Style Wednesday: SPARKLE ALL THE WAY!

I'm not going to lie - at times, I wish I could be always tasteful.

I wish I could be reserved, less enthusiastic about life, hold a little back.

I see a refined individual and think "oh to be like them".  But I am not like them.  I have never been like them, really.  And while I can visit their land and try their clothing and their décor, and even use it myself by times, there is something particularly, well, excessive about me.

So it can be no surprise that I adore Christmas, since of course it the season of over the top.

Yes, I see those tasteful homes with their tasteful and minimalist Christmas trees and décor.  But that is not here.  It will never be here.

Cause I like me some sparkle.
I was thinking of this today as I was looking in my closet to get dressed in the morning.  The party clothing has somehow migrated into my main closet for the holiday season and it was making me smile....

The pale chiffon camisole with the pink paillettes that sparkle gold when the light catches them...

The shimmery black Vera Moda Sweater that looks divine with skinny jeans and these over the top ballets:

And maybe I'll take along this clutch sometime in the next month:

Oh the sparkle doesn't come out nearly as much as it would like to, but I always find it cheers me considerably.

On my writing desk right now I am looking at a little sparkly globe:

and a lovely circus tent ornament I found at Pier One, which could be put away at the end of the season but won't be, as it reminds me that sometimes it's not a bad thing to run away and join the circus...

We are coming to the darkest days, and I am ready to sparkle.  And won't apologize for it!!!

How about you - any plans to don the sparkle this season?

Have a great day and stay safe out there!

  1. Love your sparkle, Wendy! the sequins and the shoes are amazing!
I would love to do a bit of sparkle, but I don't think I own any sequins (hangs head in shame). I do have one LBD by Karen Walker that has a sparkly fish pattern embossed in it - it's very 1920 style, and I wear it at least a couple of time a year. I might get it out for the upcoming season.
Seeing as I've embraced leopard, perhaps this will be the year I break out some real full-on sparkle too!

    3. Ruth, TR and I are willing to travel to help you out! Considering your love of colour and how fabulous you look in it, I cannot imagine you without a fine bit of bling! Those factory tank tops from J Crew are good quality and you could wear them with aplomb!

    4. Ruth, I cond these motions. As WMM said, you could wear with aplomb, and with a little leopard! ;)

  2. ahhhh, velvet. This is the season when I break out the velvet. Velvet seems to stay put when I wear it, which is important during the party season. When the moon is full, things fall off me - sequins, jewelry, shoe buckles, buttons - bras pop, elastic breaks, and I can't wear a watch because it will stop. Himself has learned not to read anything personal into my sudden appearance without pieces of clothing, he understands that all the buttons popped by themselves or a zipper broke causing skirt to fall down, sans ulterior motive. Full moon, elderly lady next door rang my bell to tell me she wasn't a parrot and didn't want a cracker.

  3. I personally love that you sparkle. I think the world can use more sparkle and that you are just the woman to add it. You have always had a style. Look at your lovely home. No need to try to fit into someone else's taste. You are the perfect Wendy. So get the glitter ready, Christmas is on its way!

    1. Teacups - I forgot to add that after I drafted this post yesterday I purchased some Lancôme sparkle highlighter for the month of December! It is spreading! I may become like Midas, only one big sparkle!

  4. Wendy, do I have any plans! I want that cami, sweater, shoes and bag! I wear the stuff all year long but during this time, I am in my element with sparkles, tartans, cozy woolies and boots.

I think, wait, I know, I'd love to do Christmas with you!

    1. Oh My God TR - would you ever! I will say one thing about myself, however immodest it may sound: I give GOOD Christmas! I could do it for a living! Am going to start to break out the Christmas this weekend - dishes first. I have to be ready to help my American friends get ready for Thanksgiving! I have actually decided to put that on my bucket list: be in the US on American Thanksgiving!

    3. will we watch football (which I don't understand) and matching sweaters??????? Yippee!

      Delete
    4. Absolutely! There will be plenty games, husby and I will even explain trick plays and the different rules for college and pro. You'll be an expert after our immersion session. Matching sweaters, yes, and could be matching fancy pants for a fancy dinner if you kept your lucky trous!

    5. Oh and one last thing - will someone run from the table after they share a deep dark secret? I've seen that before in American Thanksgiving movies!

Or we could just tell your husband one about me!

      Delete
    6. Oh we can make that happen! And remember our gravy boat in my post last year, think we know how to do Thanksgiving. So it's a deal then, trade you Thanksgiving here for Christmas there?

You certainly "got" Thanksgiving when you asked about football ... husby always thought it the perfect holiday: family and friends, food and football, what more could you want!

  5. Oh Wendy I love sparkle too! I just don't have that much. I o think too much taupe can be ell so sparkle away! :)

    1. I liked "ell" - I thought it was the bloody Brit in you! I am learning to love neutrals, but the closest to beige you will see in my house is cream. I do like it in other's homes and I think if I ever want a truly tranquil vacation, I would go visit Janet - she is my exact opposite décor-wise, but I just adore her and her home!

  6. I could have written this post word for word -- love it! I never celebrated Christmas until I met my husband and had some pre-conceived misgivings about a holiday in which I had never taken part and through which I had always felt a bit left out. But I LOVE Christmas. It is a lovely, lovely holiday and it livens up a whole time of year for people to be happy and cheery and bright (and sparkly!). I love the sequinned shirt -- I have never been able to find one that works for me, though I want one desperately!

    1. M - we would have a good time, because - wait for it - I have ALWAYS wanted to celebrate Hanukkah! Actually, after seeing Fiddler on the Roof when I was 8, I spent the next year dreaming of being a Russian Orthodox Jew. The heart wants what it wants! Oh - that is the next thing I am adding to the bucket list - celebrating the Sabbath or one of the last nights of Hanukkah!

Really - for so many Christmas is a strictly pagan holiday (as it once started) now - but I love the whole thing - so lovely!

    2. Have you ever gone to a Passover Seder? Because for my money that is the best/most interesting Jewish holiday to celebrate (full of ritual, tradition, and storytelling). That is pretty hilarious about the inner desires of your 8 year old heart!

    3. M - I have gone to exactly zero Jewish holidays except through the movies! Really, I am not kidding - it is only a matter of time - I love the city you are in and I would be quiet as a mouse until the 2nd drink! And then - oy vey!

    1. and OMG - they were so cheap (though they do look kind of cheap) - but sometimes in life, you need to go cheap to get glittery cheetah shoes! They look awesome with my skinny jeans!

    2. PS I spent the 80's looking like a Christmas tree, that's why i don't do sparkle anymore and i always think velvet is really creepy, it reminds me of those scary old Victorian dolls.

    3. well I have a Brora velvet dress that I got from the Archive sale that looks dreadful on me! Hmm - maybe I will offer it up free to someone here! I keep forgetting I do NOT have dani's figure! I need to have you try on my stuff and then I will size up and be happy!!!! either that or get it made into a skirt! The top kind of fits like your lilac dress - not the look I was going for...

  8. If there is a time to put on the sparklies, it's during this season so bring it on! I will live vicariously through you since hubby and I escape the round of parties by going away during the Christmas holidays. I did buy the grey cashmere jeweled collared sweater on sale, just in case.

  9. I love your sparkle Wendy!! I am more about Velvet, taffeta, silk... I was saying to Dani, I have hard to enter the Xmas mood as I feel to much pressure this year. It looks to me that the fuss is bigger every year and it starts earlier every year... Well, that said, I plan to wear one of the Xmas day a purple dress with my Brora velvet bolero. I also own a Brora velvet dress/tunic that I just need to find how to wear in a proper way! Your ornament is beautiful... Do you use the same every year or do you have a "themed" Xmas tree?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Nope - no themes allowed here. We do nothing tasteful - all a hodgepodge or family ornaments, gifts we've received, stuff I've seen I can't resist. I am even contemplating tinsel back on the tree!

  10. Sparkle on , Wendy!
As a mother earth type, I like velvet, esp silk velvet. I did get the black tiny sequin tank couple years ago and love it, despite conflicting with my image. Must step out of the bounds on occasion.
I love Christmas, too, esp my tree. Can't have too much sparkle on that!

  11. Sequins suit you and are probably even subdued next to your sparkling personality Wendy. As you've seen from my recent post, I do have a bit of sparkle I wear now and then but what I really like best is some shiny bead work like the beaded Farrow bow top and the beaded reindeer tee. I have a spectacular clutch in a stunning Art Deco beaded pattern that always makes me smile. As Marie says above, 'tis the season, sparkle on!

    1. xoxo - I love beaded as well! My daughter continues to wear her old reindeer beaded tee almost all the time! I always think the more embellishment the better!

  12. I don't havy any sequins or glitter. What does that say about me? Am I like a Hannukah grinch? I am hoping to go shopping in your closet when I visit one of these days. So many festive things!

    1. God - can you imagine - the Hanukkah Grinch! Blue sparkly beads - oh just think of it!!!!! I would have the "8 nights of sparkle" during Hanukkah!

    2. Ok, it's done, * nights of sparkle it is. I have some serious shopping to do by next Thursday!
So if you come down, we can do Thanksgiving with TR (I think I would benefit from a proper American Thanksgiving since I don't think I've had one) and then we can do Hannukah. Sounds fancy pant worthy.

  14. I love glitter,i just dont wear it that much.

You have such a sparkly personality, it fits perfectly to you.

  15. I am anti-glitter after a minor container spill in the house years ago (it doesn't take much glitter to permanently take up residence in the house)!! It is pretty to admire on others :-) I have found I'm not much of a sequin girl either. Like xoxo, I tend toward the beaded things. I have the beaded chambray, the reindeer tee she mentioned, that kind of thing. All rules go out the window when it comes to the Christmas tree, though. It is a crazy mess of shiny, sparkly, glittery everything all over it, just the way I like it!

  16. Looooooove the shoes!!! I have a love-hate relationship with sequins. I keep buying them (last to date: the factory tank in red currant) but then I don't wear them. I think I prefer little touches like embellishments or beads. But you rock them Wendy!
