Sunday, with Apologies to Lewis Carroll

"The time has come," WMM said,
"To talk of many things:
Of hobbits-es and red plaid pants--
Of dress-do-overs-with bling--
And why my shape has nary a waist--
And what tomorrow brings"

So I have officially crossed into the realm of Vacationland - I do not have a clue what today is.  When you read this, it will be Sunday, but all of the days since Christmas have officially blurred together, one giant conglomeration of truffles, scotch shortbread, turkey, movies, and the odd partaking of spirits, both of the red wine, champagne and baileys variety.  So imagine my surprise to discover when I got up this morning that it was Saturday!

#1 and only son and I went to The Hobbit this afternoon.  This was his 2nd time and my first.  I must tell you that I am a huge fan of all of Tolkien's books and all of Peter Jackson's renderings of those books on the screen.  Tabitha gave it good marks and I was quite pleased.  Again, ate whole large bag of popcorn.  Not proud of that, but there you go.

I did not think it possible, but it turns out you can have a crush on a middle earth dwarf.  This one in fact:

Richard Armitage Talks 'Hobbit' And Thorin Oakenshield, Takes A Phone Call From Sauron

Thorin Oakenshield, Soon to be King of the Dwarves, played by Richard Armitage.  Here is the actor in real life (or as real life as one gets):

Actor Armitage dons crown of Thorin

Oh, as a Dwarf King he is short, but then I am, too, so no worries there!

Yesterday I wore my plaid pants for the last time for the holiday season, then off they go to be dry-cleaned and then packed away till next Christmas!

Goodbye plaid pants - I wore you well!

Today, I dug back out my nougat London knit dress which I styled so horribly a few weeks back:

if you recall, I did not wear this out of the house.  Here is round 2:

No makeup here, but I think better.  The belt had slipped so I moved it up after I saw that in the picture.  I like this much better.  I really love this little blingy cardigan.  Thoughts?  I always wonder what it would be like to have a waspish waist...

Do you have your plans sorted out for New Years?  We do not - we thought we might have a houseful of teens but maybe not now, so we are holding off on buying the noisemakers, etc until Monday morning!  I don't even know what I will cook.  Disorganized indeed!  Is anyone planning anything glamorous?

On the 6th Day of Christmas WMM gave to me:

A Treasure Box with Remembrances of Sacrifices Made

I got his lovely little bevelled glass and brass treasure box for Christmas.  I plan to change the contents on a regular basis, but looked around my bedroom first.  I spied two stones, one from Juno Beach and the other from Omaha Beach that I picked up on our visit to Normandy France in 2008.  These stones have significant meaning and memory for me of a day honouring both Canadian and American soldiers (but for you Yanks - please take a visit to the Canadian museum when you go, it is really quite impressive!) and their sacrifices.  So they get to be the first treasure displayed in my little box!  I love little momentos like these of my travels and if they are natural items, like stones or feathers, all the better.

Have a wonderful Sunday and stay safe out there!

  1. No, no! Why must the red tartan pants be put away already? I just dug out my red cashmere cable cowlneck to wear with mine and have more plaid lined up for January. Is wearing plaid past the Christmas holiday season like wearing white after Labor Day?

I how you are styling your sweater dress. Yes, the tone on tone work! You know what my answer is on bling. ;) And though we're doing casual with just the family. I will be in sequins, you can be sure of that.

Love your treasure box. I used to collect a small rock or shell from wherever I visit.

    2. Hey Tiffany Rose!

They are sadly going away for awhile as they have turkey on them and need to be cleaned! Plus, I really need to bring out the other fancy pants for the rest of the holidays! They are crying for attention! You and Dani and I are gong to have to plan the polka dot pant evening, where we can toast each other!

I always collect rocks and shells - make me so happy to have them!

    3. Aha, other fancy pants, yes, mine need to be let out too. What do you think, your lucky pants? I might wear that one for NYE, as the flowers remind me of fireworks.

Let's do that, on maybe a Miller Time Friday, when we toast each other with our cozy sweaters and chocolate polka dot lounging pant.

  2. Oh the treasure box is an absolute delight as are the red pants, I must pick them up on Ebay
some time. Did you survive the dwarves' singing scene? We went to a preview of the film and the 3 D and 48 frames per minute fanciness got stuck and we had to watch that 4 times!

    1. Ah, the dwarves only sang once, so it was not so bad! I was dizzy in the goblin king cave and I have the sneaking suspicion, if left unchecked, that my newly acquired double chin could become quite goblin king-like. I really want to live in Bag End. I really do! NZ is on my list of travels - i have cousins there (my grandmother was born in Christchurch, NZ) and have never been. That is for my 50s!

    2. WMM -it is my life's goal to live in Bag End - those houses are my dream and the gardens and the food, let's build that village! Peter Jackson has one of those houses in his garden as his guest house - can you imagine? And yes, we'd be small enough to get in the door!
Didn't you think the Elves land, Rivendal, was beautiful but just too cold and austere?

    3. I am with you, the Elves are too stand-offish, but the Hobbits are a good time! I want one of those as my guest house, too!

  3. I like the outfit re-do, it looks nice! It sounds like the treasure box was a perfect gift for you. Do your blue suede shoes fit in it? lol! Sadly I feel like I am coming out of the holiday haze. Real life obligations are creeping up on me and all the things I have put on the back burner need attention. No New Years plans, it is not my favorite holiday. I wish I could think of something fun to do, maybe we should go see the Hobbit!

    1. Hi Cate!

I am with you! I have a bag full of condolence letters to write thank you letters about, my house needs straightening and I need to think of the first two weeks of work, But that will be Tuesday's task! I wish the blue shoes could fit in! They are going on my feet for the day today! I need fairy shoes for sure!

  4. The treasure box is a wonderful gift. You will make it meaningful and I bet it will become even more special over time.

I like the do-over outfit very much. The tonal hosiery and shoes elongate the line and the belted cardigan gives it nice structure. The sweater bling adds interest to offset the soft colors, it's perfect.

  5. Hi WMM, I think that Richard Armitage is quite tall in real life - he was Geraldine's love interest at the end of the series of The Vicar of Dibley and they get married. He is quite the dish! (I think Dawn French had a particular hand in casting him!)
Your do-over outfit is very pretty. We don't have anything planned for New Years (or Hogmanay as Tabitha would say). Like Cate, it's not my favourite time of year, very nostalgic in a sad way. Still, looking forward to a new year!

    1. HI Patricia! Oh - I have to see the Vicar of Dibley! FFM has recommended as well! WIll search this out on netflix or apple TV!

      I am like you - I always felt Dec 31st was over-rated!

    2. WMM - I think you will LOVE The Vicar of Dibley! Very English, the characters are hilarious, top notch all the way!

  6. Oh, love the cardigan with the belt!

I think our NYE will be a quiet one. We thought briefly about going to dinner that night, but then remembered that the restaurants never seem to be quite up to their usual standards that night (who can blame them?). So we'll boil up some lobsters and crabs instead.

    1. Oh good for you! I think we will be quiet too, with maybe a couple of fireworks!

  7. Maybe you can keep the tartan pants in rotation by making them less Christmasy. I wore mine with a black sweater and white blouse. No new years plans yet. As I have gotten older, it is not as much fun to watch people make fools of themselves. Really like the redo outfit. Tim would say you made it work! I was all set to return the silky brown polkadot pants but then I made some cute outfits with them. Guess that means I can join you all at the polkadot soirée.

    1. YAy SHopping Celle - I think those pants are quite grand - it is all in the styling!

My plaid pants need a good drycleaning and then I will decide if I drag them into January! They are awfully comfortable!

Have a happy new year - I am like you - prefer the quiet!

  8. I am so ready for the New Year. Somehow I have turned into the village idiot these last few days of 2012. I have tried to put a mitten on my foot- thought it was a sock ...I swear. While about to take a bath this evening, I turned off all the lights- swore I was going to bed. Sigh. Saw your post...in the dark, with the glow of my iPad...and saw your original styling of the outfit and then the redo. Job well done! Having fois GRAS and desert wine for New Years Eve. Sorry to any Members of PETA. Bottom's Up!

    2. Blue Booby - Aragorn is such a gorgeous heroic man. Sadly, I don't care as much for Viggo Mortenson when he is all cleaned up! WHat does that say about me? Must be my viking heritage!!

Love good foie gras and I have a bottle of ice wine chilling as well!

  9. How did I miss this post?!
Great job restyling the dress, it's perfect. I feel the same way about Viggo Mortenson, I love him as Aragorn but otherwise not so much!
