There is no easy walk to freedom anywhere, and many of us will have to pass through the valley of the shadow of death again and again before we reach the mountaintop of our desires.
Nelson Mandela
We have heroes who walk amongst us, who cast such long shadows that we cannot help but feel their influence on our lives.
Nelson Mandela was one such hero.
I remember the day he was freed, watching with tears streaming down my face, as this old man walked out to greet the world. And that was only the middle of his story, not the end.
He has left us now.
He joins the pantheon of the those mighty few who had a vision for a better world, whose personal destiny was intertwined completely with the destiny of the society in which they find themselves. He gave us faith in a better way; that our better angels would rise up every morning and do the right thing, even if it was hard.
God Bless you Mr. Mandela.
Amen.

ReplyDeleteIt's a sad day, but I'm glad his suffering is over.
And I imagine him 40 years ago, never dreaming he would live to be 95...
