Valentine's Style Wednesday - Red Boots

Red sails in the sunset, way out on the sea}
Oh, carry my loved one home safely to me
{She sailed at the dawning, all day I've been blue}
Red sails in the sunset, I'm trusting in you

It will surprise none of you that the dial on my satellite radio is set to 40s on 4.  I could listen to that channel all day and all night long.  The only time it is off is Friday or Saturday night when it is switched to 70s on 7 or 80s on 8 or to my iPod.

Whenever I hear the dulcet tones of Bing Crosby singing the song above, I can't help but think of the great red love of my life: my old red patent Aquatalia Volt boots:

above is what they looked like on the day I bought them.

They are a little more raggedy 7 years later..

Ready for a cleaning...

These are lucky boots.  I used to wear them to big meetings or to the legislature when I had to defend budgetary accounts.  When I've worn them in NYC, people have stopped me on the street to tell me how much they love them.

They have the ability to elevate an otherwise sedate outfit to one that is playful.

For example:

 Yesterday I put on my cashmere t, my Pink Tartan cardigan, a small string of pearls and my black cable knit skirt.  Sedate.  Could border on Mumsy.

Add red boots and suddenly it has a little cheekiness to it.

I plan to wear these a lot this week given that it is Valentine's Day.  But mostly, I plan to wear them a lot because I could use some cute kick-ass.

How about you - anything in your closet that when you put it on elevates the outfit to a different level?  Would love to hear about it!

Now I just need a pair of high white leather boots like those toots wore at the opening ceremonies in Sochi....

Have a great Wednesday and stay safe out there!

  4. Love to see your inner Dorothy come out in the winter. Those boots are hopping. My Canada Goose parka is helping me survive this brutal season. Indoors, my scarves and stoles keep me warm and cheer me up. I'm sneaking into your suitcase bound for Florida.

    1. I have been eying a Canada goose parka all winter. May spring in March when they are bargain bargain basement and everyone else has spring fever! I have a lands end goose down coat that is not all that pretty, but I am never cold. I hate the cold and cannot wait to go! 14 days!

  6. Fabulous boots, Wendy! I don't think I have any item with some punch like that. Have a great day!

  7. Did you know I owned those exact same boots but in black? I wore them for years non-stop until they fell off of my feet. They were awesome and so comfortable too. Your red ones are very you!

  9. Hi Wendy, those boots are indeed kick-ass, I bet people knew you meant business when they saw them! I don't have anything like that - but used to have a pair of purple ankle boots many moons ago, those were great.

  10. Love the boots Wendy. OMG I am so sick of boots. I don't mind all of the snow, but I just want the ice and salt gone so I can wear my glitter Darby loafers.

    1. Well Honestly, I have mostly worn my Uggs - the ones that look like LL Bean boots. They are the only thing that keeps me warm enough in this -20 weather!!!! I hear you - I am looking at my shoes and feeling sad..

  11. Hi Wendy, love those boots, they really take outfits to the next level! I could use some outfit elevation. I bought a pair of UGG boots (probably the same ones you have) in December to help me survive this winter - they are not very nice looking but at least they keep my feet warm. I cannot wait to stop wearing them!

  13. Those boots really do punch up that outfit. My dressing strategy is never to wear anything that people notice right away although I have several tartan ties (clan tartans; never Burberry, RL, or the new Brooks Bros tartans) that get raves later in the evening.

  14. More snow coming Wendy. The red will look great next to all that white just in time for Valentines day!

  15. As others have written, the red boots suit you. My boots are in boring neutral colors. My shoe collection is little more interesting but there are no showstoppers.

    The item that has received the most compliments this winter is my black sheepskin coat. The "furry" part of the sheepskin is on the outside. It is an oversized version of the basic trenchcoat shape that has been tailored to fit my small frame. It is incredibly warm and stands out in a sea of black puffer coats. I also love that it is a high end coat purchased for a fraction of it's original price during the London summer sales.

  16. I love those boots, definitely something I would wear, red is my favourite colour. I have some black patent boots which do the same thing, dowdy well worn work clothes suddenly look quite sassy!

  17. Nothing wrong with red patent mumsey! We are old enough to rock whatever we want. It's all in the attitude:))

  18. Love the ruby red boots! I think red shoes go with everything. My children have often had red shoes for this reason (as I generally only buy them one pair of shoes per season, they have to do for everything).
    I think the only thing that elevates the everyday into special for me are accessories. Well chosen ones will always make you look good. A big cuff or a statement necklace will go a long way. xx

  19. Those are great boots! I have a pair of black short boots that bring an edgy look to the most conservative ensembles. Love them.

    1. I think shorter boots can be so fun. These ones need a good spit and polish!
