Random Saturday Musings

Hi all,

A quick post today, as I have a TON of work to do today!  I am in the mood to do some re-decorating, so everyone ought to watch out at my house!

Things that have been making me crazy, amusing me or just making me go "hmmm" this week:

1) Sinead's open letter to Miley:

Not much to say here except that in my considered opinion, if you really find someone in distress and you want to help them, take them for a cup of coffee rather than write them a letter you release to the press.  But then, that wouldn't be our Sinead would it - one of the original "shockers' - the irony is not lost on me here.  Hoping for the best for both of these talented women...

2) US Government Shut-Down

Watch this video

I get it - I'm Canadian and I don't understand.  But how can you have a country as advanced and powerful as the US where partisan bickering can result in your federal government shutting down?  This makes no sense to me and would be impossible to have happen here.  It feels a lot of the time that around the world, it's the people who need to be protected from their politicians, regardless of political stripes.  Not trying to offend anyone in the U.S. - I just find this so disconcerting...What is this costing the economy?  I would love an explanation that is neither partisan to the Republicans or Democrats - but perhaps such an explanation is impossible?

3) Bling Bling Cocktail

See yesterday's post for the recipe.  All I can say is:  YUMMY!

4) Gravity

Anyone else going to see this movie this weekend?  I love Sandra Bullock, and well, you know my boyfriend is her co-star, so this was gold-starred for me at the get-go.  We are going tomorrow afternoon and I can't wait!  The reviews have been glowing!

That's it for me this a.m.!  I am off for a wee bit o' groceries and then coming home to clean and nest!  Have an awesome Saturday!!!  And stay safe out there!

  1. 1. Happily, I know nothing about these 2.
    2. This is a national disgrace; no one this beautiful week, could enjoy a national park, including Acadia. Congress is paid to govern and collected paychecks for not governing while thousands of gov workers did not. There really is not a nonpartisan way to explain this. The Reps will not allow a vote to pass a "clean continuing resolution"--a bill allowing the gov to continue at current funding without anything tacked on(defunding Obamacare),despite polls showing most in Congress support this. I won't go into the ACA itself (aka, Obamacare-- many Americans don;t even know it's the SAME THING), but it is time that we don;t have bankruptcies because of medical care. Period. An appendectomy should not cost $30,000. Ever. (sorry for sounding mad-- I am).
    3. George and Sandra have not starred together before, I don't think. Sounds good; not a comedy? No movie for me-- 2 events tonight, one is blacktie optional and MLane is opting out. Must go obsess over what to wear.

  2. Can't wait to see the house redecor!

I barely know who Miley is. I still know her dad better. The US shutdown is incomprehensible - I have decided ignorance is bliss. Have a lovely weekend!

    1. Well I am planning to move some stuff around - clean up the library bookshelves, etc. It is quite a mess here!

  3. I've had to stop watching my evening political news program as I feel so frustrated and confused as to what's going on...I've been numbing my brain on pinterest instead. That movie had good reviews, let us know how it is! Quiet weekend around here, I'm planning to do some serious cooking.
What sort of re-decorating have you got up your sleeve? I sense a list for Barry... ;)

    1. Oh Barry will be pulled in - he always is! I just like things to look spiffy before thanksgiving and I don't feel like writing at all today!

  4. I would like to see that movie! I hope George got you special tickets to the premiere :D

Regarding the U.S. government shutdown, politics in the U.S. are complicated. There is not one side that is good and one side that is bad, there is so much more to it than that. That is all I will say about that :)

So what do you feel like re-decorating this weekend? I feel like doing the same but I can't figure out where to begin. Instead I will probably watch some sports and do the regular chores.

    1. I want to move some furniture!!!!! and clean up my bookshelves and then I am making some homemade enchiladas for supper - I bought a Mexican cookbook yesterday - am dying to try some recipes!

    2. Let me know how your dinner goes. I don't usually try cooking Mexican since it seems a lot of work and never tastes right. Or maybe we just don't try enough since there are so many really good Mexican restaurants around here.

    3. TR - it was fabulous! A salsa verde enchilada and really tasted great! we have only one Mexican restaurant where we live and it is NOT great, so this is a good thing!

    4. Wonderful! So was it an easy recipe? I might need that one ... ;)

  5. Good morning!
    1. Didn't know about this. Don't care about this.
    2. Embarrassing..Republicans need to accept the Affordable Care Act. Congress needs to be on this instead of some golden ticket health care. Mr. Obama needs to submit a budget (on time). No one is innocent here, just pouting babies that need a kick in the ass.
    3. Stuck with wine last night.
    4. I will be seeing gravity but not on opening week end. Give me a couple of weeks.

Time to finish getting the garden ready for winter...lots of hedge trimming. And then Football Time in Tennessee!

    1. Thanks for the good analysis of all! ;-) I thought of you last weekend when I re-watched The Blind Side - why do I think you are like Sandra Bullock in that movie, all southern sass and spunk and smart??? :-) Oh - cause I think you are!

    2. I promise I am not packin'. Much love.

  6. 1. I almost choked on my tea when I read that you believe Miley Cyrus has talent. IMO she has neither talent nor beauty, hence the ridiculous distractions. I laughed so hard at Cher's critique of her performance at the VMAs because I had the same disgusted thought about her tongue. I'm appalled at what is passed off as talent these days.

    2. As a Canadian you can be forgiven for not knowing US history. The US government shutdown has been happening since the 1980's and it is not specific to one party or the other. It is more common when different parties control different branches of government but consider the record under Jimmy Carter, when the Democrats controlled all three: presidency, Senate and House. In just those four years, the government shut down six times, for a total of 66 days. There are people on both sides who benefit and suffer in these situations but the politicians don't want to back down in the fight lest they lose their seat in the next primary.

    3. I'll serve the bling-bling next weekend, I have family coming to visit - yay!

    4. As usual, I save movie-watching for when I am stuck on a plane.

    Have a wonderful weekend!

    1. xoxo - I hear you - though I do think Miley can sing and what a shame she does not use that power for good!
thanks for the info on the shutdown!

  7. Missed you yesterday! I can only wear 18K+ gold and maybe sterling silver in my ears but the silver makes black marks. Love vintage and antique jewelry, that blue IS your color. With your post, I'll probably go into another spell where I drag out my stuff.

    1. I don't know Miley's work so have no idea whether she has anything to offer but shock to distance her Disney past. Love Sinéad's singing.
    2. Ridiculous and frustrating and sad. I know people furloughed by the shutdown, what are they going to do with no pay and no idea how long the situation will last? Hoping it's resolved soon and the chain reaction not too devastating.
    3. A yummy drink with bling? Will have to try if I ever gather the parts.
    4. Will look out for it at some point, also planning to clean and nest.

Unfortunately this weekend, I'm praying we survive the very hot and dry and windy condition without some fool deciding to start a disaster.

    1. TR - good thoughts your way! All I got done today was straightening my library. sigh... And that took 4 hours of cleaning books and shelves and reorganizing..

    2. "All"? That's huge! It would take me at least that long to do that. Plus time to reread lots of stuff.

    3. Oh god - it requires a lot of discipline! Must not stop and read even a page or you are do e for!

  8. WMM, great musings. We're on the same page for all of these, including that Sandra Bullock can do no wrong. ;) She's one of my favorite actresses too. Hope you enjoyed the movie and the rest of your day!

Looking forward to reading about your redecorating plans.
