Thank God for Fine French Restaurants, Empire TV Series, but most of all, Thank God for Cookie!

Son is gone now till Thanksgiving and it sucked much more than even I thought it would. Such is life I guess...

However, Montreal was a delight and Saturday night we stumbled upon the most amazing French restaurant very close to son's residence: Chez la mere Michel on Rue Guy.

Really, it was like stepping into a piece of Provence. Authentic cuisine, attentive and experienced wait staff with tons of stories. (our server, Marc, has worked there for 30 years and is originally from France).

I ordered duck (as I am wont to do) and the boys ordered guinea fowl. All was wonderful and happily washed down with a lovely bottle of wine!

An enjoyable meal and I highly recommend this restaurant!  It made me excited to go to Paris!

When I arrived home, I was seriously homesick for my boy. As luck would have it, my daughter had signed us up for Shomi and I have been catching up on season 1 of Empire.

I'm obsessed I tell you, OBSESSED!

and mostly I am obsessed with Cookie:

No one glares like Cookie - no one....

I will have binge-watched it all by the time the new season begins in a few weeks.

From one mother to another: thank you Cookie. You did me a solid!

How have you all been?

  1. Wendy, I remember the moment of dropping off my first daughter to college very clearly. It was a struggle to drive home since with a girl we of course needed two SUVs, packed to the gills, and I needed to drive the second car. Once home I announced to my husband that I would be taking to the bed and that I would remain there for one day to cry my heart out. And that is exactly what I did. By the second day I forced myself to resume life. With the first it is that not only do you miss that child but also you are forced to accept that your family is beginning to separate in the way it needs to. If it is of any consolation, I believe the first was the hardest for me. It could have been the last but she was so instantly ecstatic at her university that it made it easier. The good news is that now it is so much easier to remain active in each other's lives with emails, texts, cell phones, etc. Gone are my old days with a few pay phones at the end of the halls which no one ever answered! Live goes on and becomes normal again and with a little luck you can sneak back to Montreal, such a lovely city, for a few visits. Chin up and Empire on my friend!

    1. I love that - taking to your bed! It is such a Victorian idea!!! Thanks for the sound advice!

    2. The need for two SUV's, 'Ah, yes, I remember it well'. as Maurice Chevalier once sang! I took our elder daughter back to university after the summer break in my small Citroen Dyane car crammed to capacity with rugs, throws and the like, needing the roof rolled back so that I didn't squash her plants, I saw a boy entering the quad with just one suitcase. When I queried this and got the reply, 'Yes, but he's just sad.' It still makes me laugh!

  2. That restaurant is in his neighborhood? Gee, maybe we'll go visit him! Glad you are feeling better; good to know they are fine without us.

Never heard of Shona nor Empire so research is in order. I can't think of almost anything I've watched recently except reruns of B Cumberbatch in Sherlock Holmes series.

    1. Lane - it is my new not-guilty pleasure!!! Mr. Lane will truly despise it, so I recommend looking into it sans him.... I love that Sherlock Holmes series. Have you discovered Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrel? Another amazing brit TV series!

  4. Thinking of you Wendy. Just read you previous post on the son. How sweet and what a lucky boy to be your son. I am sure he is ready, but what about us? I dread this next year. At least your son is 20 and it's a little older and you had him there a little longer. Hang in there and good idea binge watching! This looks great. I've got to check it out. xo Kim

  7. Look at the bright side, it's an excuse to visit Montreal often. If you like duck, recommend Chez Dumonet in Paris. I have just finished watching Case Histories 1 and 2. Just discovered Jason Isaacs, where have I been? Love those BBC detective series.

  8. MY thoughts are with you, and best of luck to your son! I have a cousin in Montreal and love your recommendation. So much ambiance comes through, even in the pictures. Good luck with your rewriting- I am in a similar boat, but at least you are updating your blog : ) I am the worst.
