am guessing!
Suffice to say, it was a grand time. The last guest left around 12:30 am (this is provincial life after all and we are mid-century creatures!), I crawled into bed full of champagne and hickory sticks (we had pigs in blankets too!) and stayed in bed this a.m. until I was sure Barry had it all cleaned up :-) I am not proud of that fact, but it is the truth! My hair is still stiff as a board this morning!
It turns out that a disco dance party helps lessen the sting of turning the big 5-0!
Today's plans - rest, get ready for the Golden Globes (must get more Hickory Sticks!) and some yoga! Good lord, I was so stiff this morning!
Have a fabulous Sunday and Stay Safe Out There!
Is that Betty Ford on the right? Could she have been at Studio 54? Help me! |

Leave it up to you to imagine what would have been on that mirror in the heyday of Studio 54! and yes, we recreated that with icing sugar! |

FIRST LADY Everybody deserves a chance to party like a Rolling Stone. And you definitely looked the part WMM. Now you've just gotta wash that cornflake crunch outta your hair before another red carpet night.
ReplyDeleteGF-you are so right! Two shampoos and a load of conditioner! Yuck!
DeleteHickory Sticks! Oh gosh!
ReplyDeleteYou looked fabulous darling and I am laughing over Barry looking so enthusiastic.
Stretch ever so slowly and rest up today. How are you going to wash out the hairspray? I'll be watching the Golden Globes tonight too, planning some major snacks for it as well!
I love the GGs -so fun, compared to the formality of the oscars, thought love them, too!
DeleteHappy Birthday! Sounds as though the party was a great time.
ReplyDeleteThanks Kikki cee - it sure was fun!
DeleteSo glad you had pigs in a blanket - was thinking of them when you described your plans for the party. Looks like you had a fantastic time, and I admire your courage and creativity with your party planning. Happy 50th!
ReplyDeleteHi Kathy- is almost masochistic, this need to have the odd party. We are a good group of friends who have been friends for years - nothing fancy about us! Pigs in blankets were such a hit!
DeleteHi WMM! It sounds like the party was a huge success, not to mention a LOT of fun, too! You looked absolutely fabulous, btw! I'm so pleased to hear that you had a great time, and that you did not have to clean up, either! I'm also looking forward to even more pics! :)
ReplyDeleteIt is nice not to clean sometimes! :-)
DeleteIt was a grand time!
Wow, you certainly had a big time! And looked the part!! Congratulations to you on this important b-day.
ReplyDeleteThanks Lane!
DeleteTypical late 70's starlet ( or a Lohan)...party all night, sleep all day, party again all night. Enjoy the Globes. Here's to the female hostesses- hope they show all how it's done.
ReplyDeleteI am with you! So excited to see Tina & Amy! I do kind of look like a Lohan, don't I?
DeleteLooks very fun and I love your look! Happy birthday!!!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks Cate!
DeleteHappy Birthday- you looked gorgeous daahhling...I am also looking forward to the GG's this evening. Can't wait to get the flannel pants on and the jiffy pop going. You (and Barry) are going to love the Fifty Shades books- pure fun trash. Talk to you soon...NJ
ReplyDeleteI will think of you NJ - I will be in my pjs too!
DeleteFabulous! Happy Birthday! Hope you are not too hung over. :-D
ReplyDeleteThanks Merry Wife - all good! Sort of...
DeleteHappy Birthday WMM!!!!!
ReplyDeleteYou look great and i am glad you didnt have to clean up this morning:)
MARGARET TRUDEAU - YES!!! Of course!!! I Love It! You made me laugh out loud quite heartily there.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like my kind of party (complete with costumes, celebs, decorations and an appropriate soundtrack) - so glad you had a great time!!
Thanks LR!
DeleteI only have a couple of those in me a year, but they are fun!
OMG Margaret Trudeau!
ReplyDeleteMy colorist, now a pillar of the community, was one of the cute underage "club kids" at the original 54. Now he's sober, of course, and were both amazed that he lived through what he did. And that he remembers a lot of it!
Happy 50, WMM, what a lovely party!
What great stories he must have! Is he a good colourist?
DeleteOh, and yes, that is definitely Betty Ford (pre Center I'm assuming). I "did the Google."
ReplyDeleteNow THAT is funny! Wouldn't you have liked to have been a Fly on that couch?
DeleteHi WMM, I just knew your party would be a hoot! :0) I'm glad you all had a wonderful time and that you could relax today - you deserve your lie-in!
ReplyDeleteThanks Patricia!
DeleteIt sounds like a blast!
ReplyDeleteYes..Betty with Liz and Liza. I think they were all "guests" of the clinic:-)
Maybe that's where they met?
DeleteCan you imagine the husband/ commander in chief/ backstage boyfriend chat THOSE three could come up with? Polyester has sadly made a comeback - in blouses and dresses at the J. Crew Collection.
ReplyDeleteMaybe jcrew knew about my party, like the sartorialist and the capes...
DeleteHappy Birthday WMM!!! So glad your party was a hoot but we it would be with a hostess like you! And Barry gets points (again!) for cleaning up, what a sweetie he is!
ReplyDeleteThanks AJC!
DeleteIt was so fun!
Happy Birthday WMM!! It looks like a fabulous time was had by all! Love the sequin dress!!
ReplyDeleteThanks Louise! The sequin dress was a great JC purchase of last year!
DeleteThank you so much for sharing! You look gorgeous! Just know everybody in my household was doing a little birthday dance for you.
ReplyDeletethanks Anthro Blogger! I love a good birthday dance!
DeleteI am new to your blog. Happy Birthday!
ReplyDeleteMargaret Trudeau - hysterical!!! Too clever.
