Get Ready for the Pi Day of the Century

Or should I say an "extra special" Pi Day?

As many of you know, March 14th is celebrated yearly as Pi Day, as in 3.14.

According to Piday.org:

"Pi Day is celebrated on March 14th (3/14) around the world. Pi (Greek letter “π”) is the symbol used in mathematics to represent a constant — the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter — which is approximately 3.14159.

Pi has been calculated to over one trillion digits beyond its decimal point. As an irrational and transcendental number, it will continue infinitely without repetition or pattern. While only a handful of digits are needed for typical calculations, Pi’s infinite nature makes it a fun challenge to memorize, and to computationally calculate more and more digits."

BTW - there's a great scene in the play The Audience where the actor playing Prime Minister Harold Wilson rolls the first dozens of numbers after .14 off his tongue.  Quite a feat!

Anyway, tomorrow's Pi Day is especially interesting because of it's once in a century significance:

"If you’re a math enthusiast, maybe you’ll be celebrating the once-a-century day when the calendar and the clock align to represent the first 10 digits of pi (3.141592653)."

Ah so much to do when that old clock hits 9:26:53 tomorrow morning!!!!

It is already making me feel like I am back in Calculus writing about this, but I'm not going to lie: I hated calculus, but I love Pi Day!  Who doesn't love a formula that just won't quit?

Me?  I think I'm going to buy some apples and make a pi.  If my crust is holding together really well, I might even try this:

Yes, I am just that much of a geek... And I like to make pies...

  1. I did not know about this special day! We have a very geeky(very rich) friend who collects old sliderules from around the world and can rattle off several hundred digits of pi, not that anyone would know if he was making it up, least of all me! I feel a key lime pie coming on... Thanks for the tip!

  2. Fun! And the bars might be a wee bit less crowded than St Paddys Day so it's a nice excuse to celebrate!

    1. Good point. St. Paddy's Day is a bit of a hot mess of drunken men drinking green beer (but don't tell GSL I said that!)

    2. Wendy, Saint Paddy's day is amateur hour and had to navigate through the drunken throngs yesterday who started hitting the sauce at 8am.
GSL always sits out Saint Paddy's Day and NYE and lets those rookies have their fun!

  7. PI & BLUE SKY Wendy if you do decide to get all symbolic with your tart, please take a piccie and post. I think I would actually prefer your tomato, pesto version from previous post, I am not much of one for double crust pies. Although of course there are exceptions to every rule. Hope the snow stays away from your Sunday...

  8. Math geek here, will be wearing an ultimate pi day tshirt today. Another trivia for fun: At 12;34 on May 6, 1978, a special lining up of dates and hours was recorded with sequence of 12345678. This will not happen again until the year 2078. Enjoy your irrational day!
