Style Question Wednesday: J Crew/Others Fall 2013

Happy Wednesday dear chums!

I have been tuning in a bit this week to New York Fashion Week and knew that this was J Crew's big day.

My friend Knityarns, she of the On Trend Orchids blog, had a great post yesterday on Tory Burch's Fall 2013 show.  I agree with her assessment.  As you know, I do not own any Tory Burch, but I may pop in whilst in NYC if I am passing by.

Now first of all, I am NOT going to put all 30 looks up, so no worries.  But you can see them all here.

I will put up the one or two things I could see myself wearing, and one or two abominations in my eyes!

You know I like skirts and there were a couple there for me to like.  However, I am going on record officially to say that this could change dramatically, depending on the material used and the use of little gold threads...

There is also a double-breasted blazer that intrigues me, but I imagine it is crazy expensive.

I was happy to see that Tom Mora had found my great aunt Grace's old tablecloth:

The whole family has been searching for that for years...

And I am predicting that the only person who will be able to wear this coat without looking like an idiot is Ema:

I don't want to be picky, but I pretty much tried to buy this exact same outfit before Christmas...

Sorry - my mistake - in the fall it was iced lilac, I can clearly see that this is warm lilac...

And I swear on all that is holy, I will dream about the model in the picture below and she will be chasing me with ill intent.  Scary!

Watch out children, or the J Crew model will get you!
Finally, I need to comment on one of the male models.  Could J Crew be reading old Archie comics along with old travel and national geographics?

Womens Wear Daily described it as "The collection was one of the brand’s most vibrant, ornate and expensive-looking in a while."

Of course, I had to go take a look at Marissa Webb's Fall 2013 collection, which you can see here.  To be honest, I found it quite severe, but that could be because it was after all of the COLOUR! on J Crew.  I did like this look quite a bit:

So, what would I most like to see in MY closet this fall?  The dress below by Diane von Furstenburg RTW:

Tomorrow is Michael Kors.  No poly Michael!

So - what did you think?

Happy Wednesday and stay safe out there!

  1. Those two skirts will be mine. :D

I loved the fall collection because I like colour a lot.

Is that yet another wrap dress from DVF? It reminds me of my mom's house gown.

    1. It looks moer safari to me, but like a wonderful suede

    2. I was close. Mom's was made of a thin velvet. :)

DVF will soon run out of fabrics to repeat that dress in.

WMM, I forgot to tell you that the floral skirt photo shows as a background in 3 different spots when I look at the website on my iPad. I wonder why.

    3. I don;t know why - I noticed that in my ipad too, went to my computer to delete two and they are not here! Ghost in the machine??

  2. I love that DVF dress. It looks like sumptuous suede, which I'd be terrified to wear. I like the ornate look of the patterns & colors for JC FA13. I'm not sure any of it's for me, but I like the richness.

    1. Hi Gigi - I find them all over rich - had same feeling from Tory Burch

  4. There is a dark blue/light blue printed shift dress that looks interesting. That is all. I am just relieved to know that flyaway hair is in this year, I am all set!

    1. Cate - I thought the same thing - messy buns, too. I don't know how to do a non-messy bun!

    2. Well, that's something at least. Every few years my hair is "in".

  5. I think you overestimate me, I don't think I can pull that coat off.
I didn't like it overall, too ornate for my taste. The only look that I like is the scary one but I will probably be over with it in the Fall as it is a big spring trend.
I stopped at Tory yesterday and I had the same reaction, too ornate (brocade galore, embellishments everywhere), especially for spring (and very little color).

    1. Ema - if you can't wear, ain't no one can wear it! I will be curious to see that one in the sale section...

  6. BUY, WEAR, REPEAT WMM dying at tablecloth scour and warm lilac. Not wowed, but Fashion Week is often that way for me since overstyled and far ahead of actual season. Like Ema,only thing that appealed to me at JC is your nemesis, Scary Not Spicy. My fave at Tory show was also her get up with underlayer and tights, but that's probably because I tried a jumper-dress this winter for first time since HS uniform, and it has been very versatile. Now I actually have own plan, likely a little less distracted by the "random" pretty thing. But runway stuff is really feeling "more of same" to me since last fall.

    1. Agree completely! And I did like scary runway model's outfit, but so scared of her that I could only look once. I closed my eyes when I copied and pasted it! :-)

  7. That first picture makes me laugh because they've somehow tried to made pencil skirts look hip. It doesn't really work for me.

Cathy Horyn in the NYT singled out that particular DVF dress as being desirable. I like it a lot too.

In general, I find it hard to grasp what is going on in the fashion shows. J. Crew does not quite fit in with the crowd, but you can tell they are working on it.

Hilarious comment about your great aunt's tablecloth!

    1. Hi Abby, I started seriously exercising and dieting this week, so I could have been drawn to teh DVF dress because it remined me of a truffle. I will have to watch out for tendency to choose spring items that look like macarons...

  8. JCrew looks like it has skipped well down the Poly Path, I guess I like some of the plum shades but just say no to ball caps, leopard or not. Giant distracting houndstooth scarf or not!
It's fun to look at but really I've got a feeling I wouldn't like the final product which makes it less interesting to me now.
Same with TB, I like some of her looks but I know quality is hit or miss. I do have one great summer dress from TB but I have seen some hot mess skirts/jackets too.
I was putting together some outfits using old stuff yesterday and enjoying it quite a bit, how goes your closet organizing this week?

    1. Oh it is slow. I did have a nice outfit yesterday, but was having one of those days where I did not want my picture taken! You may not see me in a photo for another 10 pounds! :-)

Things that don't fit right now are tucked out of sight, but I am finding I am reaching for same 8 or 9 things. I think I am finding the core me!

Off to go do Classical Stretch Dani - I watched it through last night and am off to put on sweats and give it a shot! My thighs need a day off from bicycle!

    2. Off to do my stretch too Wendy, I hope you like it as well as I do!

    1. My one requisite was my boyfriend would have a bigger ass than me. Do not understand the male skinny pant thing going on.

    2. BB - I am with you completely! My son, who is almost 18 will only wear skinny pants. At 6'4", with skinny legs inherited from mother, it is quite a thing to see! And no ass whatsoever!!!

  10. Is it my imagination, or do these Fashion Weeks keep coming earlier and earlier? Just can't look at stuff so far ahead, and I can quite "see" anything - it all looks over the top to me. Can't stand this ridiculous way of carrying handbags either, like large clutches, the Victoria Beckham way. Strangely these shows make me want to run rather than lust after the clothing.

    1. Kathy - I know just how you feel! They are getting very over the top and the models so severe!

  11. WMM- I am still smiling about your tablecloth comment. Too funny. Thank you for the wonderful mention! I am not at all surprised that you zeroed in on my 2 favorite picks. The pairing in the first picture with the skirt is so eye catching. I love the brown tones with the floral skirt- although I could not pull that off IRL. Funny, I never noticed the ball cap until I read all of the reviews. I was just enjoying the overall effect. The jacket is sublime. Clearly it is a runway/ collection piece, but that is what fashion week is for, and I enjoy it tremendously. Your DVF pick is gorgeous! That amber color would be so pretty with your coloring. I was going to do a post on my favorite runway pick, but I couldn't limit myself and the post would be exhausting. Enjoy your workout!

  12. That floral skirt is so beautiful, but I have to say it reminds me of those Limited vests that all the girls in my high school wore in 1990. I have no idea if I could wear it and not think of them. LOL. :)

  13. I hope auntie would not be displeased with this reincarnation of her tablecloth. Wonder WHAT the thought process is for stuff like this.

"What shall we do for fall to make our customers look stylish and classy? We could start using better fabrics again, better linings."

"No, Wendy's aunt's tablecloth IS available and we shall pt it on some lapels and keep the poly linings"

    " Oh, brilliant".

    1. Lane - I think it was JUST like that! That is how things sometimes work in my work world, why not J Crew, too? But the fashionistas love it, so I guess I am just not fashionable enough!

  14. WHAT IS WITH THAT BEDAZZLED TRUCKER HAT?

I think the coat it's shown with would actually be lovely over a simple shift dress with sleek hair and minimal makeup, as the one "pop" in the outfit (on a woman who is 7 inches taller than me and the same weight). Here it looks like something out of a Grey Gardens remake.

How is it that they manage to take some pretty, skinny women and make them look like hot messes? (I think this about most of the fashion week shows, frankly.) Designers: if you need someone to look a mess on your runway, I will do it at half their price. But no way will I be caught dead in a bedazzled trucker hat. Dealbreaker, ladies.

  15. I don't like any of it. I Agree about the purple/lavender look. It's identical to fall 2012. I really wanted to see some pretty and rich colors - rich purple, emerald, blue and brown (even if I don't wear brown).

  16. I see several things I like as always but with spring on the way I can't think about it now. I am happy to see our ankles will remain frozen with the cafe capri continuing to be on the menu. I like them because I don't have to hem. Regular length pants at Jcrew ( when you can find a pair) are way too long and I am at the upper end of petite length and never am happy with the rise. The scary model with the creepy stare reminds me a bit of Sharon Stone ( a brunette version) in Basic Instinct.

  17. Too early for me to think of Fall. I can see you wearing the floral skirt but beware I purchased a metallic on e and the tiny metallic threads were broken in a couple wears.
I saw the Judith and Charles spring collection this past weekend and it was outstanding . The dresses skim the body and workmanship was excellent. Check it out.

    1. HI Marsha - I think they have a store in NYC - I will definitely pop in there while there! I have always been pleased with my Judith and Charles pieces! I suspect in the end it will be between J&C and Nougat London for Spring Dress. I am leaning very hard now towards Tori Burch mid-rise wedge in a lovely cognac colour - this colour and style are definitely gaps in spring/summer wardrobe!

I am with you - I still can't get a handle on Spring!

  18. Too funny about the tablecloth - I was thinking along the same lines too, like curtain and sofa upholstery... I honestly didn't like anything in the JC Fall collection - thematically, it seemed really disjointed and each of the items seemed like a retread of a style from previous seasons: capris! more brocade! more rhinestone embellishment! Oh well, I am sure they will come out with some other things by the time August rolls around that will be a bit more palatable.

  19. The skirts are pretty but I have promised myself no more shiny brocade prints until I wear the skirt I already own (and like more that these). I agree the bold piled on patterns are extremely hard to pull off and that coat is unwearable for us regular mortals. I posted my own impressions today, as you know. I did not occur to me when I was writing it but KnitYarns had a great observation in her comment that it is a very adult collection. I like that they are going in that direction. Look what happened at Hello Kitty Spade.

  20. There are a few of the J.Crew pieces I might possibly end up being interested in, but it's really difficult to even want to think about them right now with spring on the way. I will say that I do like the colors much better than the ones they had this past fall.

That DVF dress is gorgeous! I would also love to see one in my closet this coming fall, too! :)

  21. Great post, WMM! I totally agree about JC's colors. I just received my new Tippi in Tropical Green and it is almost exactly Retro Jade. Back it goes. I wasn't excited by much in the Spring collection and even less in this Fall collection. Good news for my wallet :).
