Latest Obsession - Orphan Black

I know I am always late to the party, and this is a Canadian party, which makes it that much worse.

Orphan Black Season 2 Cast

As is always the case, I heard about Orphan Black from multiple sources within about four days of one another.

"Have you seen Orphan Black?  It's Amazing!"

"I'm addicted to Orphan Black!"

and then there she was - Tatiana Maslany - the lead of the series, nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award, being interviewed by Maria Menounos on the red carpet, who raved about her performance on the show.

Enough!  I had to see this myself.

Daughter and I are currently binge-watching seasons 1 and 2 on DVD.  Season 3 is currently airing on Space here in Canada, and BBC America in the US.

It's a Canadian TV Series, and it is riveting, especially Maslany herself.

The premise (according to Wikipedia) and giving away no spoilers is as follows:

The series begins with Sarah Manning, a con artist by trade, witnessing the suicide of a woman, Beth Childs, who appears to be her doppelgänger. Sarah takes on Beth's identity and occupation as a police detective after Beth's death. During the first season, Sarah discovers that she is a clone, that she has many 'sister' clones spread throughout North America and Europe, and that someone is plotting to kill them and her.

We are at episode 5 and she has already played 5 or 6 different characters.  And dammit if she doesn't make each one seem completely different that you sometimes forget it's the same actress!

I'm not going to lie, beside our heroine Sarah, my favourite character is her gay foster brother, Felix, who cracks me up every time.

I adore this show with its byzantine plots, its crazy-good acting and its gritty feel.  I cannot recommend it enough!

And as an aside, in real life Tatiana dates Tom Cullen, who plays Lord Gillingham in Downton Abbey.  There couldn't be two more different shows.  But they make a cute couple...

Trust me when I say this is good.  And no, this is not TV for your kids...

Have a great Tuesday!  xoxo wendy

  1. I'm putting it on my list! Thanks for the recommendation. I'm so behind with watching series tv, right now we're watching Friday Night Lights, I love it, but it's been out forever. I'm watching Gossip Girl with Little Rascal, we're having so much fun with it. NYC! The clothes!

    2. Dani my daughter and I were obsessed with Gossip Girl. I kind of thought it was not exactly appropriate for an 11 yo but it was such a indulgence.

  2. You are a bit behind. Love the series. Something happened with our receiver so we can only hear DVDs and Netflix. Have started watching Blacklist with James Spader...so far, so good.

  3. Hi Wendy, this show has been on my radar since it started (I read Laineygossip religiously!) but I haven't watched it yet - somehow it doesn't appeal to me, but I have heard the rave reviews. There's so much else to watch! Right now we are watching, of course, Downton, but also Grantchester and Inside Claridges (on PBS), plus some other shows. My PVR is full!

    1. It's very good - I wasn't sure what I'd think, but I quite like it. Our pbs channel doesn't carry inside Claridges - hope it does soon. And I love Grantchester!

    2. Wendy, you will LOVE Inside Claridges!. No wonder Tabitha is so enamoured with that hotel! I hope you get to see it sometime.

    3. Wendy and Patricia, the whole Inside Claridges series is on YouTube. Tabitha was kind enough to share it with me (hotel habit) months ago. Will post the link here.

    5. Thanks GF - I hope that Wendy watches it. I love the general manager, all the staff really. We were just saying the other night that we should try and make a reservation for afternoon tea next time we are in London. (We certainly won't be staying there any time soon!)

    6. Patricia, they take reservations for it up to 90 days in advance and depending on time of year you travel may well need that lead time. I think it is well worth it. And if you "win the lotto" can always sign up for one of their excellent "Master Classes," which generally include lunch in the kitchen or afternoon tea etc. (Be warned, those cost as much as a very nice hotel room many places.)

  5. I loved, loved, loved the first season but somehow I got a bit bored by the end of the second one. I also binged on Orange is the New Black and now I am waiting for the third season of House of Cards. Yes, Netflix and Amazon Prime had me watching way more TV than I ever did, I am a binge kind of watcher.

  7. Hello Wendy,

We are not the last to arrive.........we never arrive at all!

We have no television and have not owned one for over thirty years. So, however behind you are......we are definitely trailing by decades. We realise that this makes us odd, orphans of the TV screen, even........are we, we wonder, the only people in the world not to have seen a single episode of Downton Abbey?

  8. Wendy, I do think Tatiana and Tom are a smashing dark haired duo. Space was nattering about it when it first came out and the DH is a habitué, so I did catch this one when it first came out. Holding my breath for the return of HoC, Spacey machinations and Robin Wright's outfits, nuances.

Inside Claridges link being posted above, at Patricia's original comment.
